What are the perceived problems with 3.5 psionics?
« on: July 08, 2020, 12:43:19 PM »
I'm hoping for people to chime in with the most common issues and problems with 3.5 psionics.

I'd like to gather a list of perceived pain points.

I'd also like to reference this analysis (on the positive side): https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/67010/are-psionics-overpowered-or-especially-exploitable

The very existence of Complete Psionic. It breaks many of the fundamental rules of the system, is in general either broken or a stealth nerf depending on which part of the book you're looking at, and overwhelming leads Psionics away from the well designed system it was into another splatbook pile of garbage.

1: People don't see the rule that you can only use up to your ML in power points at once and think Psionics can nova too easily.

3: People don't see the rule that you can only use up to your ML in power points at once and think Psionics can nova too easily.
4: Psionics have a really, really shitty design history. This includes the 3.0 version that's the biggest change fom 3.0 to 3.5. Naturally this legacy has soured opinons.

On the opposite end, things that are genuine problems
1: Plenty of things that were bad in the sense that they suck. Soul Knife was basicly useless, and the book gave the exotic race tax to its new races even though they didn't deserve it.
2: Support was extremely scattered, putting Psionics in that pale twilight where it was neither a self contained system, nor a well supported one. Since Complete Psionics doesn't exist, just a few random previews on WotC's website, you've got the (largely excellent) web articles, Secrets of Sarlona (which is not only setting speciffic, but covers a part of that setting few campaigns touch), and some random powers and feats in random books (most of which was just psionic versions of magic stuff) with no real rhyme or reason.

The "nova too easily" has more to do with the matter of spamming high-level Powers, as a 17th level Psion with 19 Intelligence can use 16 9th level Powers in a day. It's the nova of Spell Points in general, where you're spamming out far more of the high-level effects than the game vaguely intends. We're talking a 9th-level Save Or Die every round of every fight the moment you have 9th level Powers.

Needing to pay more PP for more damage and the generally low number of powers known even though many are intentionally versatile and the general lack of official support made them kinda unappealing compared to their core counterparts of Sor and Wiz and Cleric.
