Great Rift Skyguard and attacking from high ground
« on: September 24, 2016, 09:42:43 PM »
So Great Rift Skyguard.

It has a feature called Axes From the Sky. It calls out the "attacking from high ground" rule to grant the airborne dwarf a +1 to hit because of high ground despite not touching ground and effectively flying/falling/being airborne.

So flying and/or otherwise airborne creatures should intact get a high ground bonus to attack when above their opponent regardless of how or why they are above them, yes?

I'd rule it that way, yes.  I figure it's done because it's easier to swing down with gravity than up against it (and also the benefit of fighting on a vertical plane to creatures accustomed to horizontal movement).

Plotting something with dropdwarves are we?

Mostly it was in regards to how I seem to see most people saying you have to physically be on the ground to get the high ground bonus :/

That's strange.  I don't see anything special about being groundbound.  I wonder what their reasoning is.  I suspect it's a RAW argument, something like "it's higher ground, emphasis on ground."

Exactly!  if it said higher air then that would be different.  :P

Nah, then we'd just be arguing about it working underwater, or in the Astral plane, or in Spelljammer, or...

You can also get the "higher ground" bonus from wearing stilts or riding animals. Very rarely do DMs remember to include hills or stairs to fight on.
