The peony star

A cold, dark forest. Uneven ground; treacherous.
Look up: empty, lightless sky. Except one.
An aeon distant, a small point of light. A single red star.
Watch petals of fire bloom and wilt. Life and death, light and dark, a shining answer to all of it.
Something hurts. Ignore it, follow the star.
Stumble. Ignore it. Faster. Something hurts. Faster.

In Sredin, there is a cautionary tale of a youth who climbs a cliff face to bring his lover a red flower. He plucks the flower, but in his eagerness slips on the way down and falls to his death together with her.

Livest

A sprawling capital city nestled between fertile hills and a river so mighty its forks and detours form a vast maze of islands. In ancient times, it was a border fort of a middling duchy, practically unassailable from the east, but its security and location made it a vibrant center of trade when the scattered human lands began uniting and expanding. Those days are long past. Now, the city's darkly beautiful spires reign over the landscape like an aging king, shadows pooling at his feet.

Races and classes

Dwarves
A strong and industrious race of the great western mountains and foothills. They value skill, mindfulness, and tradition, and divide their society into castes ruled by artisans and craftsmen. Many eschew humanity's sky-gods and treat instead with the deep things beneath their mountain homes.

Elves
A long-lived, secretive people hailing from the cold forests and plains of the far northeast. While the dawn elves remain distant in their ancient homes, the dusk elves have settled among human lands. Their light-shy and manipulative cousins are called night elves by humans, but other elves term them simply drow, refusing to acknowledge them as elves.

Halflings
Good-natured people said to have been created when a city of humans was cloven in half to the last and an angel took pity on the remains - hence the name. Considered a kind of human, they are well-aceepted but prefer to settle separately, for human cities are not scaled to them. All races regard them fondly, but often with an air of patronage.

Humans
Transient but resourceful, humankind expands with singular ambition. They are the masters of the two empires that cover the continent's center, and a dozen other kingdoms. It is their gods that light the earth, they say, though the church is younger than it likes to admit.

###

Barbarian
A warrior who gives in to base nature in battle, discarding the pretense of civility that helps Men to sleep at night. While associated with primitive cultures, the "war-madness" has been observed even among soldiers. Especially in the historically war-torn central and southern mountains, the line between lawbringing conqueror and bloodthirsty warlord has always been thin.

Bard
Heirs of a diverse tradition who keep old wisdom alive in coded parables and music, working magic through resonance. A handful of highly respected colleges enjoy a degree of immunity even nobles are envious of. Not all can graduate to become a herald or influential courtier, but even common folk appreciate entertainment and inspiration.

Cleric
Wise and holy men and women favored by humakind's gods of Heaven - Skymother Celeste, Queen Sunna and King Mano, Sight-Fire Ain, Great and Gracious Deneb, and a myriad others. The dwarves have their own gods in Moradin and Mya, while the elves prefer to treat with worldly forces, but many members of both races have become integrated.

Druid
Shaman of a secret society venerating the ancient gods of the land - Wolf, Bear, Lake and Mountain, Snake, and more besides. Though humanity now looks to the heavens for salvation, the druids remember that this was not always so. Rumors that such circles guide kingdoms from the shadows are mostly baseless.

Fighter
Skilled and powerful warrior, above the simple rank and file. Those who choose to make war their profession attend schools dedicated to slaying, or apprentice themselves to a man-at-arms or mercenary company. There is always demand for those willing to kill for coin or cause, and true skill may bring glory as well.

Monk
Heretic mystics who believe in the divinity of the mortal body and soul. Rather than seek a place among the stars in death, they aim to embody their light on earth in life. Though the church is in truth fractured and houses many strange sects, this is among the strangest and least tolerated.

Paladin
Knights of several pious orders named for the attendants of a legendary king of antiquity. The largest and most powerful of these orders - the Knights of the Heron, Crane, and Shrike - are practically polities of their own. Though orders have come and gone, it is traditional for them to be named after birds, which are said to speak the language of Heaven and embody goodness and truth.

Ranger
Hunter and frontiersman with knowledge of wild spirits and occult trade secrets. Such individuals often patrol sparsely settled places to defend whatever they call home without sanction. In the south, they have sometimes led or aided bands of brigands that styled themselves freedom fighters against nobility or invading forces.

Rogue
Expert in stealth, devices, clandestine operations, theft, or murder - in short, a criminal. In certain areas, those who make it their profession to evade the law have begun to organize into secret cults allied with slinking, dark spirits of the night and claim to better their communities from the shadows. In this world, even the dregs of society need something to believe in.

Sorcerer
Scions of ancient bloodlines whose founders practiced dark alchemy and drank the blood of dragons for power. Nowadays, the families are large and the blood is thin, and the gift of true blood sorcery is rare. Lesser mutations are often taken for signs of inbreeding or curses by the ignorant, but old names still command respect among those who recognize them.

Warlock
One who has broken with the gods and treated with stranger entities. Beings such as cast-out stars, voices in the cracks, or spirit kings cannot, will not, or dare not bless mortals and shape destiny as the gods of heaven and earth do, but they have power and knowledge to spare, and are eager if harsh teachers to those with the will or desperation to use their gifts. The price may not even feel like a price, at first.

Wizard
A scholar of reality, who studies at the feet of the world itself and its spirits. Though wisemen have long been bizarre loners and often opposed the church, the human empires can leverage sufficient resources to formally instruct those wealthy and patient enough - and loyal enough.

Play

Experience. In addition to the usual XP for overcoming encounters, experience points will be awarded under the following conditions:
-The characters gain an ally, forge contacts, or make inroads with a NPC group or organization.
-The characters uncover a significant secret, make an important discovery, or resolve a mystery.

Alignment. Instead of the usual nine alignments, there are only three: lawful, neutral, and chaotic. These represent a cosmic alignment with order or chaos in the mythological sense, and need not be a statement on a character's personality except in some broad strokes. For instance, the usually chaotic good elves are neutral in this system without any change to their general disposition, while both lawful evil devils and chaotic evil demons are just chaotic.
Law represents order, civilization, and light; chaos anarchy, wilderness, and darkness. The human gods of Heaven, the dwarven gods, and their followers are lawful. The old gods of the earth, elves, fairies and wild spirits are neutral. Fallen stars, creatures of darkness, primordial beasts, and stranger things are chaotic.
Paladins and clerics of the human and dwarven gods must be lawful.
Druids cannot be lawful, and are usually neutral but may be chaotic.
Warlocks cannot be lawful; depending on their patron they may find themselves drawn towards chaos whether they want it or not.
Monks are usually lawful.

Personal characteristics and inspiration. A character's Ideal is renamed to a Passion. This is conceptually similar but emphasizes its emotional nature; your passion is what makes your heart dance, weep, or freeze, and might turn you to obsession. Instead of an idea, it could also reflect your feelings toward a person or a personal goal. The key is that it moves you, for good or for ill.
Characters gain inspiration when they act out their personal characteristics, and when they interact with a friend or enemy in an emotionally intimate (not necessarily positive) fashion.
You are strongly encouraged to let me know when you feel you should have earned inspiration. If you think the case for it is flimsy, ask anyway. The worst I can say is no.
You may not give your inspiration to another player who does not have it. It's yours, use it or lose it. Instead, you can spend your inspiration when another player makes a roll and describe how you're coming to their help in order to give them advantage as if they'd spent inspiration, essentially letting you take a free Help action.

Rest and recovery. Rather than eight hours, a long rest requires a full day of resting. This time need not be spent twiddling thumbs; social interaction, light physical activity like walking, and other non-strenuous activity are allowed, but anything that would be advised against while recovering from illness will interrupt a long rest. Short rests are unchanged.

Character creation and options

We shall start at level 1.

Use the standard array of stats, or point buy if your fancy is struck by a more exotic combination of ability scores.

Feats are allowed, should you want to take them. If you want to multiclass, talk through what you want to do with me.

Most things in the Player's Handbook are available by default. You may wish to shop around in sources other than the PHB, such as Unearthed Arcana or one of the few supplements, in which case tell me what you're looking for and I may have a suggestion or tell me what you found and I'll tell you if I want it in my game.

In addition to the backgrounds presented in the Player's Handbook, the Haunted One background from Curse of Strahd is available by default (negotiate background proficiencies with me). Similarly, you may roll on or choose from the gothic trinket table presented in that book instead of the table in the PHB if you want to start with a trinket.

Gnomes, tieflings, dragonborn, and wild magic sorcerers, in rough descending order of my readiness to change my mind, are soft-banned, meaning if you really really want to play one we'll talk something out.

Don't write down your personal characteristics right away. I will invite you to do so after the first several sessions when we've had some time to get into character. Similarly, characteristics needn't be static. If you feel one should change, feel free to do so and let me know. I will also invite you to review your characteristics from time to time.

Handbook Discussion / Re: Optimization by the Numbers: Discussion
« on: August 14, 2016, 09:49:52 AM »
If you plan on compiling additional sources and are up for some extra work, I'd recommend also dividing monsters into somewhat heuristic categories like caster monsters, critters with middling AC and lots of hp and vice versa, and things like that. When you have monsters that are really hard to hit but don't take many hits to go down and average them with easy to hit monsters that take a lot of damage, the averages are liable to not reflect the actual cases very usefully.
Same with monsters that don't necessarily have high AC or high hp but benefit from a miss chance - it's misleading to count a displacer beast as having AC 16 and 51 hp, for example. Same with certain gimmick monsters whose toughness is greatly dependent on whether you use a certain mode of attack or not, like regenerators or incorporeal creatures. Those either need some kind of approximate weighting to account for those factors or should probably be ignored as outliers.

The main table was compiled from all monsters in the SRD, which means it would contain the first Monster Manual, the Expanded Psionics Handbook, and the Epic Level Handbook. The linked second chart incorporated more sources, but it's been a dead link for years - since well before I ported this.

As far as I can tell, the feature is still there. Go to your profile and to the Buddies/Ignore list section under Modify Profile.
Remember to ignore responsibly and not be a jerk about it.  ;)

Emails are a server-side thing, so basically all we can do is try to get someone to fix it. We've poked but haven't heard back yet. As shitty as the situation is, for now it's out of our hands, even Prime's.

I deleted it because the massive free space extension on my dropbox I had at the time ran out a year or two ago and I needed to purge stuff. Best I have is a zip of some of it I compiled when the pictures reached a nice number, as now that folder is integrated with my local folder of unrelated pictures.

We're alive, but our attention can fluctuate sometimes since these boards are fairly low-maintenance when someone isn't actively starting fires. That said... wow, that's been there a long time. I don't really have an excuse in this case. Your specific thing is something only Prime can do anything about either way, but we've seen it now and will get back to you.

I think that's just the hiccups that sometimes happen. Haven't had one of those in a while. If it keeps happening a lot, take a screenshot and post it.

158
Kaelik: Stop. Right now. I do not give a fuck who started trolling who. You're not in kindergarten. If you think someone is trolling, acting worse than them is not the answer.

Libertad: Posting for the sole purpose of calling someone out for being an asshat is not the answer, either.

I am not in the mood for arguing who is the worse shitposter here. Moderation on this board is largely private; if we think you crossed a line, you're going to get a message about it. If you can get valuable discussion out of this thread yet, do so; otherwise, I'm going to lock it if this shit starts again.

159
Nope. (Aside from any your GM may see fit to impose, as with everything.)

Just encountered this myself on logging in. Currently waiting for Prime to come online.

It is possible, however, that Prime himself doesn't have code-level access, in which case... I don't know, we'd have to take it up with our provider or try to get an update for the forum software or something.
