Other RPGs / Shadowrun 3e and 4e - Share your experiences
« on: April 11, 2014, 10:01:01 PM »
A number of friends of mine (no I swear they're actually friends! In real life and everything!) were contemplating getting together for a tabletop experience, as all but one were interested but had no previous experience. The one was interested, but had very little experience, mostly with 4e dnd which didn't strike him. So after a bit of time, one mentioned he'd heard good things about Shadowrun, and as I was the resident tabletop geek of the party, it was decided I should grab the core books or so, digest the rules, and start a game.

So this is fine, as I dont mind being shanghai'd into DMing, but I have never played shadowrun before. It looks pretty simple, and could be easy to just quickly set up characters for and get going, but I wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with shadowrun, or knew if mythweavers or gitp or somesuch active place were the place to go for tips and reviews.

Anything I should be pre-warned about? Anything good to know for someone jumping in? Just a general information grab here, thanks in advance for anything and everything.

Gaming Advice / Sublime Chord Divine-equivalent PrC
« on: April 05, 2013, 07:20:31 PM »
A bard gets the chance to access the whole of the Wiz/Sorc list via Sublime chord.

Is there an equivalent PrC I don't know of for Paladins or Rangers to access the Cleric/divine or Druid/divine lists respectively for higher spellcasting for these classes? I know the bard is a bit more devoted caster than they are, but still....

Divine Crusader is close, but it really only adds one domain. Anything with higher spells and a wider selection?

Min/Max 3.x / Character Build Thought-Experiment: The PC
« on: March 22, 2013, 12:04:57 AM »
For when your character needs to be VERY genre savvy to survive a particularly cruel dungeon master.

For when you want to make that DM even more dangerous by taunting him.

The PC is the character that is the typical meta-conscious adventurer. He's played too many videogames to give a shit. He stuns the paladin by worshiping a sentient and fickle heathen god, sometimes named Icosahedron. He's Marvel's Deadpool meets 8-Bit Theater's Red Mage.

I for fun wanted to build a character that emulates videogamers and their characters. I have a few ability ideas he needs to have, but i'm always open for other pointers as to classics that I missed. I'd love to see how much can be achieved pre-20th in a semi-optimal build. And because this is simply for fun, let's assume Wiz 20 is too boring. So :fo, trolls.

Abilities the character would need:
  • "Z"-targeting - The character can lock-on to a foe, usually for enhanced combat efficacy, but also to interact at a distance. No idea, here.
[ii] Found(mostly)! Faery Fire for constant shot at foe + Mindsight abuse to always know where foe is (mostly)
  • View Health bars - the character can always see when a companion or foe is "in the red".
[ii] Deathwatch means you can see the dying (blinking red), and combat awareness means everyone near you has their HP revealed.
  • Reload - Cause sometimes, you just need to load from the last save.
[ii] From last save point? Contingent Word of Recall
[ii] With an actual save point? Save-game Trick
  • Hammer-Space Inventory - I will carry ALL of my things ALL of the time!
[ii]Easy, Handy haversack, done.
  • Extra lives - Floating hearts in the upper left not required
[ii] Clone abuse; combo with Arcane mark + Instant summons?
[ii] Hmmmm, Phylactery? Psionic lich? :bigeyes Would make sense for powergamers....
[ii] Tattoo of fresh life, or whatever the hell it might be called!

And obviously, maxing out Gather Info is a must (because how else do you get quests?). What am I missing? I know there must be something I'm not thinking of.

Min/Max 3.x / Going back a bit; A Forgotten Realms Dwarven Cleric
« on: February 22, 2013, 09:30:31 PM »
So I recently joined a game. It's going to be City of the Spider Queen (no spoilers, I've never played through this). I have decided to play a cleric, cause it's been a LONG time since I played a cleric.

Except it's also been a long time since I've been restricted to "Core books (PHB, DMG, MM) + most Forgotten Realms books", and most of the tricks I know of are SHOT! Not a lot of my favorite prestige classes (No Ordained Champ, no RKV, no..... well, no friggin anything!), no DMM, no most things I knew about previously. UNLESS I'm missing something.

I've been reading through the Cleric Handbook to salvage things, and since the DM appreciates simplicity over dipping, I am cutting out the class issue and just going Gold Dwarf Cleric 10. I'm going to tank/melee. I so far think I'm pretty much going to funnel everything into a turn undead build. Extra turning, divine might, all that usual goodness.

But first I wanted to ask you good folk, what would you do with 10 levels of cleric and this book list? Just go core and pray (no puns intended)? I'm basically reading through to see what kinds of things I have left.

Suppose you have a class (such as War Mind) maxed out. By the tenth level of the class, you should have 70 pp and 6 powers of mixed levels 1 to 5. Then you take slayer; you're base class was something like ranger or what have you, or perhaps you just chose to have the +1 manifester level raise War Mind. What happens? Do you:

A) Resolve to find an epic progression for the War mind?
B) Establish the pattern and go with it (so Slayer 2, with it's first +1 ML would raise you to 82, or +12pp from last level, and you'd gain your next power the next level, a 6th level since psychic warriors only get through lv 6 powers)?
C) Does it fall to the DM?

There are a few classes, such as Divine Crusader, who would fall into their own divine/arcane categories, and who might be affected by this as well. If there is a consensus, it would be good to note.

A toast, to these new boards, and the continuation of the brilliant gameologists we've met along the way.
