The Evernight Chronicles, Chapter I: Usual Suspects
« on: February 27, 2012, 10:37:08 PM »
((This thread (at least to start with) is for Ash, Cecilia, Ravage, and Unique.  Other threads will be created, split, and combined as necessary.  IA, Jack, Lilly, Radon, and Roy will begin in a different thread to be posted shortly, titled "Walk the Line, Chapter I: Tipping Point".))

The Evernight Chronicles, Chapter I: Usual Suspects

It begins, as these things so often do, with a murder.

Cecilia has been sleeping for a few hours behind a dumpster in back of the Crimson Angel, a rundown brothel & casino down near the far end of the Strip run by a grumpy but kind old lady with a scarred leather face and arms like steel cables, named (for some unknown reason) Mama Pickles.

Mama Pickles leaves blankets and scraps of food out behind the dumpster for those in need, so Cecilia is sleeping warmly and with a nearly-full stomach for once... which makes her rather grumpy when the man in the expertly-tailored black suit wakes her by stepping deliberately on a piece of broken glass with a patent leather shoe.

He's tall and athletic with a blonde crew-cut, wearing sunglasses even in the perpetual gloom of Evernight.  Cecilia can see metal winking from beneath his sleeves, and he's wearing a conspicuous shoulder holster packing a loaded energy pistol.  His entire bearing screams dangerous confidence.

The man stares at Cecilia from behind his dark mirrors for an uncomfortably long time, before finally speaking in a smooth, cultured baritone.  "Miss... Cecilia, is it?  My name is Detective Strom, of L.U.C.R.E. Security.  Would you please come with me?  We'd like to ask you a few questions."  On cue, a sleek black streetcar silently rolls up behind him on transparent phantom wheels.  The passenger door opens, and he gestures inside.

Half an hour later, Ash is methodically bashing a dent in the punching bag.  Zero had drawn something on it in masking tape which he swore was the Boss, but really it just looks like a smiley face, so everyone calls it Happy.  It's late at night (well, not really, but Ash is still used to North, it's hard to break the habit), and everyone else is out grabbing a bite to eat, leaving Ash (since he doesn't eat) to hold the fort.  As usual.

What isn't usual is the fact that the doorbell rings.  Normal business comes to the back entrance, and special guests always call first... so this must be something strange.  Ash stops beating Happy into submission and starts to wipe his forehead, then remembers he doesn't sweat.  Damn, being a Lifetorn is weird.  A man should sweat when he punches things.

Standing at the door is a dude in a black suit and completely useless shades.  Ash has seen his kind before... it makes him sad for a moment, thinking of Roy and the way their lives have diverged.  But then he's back at this goon in front of him, who's staring like he's never seen a Lifetorn before.

"Mr. Bishop?  My name is Detective Strom, of L.U.C.R.E. Security.  We need to speak with someone from your... agency.  Would you please come with me?  We'd like to ask you a few questions."

Behind Strom sits a sleek black streetcar on ghost wheels, humming with silent power.  The passenger door is open.

The bell on the door tinkles a half-hour later, and since Unique has been assigned to Hostess duty for this shift, she turns, putting on her brightest, softest smile (which is quite bright and soft, of course).  Ah, a new customer, not one of the regulars, and the expensive cut of the suit is a good sign.  The gun in the shoulder holster isn't a turn-off, you see a lot of that in this part of Evernight, just off the main Strip.  He has a real nice streetcar sitting at the curb behind him, too -- Unique gets a glimpse through the door before it closes.

Before she can say the speech welcoming him to Carousel, the man speaks.  "Miss Unique?  My name is Detective Strom, of L.U.C.R.E. Security.  Would you please come with me?  We'd like to ask you a few questions about one of your... clients."

"Ravage! Get up! Boss says you're going with this guy, um..."  Half an hour later, Gurp the half-orc wrangler bangs on Ravage's door, and Ravage can see the black-suited man standing beside him.  The man murmurs something to Gurp, who continues, "...right.  Strom.  Detective Strom, of Loogie Secrets or whatever I don't care anymore."  The half-orc wanders off.

Apparently Strom went past the limits of Gurp's admittedly limited attention span.  He steps into the doorway.  "L.U.C.R.E. Security, actually.  Would you please come with me?  We'd like to ask you a few questions, and your... Employer... has authorized you to leave the complex for a few hours for this purpose."

Strom holds out a daypass with Ravage's name on it.  Apparently this man has quite a bit of influence -- Ravage has only ever seen one daypass before, and it was hanging around the neck of Arvo Leeth, the Champion at the time.  The Champion always gets special treatment.

Strom waits expectantly.

"Oh but of course." Unique starts, that Aerie accent never quite left her, while her soft smile had no intention of leaving yet. "Just give me a moment to find a cover, won't you?" she said, then turned to one of the ladies nearby. "Bunni? Be a dear and watch the desk for a spell, would you? Detective Strom here needs a few things cleared up, probably just clarifying an alibi or something. You know, the usual."

Bunni gave a giggle as she all but bounced to stand by the desk. "Sure thing!" she said, in a manner that proved that she had more melon under her top then under her skull.

"Oh thank you Bunni, I'll make it all up to you. Shouldn't be too long. Ta ta." Unique said, before turning back towards the detective as she snagged her purse from under the desk. "So sorry about the delay, Detective. I'm ready when you are."

To say that Unique slinked out of Carousel would be an understatement. She moved in a way that only poured drinks should move as she almost glided out the door and across the way to his streetcar. It wasn't the first time she'd been in one, but it had been a while since she saw the front seats of them.

Ravage nods, somewhat amused by the detective's pause.  "My owner you mean.  If it makes you feel better don't think of me as a sentient being, think of me as a trained dog on a leash.  That's how the boss does, how all of them have.  Sometimes I get let off the leash to fight, the rest of the time I'm locked in this kennel."

He glances at the daypass and thinks of the day that he will be the Champion and will have earned one of his own and perhaps a different life altogether.  "The boss says I'm going with you so I am at your service."

Obviously displeased to be woken up, Cecilia shouts angrily at the man as hard as her exhausted body lets her as she turns around, still lying on the ground: "Ugh.. What's it you want?! You stupid c..." She stops readily her sharp tongue when she notices that the man who is in front of her is armed and obviously not an ordinary passerby.

Cecilia gives a lengthy glare back at said man until after he finished talking. Looking away, offended, she replies promptly: "How do you know my name? Can't you just ask what you want here and now? I don't wanna get up; I NEED some sleep..." She feigns ignoring the car that stopped near them.

Cecilia stares at him, waiting approximately the same amount of time before giving a reply on a more neutral tone: ".. Cozyness alone is not what'll attract me, Mr Detective Strom.. Could you be so kind as to give me some more details, else I'll pass, if you don't mind."

Strom sighs, and rubs his head tiredly.  "An important man was murdered here last night, a L.U.C.R.E. employee.  My team is attempting to investigate the murder, and we'd like to find out if you saw anything.  We'd also like to record your statement for use in any later trials... so you wouldn't need to be called in as a witness."

The look on her face gradually changes from neutral-angry to aggressive-curious as Strom talks. She replies cheerfully: "Well now... It already seems a bit more interesting." She slowly gets on her knees to stretch her arms just to leave one, inviting the detective to take her hand. "Help me get up, would you? It's the least you could do for waking me up. I'll follow you."

Though Ash hadn't expected business - least of all business with enough balls to use the front door - he was happy to have the distraction. He dropped his gloves and gear immediately, though he took some time to respond. The man was armed, and he wasn't yet, which was bad enough for any business. Throwing a light shirt over his torso and tucking it in, he grabbed a heavy looking jacket and a short but exquisite energy rifle of his own before walking over to the man. He did everything slow enough to be steady and non-worrying, but quick enough to look official. As he approached the man, he put out a hand. "Call me Ash, or Agent Wednesday if you have to be formal. Though I am more operative than spokesman for the group, I'd be happy to help you." Ash's voice has a dusty, ashen crackle to it, but retains a deep timbre in a way lifetorn traditionally do not. Doubting the man would notice the differences, he waits for the man to shake or ignore his hand before entering the vehicle.

Each of Strom's "guests" is brought individually to a small building -- easily recognizable as a rent-an-office type place.  The building looks ramshackle, but upon closer inspection is actually quite well-made, and seems to be outfitted with state-of-the-art security equipment.  There are unobtrusive guards, as well.

Each is led to a tiny room with a table and two chairs.  Strom takes a seat and places a couple of small objects on the table, activating each.  He explains, "This one is to prevent unwanted ears from listening in, and this is to record the interview."

He then proceeds to ask a series of questions; after the discussion, each guest is led to a somewhat larger waiting area, with coffee and donuts, old magazines, and a threadbare couch.  Strom requests that they wait there for a couple hours, in case he has any more questions.  The coffee and donuts are free.

Unique:

An elegant elven lady seemingly poured into a slinky dress, her long violet hair cascading along her back and shoulders like a celestial waterfall. Her bright eyes, dyed the same color as her hair, almost invite one to join her side as she casts a glance. Her grace is only equaled by her near achievement of perfection in the field of physical beauty. She is familiar, like the girl who lived next door, and exotic all at the same time, her frame ample where needed, and sleek where desired. When she speaks, to offer her name for introductions, there's a cultured Aerie accent to her voice. Her voice, almost as sweet as the honey perfume she's wearing. Her presence is almost intoxicating.

Such a look could only truly happen by design. If that's the case, when they crafted her... they broke the mold. They probably also shattered the mold maker as well.

After his "interview", a large warforged enters the waiting area.  He is obviously well built and reinforced, and traces of mithral can be seen in his construction though he seems to be unarmed.  He scans the room when he enters, quickly moving to stand in a corner where he can keep an eye on everyone.  If anyone asks for his name he answers with a curt, "Ravage."

Unique gave the large Warforged a once over as he entered. The poor thing, she thought, probably only seen as a thing by the people around him. No one here had the sophistication of a decent Evernight mindset. She giggled to herself, a musical... almost fae sound. The sheer thought of the terms Evernight and Sophistication being in the same sentence was amusing, but oddly appropriate.

The elegant elf would most certainly ask Ravage for his name. "Ravage." She mulled the name over with a smile. "Seems very appropriate." she started, as she extended a hand towards him. "I'm Unique." She sure was... the domes would shatter if she had a twin. "So rugged and study, and do I detect a touch of mithral?" her Aerie accent was like fine wine. "I hope you don't mind my admiring you, but expert craftsmanship simply must be appreciated." and if Ravage didn't stop her, she'd trace her fingertip along the mithril tracings.

Unique's attention causes Ravage to focus upon her, a slight trace of confusion running through his thoughts.  "How can my name seem appropriate when you know nothing of me and my purpose?"  As she traces his construction he says, "Yes, my frame has been reinforced with mithral.  It decreases my maximum maneuverability but the increased durability offsets that significantly."  Ravages confusion increases as he attempts to determine whether or not Unique is flirting with him.

She sure seemed friendly enough, "Oh but that's simply not the case." She started, "I've seen you in the Colosseum." she smiled now, "Admittedly never so close, but still." she said now in a whisper. "You see, I simply don't get the chance to head to the Colosseum often enough, but I'm not so far gone that I don't know one of the Bowl's star attractions." She sure was taking her time tracing that mithril tracery.

"Try not to forget the rest of us once you're Champion." she said with a smile, as sweet as honey and softer then a cloud.

She turned towards the door, and equally towards the offered coffee, while her fingertips lingering against Ravage's mithril tracery for a moment longer before her arm fell by her side. The doughnuts were all but ignored by her, as she had no place in her diet for them. Vile human inventions. She took a couple of steps towards the coffee, a slinky sway to her hips as she walked, then a glance over her shoulder. "Anything you want?" a pause, "Some coffee?" as the coffeepot was surrounded by a blue-silver glow and started to move of it's own volition.

At that point, the door slides open, to reveal a man who looks unnatural on the other side. There's even chances for someone assuming he was dead or alive in the light, but the man proceeded to move into the room. He had on combat boots and black combat slacks, crisply ironed, and with the gray leather jacket opened to reveal a heavy cotton tank top underneath, you can see he doesn't wear any armor. The man does, however, have some magnificent metal gauntlets with black gloves of either very smooth leather or very interesting cloth; the gauntlets are obviously electronic. More unsettling is the military-grade compact assault rifle that seems attached to his clothing, by what some might know as a combat clip. If given a moment's consideration, the man with the black hair and nearly monotone amber eyes is obviously lifetorn, though why his eyes seem to barely glow is mysterious. He doesn't say anything, but walks confidently into the room, seating himself, and giving each person present a long but concise once over.

Unique gives the Lifetorn a once over. It's curious that a Lifetorn would be hired by a security firm, but well, help was help.

Though, his fashion sense was impeccable. Whoever dressed him obviously knew what they were doing. The holomancy in the eyes was a nice touch. Really made the amber stand out among all the..... lifetorn.

Though, Unique didn't disregard him. She's worked with worse.

Ravage tilts his head in acceptance.  "Thank you for the compliment.  I know that I have my following but I doubt I am quite that popular.  Most sentients don't seem to appreciate a mechanical being defeating flesh and blood.  I have been accused of somehow cheating from time to time."

At the mention of his becoming the champion Ravage lets out a metallic laugh.  "While one of my goals is to become the Champion I don't see that happening any time soon.  I have few friends and thus few people to forget if such a thing comes to pass, though it would be nice to have a day pass and be free in the dome."

"I cannot think of anything that I want at this moment, I do not need to ingest food or drink to sustain myself.  Thank you for the offer however."
