Because polymorph functions like alter self, and alter self says you retain supernatural [and spell-like abilities] from your normal form wouldn't shifter keep Shifting since it's (su)?

2
I'm looking at a Shifter race with Longtooth and Razorclaw shifter traits, do those all attack at full attack bonus, or do some of those attacks revert to secondary attacks?
Also, if I go weretouched master (assumed unerrata'd) can I use my shift ability in my alternate form? And does my longtooth elite feat apply to bite attacks I have in my alternate form?

Thanks.

Game Design / Re: Best game/system/mechanics for social combat

Isn't fate the system that has social hit points, that's always struck me as very weird. Has anyone played it? Does it actually work well?

I'll look into OVA, I've got plenty of time on my hands.

Game Design / Best game/system/mechanics for social combat
« on: December 05, 2013, 09:40:12 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm on a hunt for the best system mechanics for non-combat encounters. Most mainstream games either gloss over social encounters as a single die roll, or have a completely free form system where players are expected to be able to roleplay characters with alien mindsets or far more intelligence/wisdom/charisma than they actually have and everything is up to the DM on how convincing the player (not the characters) is. Does anyone know any games floating around out there that have good and in-depth mechanics for social and other non-combat encounters?

Other RPGs / Cortex System...IN SPAAACE!
« on: January 30, 2013, 02:28:04 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking to run a good ol' hard sci-fi game using the cortex system (http://www.fortestudiosfilms.com/phtotobucket/Game%20Systems/Serenity/Cortex.pdf). Has anyone on here played cortex? I'm looking to see where the system breaks down, places to keep a special eye on to keep play fun for everyone. I read some reviews on other websites, but honestly, I don't trust the other boards as far as I can throw then in regards to balance & how systems actually work.

Thanks in advance.  :)

I'm leaning away from Elan now (I don't intend to be the one absorbing loads of damage - we have disposable constructs for that).
Human is mechanically attractive, but comparatively bland.
Xeph will assist me in dishing out damage, but denies me the mobility and utility of swift-action manifestations.
Synad benefits my buff-phase, Upon reading Multitask more thoroughly, I can use the extra swift action to manifest a power only if the normal actions allowed to [me] during the round do not also involve manifesting a power. Still useful to, say, mentally tap a tattoo relay - but less attractive.

I'll produce a proto-build later this evening. Thank you for all the help so far.

Keep in mind you don't have to use those swift/immeadiate action abilities from Elan or Xeph. Adrent is a d6 hit die class & if you're up in melee every hit is going to hurt so that Elan ability might be a great boon (even though it'll burn through your power points you'll still be alive), and of course the Xeph ability is only 3/day anyway, so for every other round you still have your swift action for utility and mobility.

Racially, I'm currently torn between Elan and Human, though Synad's racial ability is interesting as well (for speeding up the buffing process).

Don't forget about Xeph for their racial feat that grants an extra attack. I know the str penalty hurts, but a level of swordsage and the shadow blade feat ease the pain quite a lot and give you got tier AC.
Hmm... this sounds interesting. Is that Xeph feat from CPsi? Hopefully it isn't just 1xday...  :ahem

My group has always played with it 3/day, but even if a DM rules its 1/day there's a feat for it that you can grab with flaws.

Sun School is a tactical feat from Complete Warrior, the specific maneuver you're looking for is flash of sunset

I like the freedom mantle for ardent, especially if you're going to be in melee combat. You get Dimension Hop as a swift action, so you can teleport in and full attack (flurry of blows), and being a monk you can also take sun school, to get an extra attack when you teleport. Snap Kick (from tome of battle) is also great.

Min/Max 3.x / Pathfinder: animal companion feats
« on: November 05, 2012, 01:59:24 PM »
Hey guys,
I've got a 16th lvl character who just obtained a full progression animal companion (thanks beast rider cavalier) I'm considering bumping its int up to 3 to gain access to all feats and not having to make handle animal checks to do anything. What are some good feats to give to an animal companion?

As of right now I'm looking at a wolverine that is large sized (once again beast rider cavalier), mostly for flavor reasons (My character is basically Robb Stark from Game of Thrones but with a wolverine instead of a wolf.)
22 Str, 18 Dex, 20 Con, 3 Int, 12 Wis, 10 Cha. Rage 6 rounds/day
I was thinking extra rage might be a good feat, but I'm at a loss for what other feats could help (besides the standard animal feats).

Thanks in advance. :)

General D&D Discussion / Re: D&D 5e: For real this time?

One thing that I was very relieved to read is that the developers don't actually care about the feedback given in WotC's boards, in fact they only occasionally go there at all (they read the official feedback given through surveys, and the comments on their articles). It may sound harsh, but I am so damn thankful that the threads in the D&D Next board on WotC are to not have any major effect on the final game. Those people are insane.

Those boards are a satan pit  :banghead

I actually don't think the quick-start Cleric Archer by Dictum is very thorough. If there's another, I've not yet read it.

That's the guide.
It may not be the most thorough, but it lets you know you're on the right track.

Vow of Poverty is also a good way to make sure no one kills you for you loot, they'll just kill you because you're an annoying exalted character forced to rollplay his alingment.

if you are going to use soulbow, use the athas prestige soulknife (which wotc designates as official content) to qualify, instead of the eph base class soulknife.

where can I find that soulknife?

on the athas.org site.

as a side note, if you are allowed to use the practiced mindblade feat (name?) from the dragon mag, you get twice the benefit with the athas soulknife than you do with the eph soulknife.

awesome thanks!

Also take a look at the Lore Warden archetype for fighter. It gives you some nice boons for being int based.

Another big part of playing an int based melee fighter is using combat maneuvers. Disarms and trips and the like are a great way to gain an advantage in combat, and you need high int to get access to those feats.

I know some of the things mentioned by Tonymitsu are 3.5 things and do not have pathfinder equivalents, but its worth talking to your DM and seeing if you can take Knowledge Devotion as a feat. That'll give you a bonus to both hit and damage based on your knowledge skill checks.

I'm always a fan of having alter self as the 2nd lvl SLA. You can grab something with a ton of natural armor like the tren from Forgotten Realms Serpent Kingdom. +you get 3 natural attacks and swim speed.

@mixster: mmmhm. I do like me some Bardchers.
& on that subject, the manticore belt from totemist is great with scouts and dragonfire bards

@muktidata: Yea clerics tend to be good at everything, & I think I've seen a zen archer handbook floating around one of the boards.

I've also found at low levels psionic archers, using dissolving weapon to enchant a set of 50 arrows, can dish out some pretty mean numbers.
