D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Party Needs Help
« on: January 24, 2018, 02:13:58 PM »
Hey guys, I need some advice on helping out my party's team composition. Our healer/utility caster got killed (again), and we don't have the cash to get a Raise Dead. So she needs a new character. The problems that we have are 1) our healer doesn't really want to roll up another support-type caster just to get axed again by bad party decisions, and 2) our party is a mixture of stinky cheese and hot garbage. I'm trying to help her figure out something that will genuinely help the party without being the same sort of character as last time.

The party currently consists of:

  • Knight 9/Crusader 2: Uses a one-handed reach weapon, a tower shield, thicket of blades, and standstill. More or less what one would expect the knight to do.
  • Monk 2/Ninja 3/Rokugan Ninja 3/Fist of the Forest 3: Off-tank, trapmonkey, and primary source of damage for the party. The group is dangerously reliant on him.
  • Sorcerer 11: Literally knows only transmutation spells. Lack of flexibility is an increasing issue.
  • Sorcerer 6/Elemental Savant 4: Fire mage, hyper focused, and down a level due to dying. Good damage ... until SR, Fire Resist, or Evasion kick in.
  • Swordsage 1/Warblade 7: Monkey-grips an oversized fullblade because DAKKA! Usual routine is to kill something and then get dropped. Down several levels because he only shows up to half of the sessions.

All 3.5 material is kosher by our DM, and any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Looks like some of the formatting got messed up in the transition. There are a few "" floating around.

Edit: What's the duration on Hidden Kingdom Jutsu? The guide says "lasting one level", and I think that's supposed to be 1 TIME_UNIT/level, but I don't know what the time unit is. If it actually lasts until you next level up, that's even neater.

Thanks for the catch. I fixed the errors there, and Hidden Kingdom Jutsu is supposed to last for 1 round/level. I made sure to put that into the guide. Thanks so much ^_^

I definitely agree on Wit of the Damned. Would swift-action dirty fighting just be better than sneak attack, or would it be alright?

A little while ago, a friend of mine and I were taking a look at some low-tier classes to see what could be done with them. One seemed particularly bad: the Mariner. Since the group was currently playing in a semi-nautical game, we were disappointed with how terrible that class was. We endeavored to come up with something a little better, so we did some legwork and patch jobs and eventually settled on what we called the Buccaneer. This is the final result of our homebrew class, so feel free to let me know what you think of it! :)

Sample Builds
Here are a few examples of Samurai characters that are ready to be used at a moment's notice. This class has never been and will never be a powerhouse. It takes a lot more work than most classes just to be functional, and the fruits of your optimization labor can often be bitter. Still, if your group is not keen on a high power level, it can be made into a serviceable character.

Min/Max 3.x / Re: Help With Spellthief/Daggerspell Mage
« on: August 14, 2016, 05:52:22 PM »
I would honestly like to echo the Spellthief1/Wizard4/Daggerspell MageX build... tough personally I'd go Spellthief2 for steal spell effect and Detect Magic.... mainly for steal spell effect... it's far to benefitial to sacrifice. Having the ability to steal active spell effects from enemies can make her extremely valuable to the party...

Also the Trickster variant is still very usefull even if she's building more skill heavy due to the bard casting and the greater versatility of the bards spell list... Most of the skills she'd lose as class skill she could easily supliment with bard spells...

Spellthief2/Bard3/DaggerspellX is also a nice option... take Bardic Knak for some nice bonuses to her skills and call it good... Don't forget Master Spellthief to get that casterlevel up and to keep progression of the steal spell ability though her Bard & Daggerspell Mage levels.

She may aslo want to look into Arcane Trickster if you progress past level 15

I love the spelltheif class and actuall wanted to build into Daggerspell myself in My last campaign but changes in the party and events in the campaign prevented it... Personally if I ever get to play a spellthief again I'd certainly play Spellthief2/Bard3/Daggerspell10/ArcaneTrickster5

Thank you for the help! She ended up liking the spellthief/bard idea. Should be all set up for Monday.

Ask her to dump daggerspell for a straight spellthief, and read my sig...

Any particular reason to drop daggerspell mage?

Trickster spellthief is from Dragon Magazine 353, page 84.  ADMG already went over the tradeoffs, but the source might be offputting to you.  Are you okay using Dragon Mag?

Dragon Magazine is fine with me (for the most part) but I think she was going for more of a skill-based build than a caster build. I'll talk to her about it, though.

Hey everyone, I've got a relatively new player in the group that I'm DMing and I'm appealing to more experienced optimizers out there for help with her character. She wants to take spellthief into daggerspell mage (I'm letting her slide on the arcane caster level requirement), and I'm worried that the other players in the group will either horribly outclass her or just shout down the first idea that she had that wasn't someone else telling her to play a heal-bot cleric.

IIRC, her current build looks something like this:

CG Human Spellthief 5/Daggerspell Mage 1
Feats: Weapon Focus (Dagger) [Human], Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Finesse, Draconic Aura (Vigor)

Anything that can be done to bring this up to par would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

What about a Wild Reaper variant druid (Dragon 311)?  If you're a necropolitan, you need Corrupt Wild Shape in order to use Wild Shape.  I'd also recommend looking at Child of Winter and its friends Vermin Companion and Vermin Shape for flavor.  And/or homebrewing an "Undead Wild Shape" to turn into Undead versions of animals.

Alright, thank you very much. Would he still need Corrupt Wild Shape to use the undead wild shape from blighter?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I've already handwaved the mandatory deforestation away since the party is going to be encountering him out in the desert and I didn't want to have the Blighter shipping in truckloads of potted plants on a daily basis to his secret lair. I try not to use material that the players don't have access to just to keep things fair. Here's the preliminary build I've got worked out so far:

Mori Mundi, The Blighted Agent
NE Desecrated Venerable Necropolitan Elf Ex-Druid 6/Blighter 6
Feats: Empower Spell, Energy Substitution (Cold), Natural Spell, Lord of the Uttercold, Corpse Crafter

The plan I had worked out in my head was having him wildshape into a skeleton bear and fight the party while standing inside an uttercold wall of fire.

I know that the Blighter prestige class is not a good one, but thematically it fits very well with an upcoming villain the party is going to be running into soon. The PCs' level of power and optimization varies wildly, and I'd like to make this fellow a reasonable challenge to the group without being too overwhelming (hence why I'm not just making a straight evil-aligned druid). The party consists of a rather tame two-handed OA Samurai, a thrown weapon focused Artificer, a breath weapon focused Dragon Shaman, a long-range sniper build, and a disarm focused Ranger.

Aside from Core, all of the Complete books, Player's Handbook II, Tome of Battle, all of the Eberron books, and the Oriental Adventures book are all allowed. The party was built with 32-point buy, so I'd like to do the same with the Blighter.

I need the Blighter to be level 12, since he is supposed to be fought alone aside from whatever animal companions and summoned critters he may have. I was considering having him be a necropolitan elf, but I'm willing to scrap that idea if it hinders the build. Any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Just added Evangelist to the list of prestige class options. I like what it does, but cross class ranks in Perform makes it a bit rough to get into.

Another fun one is: Optimize an Eagle, ECL 20 and normal wealth.

Once that's done, build his arch-nemesis: Grizzly Bear ECL 20. Because bears are the #1 threat to America  :D

While that is true, using Duskblade also prevents Bahamut's Axe from adding multiple d6's of energy damage to the entire party's weapons as a swift action.

Acid also works much better against objects.

So does Elder Mountain Chainsaw  :D

That's a good idea. Dropping Extra Granted Maneuver in exchange for Dragon Breath would be worth it. As for the breath type, I couldn't remember which was more common. Good catch.
