Title: Soul (Rules)
Post by: Necrosnoop110 on June 10, 2019, 12:37:19 PM
The Deck of Many things Void card says "Body functions, but soul is trapped elsewhere (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm)."

Q: Is there anything else in the game that directly effects the soul of a PC? Is there any way to remove your soul and have your body still function normally? What are the rule consequences of killing someone who doesn't have a soul? Can you detect someone who is soul-less?

Thanks,
Necro

The only thing I can think of is Trap the Soul which also traps the body.

The short description of that card is ripped from the 2E DMG, as is most of the long version except for a change of "speaks like an automaton" to the current coma. Soul Bind spell in core does something similiar to the card, but causes con damage each day as the body has no soul (but if you can afford a 9th level spell, you can afford daily Lesser Restorations). The other things that effect the soul are the many ways to kill someone and make them unable to be rezzed.

As for removing the soul and keeping the body functioning, that's lich and any of its many variants.

BoVD has the ritual sacrifice (+thrallherd) and the Souleater.
But I think the "soul" part is just fluff, the mechanics are something else.

MoI has the Soul-Fused Construct.
Normally constructs don't have a soul.
I never read the Eberron fluff about Warforged
if they occupy an in-between status or what.

Most of MoI deals with souls in general.
iirc the mechanics translate more like spellcasting, than even mentioning "souls".
Doing a dumpster dive there, plus all the fluff too ... would get something.

Shout out for the Riddick scene of the Lord Marshal ripping the soul out of the protesting leader of Helion Prime.

There is the Magic Jar spell, though your body there is functioning with someone else's soul.

Otherwise, it's probably more of an issue of difficulty in resurrecting the victim, since the soul isn't able to return to the body.

My post got deleted? Lost?

Becoming a lich does exactly as the OP scenario.

(1) Thanks all, great stuff.

(2) So if a Lich has no soul (presumably in its pherlactery) how come it is not an automaton? Do lich's speak in monotone?
