The professor stroked his beard in thought. "While technically we could make a report with just the current information, I feel it would be for naught if we didn't at least find a specimen first." He looked to the Chanwyr. The little guy had Fasnachu's favor, since he should have died many, many times in the past. Plus, humoring him may cause him to be quieter....or so he could hope. "Which path, Tarvon?"
Hmm.

Tarvon lifts an eyebrow at the strange question but doesn't say anything about it.  He consults his instincts, then points at the rightmost tunnel.  "That one."

As the three of them made their way through the ruins to the tunnel mouth, they chatted, happy to be leaving behind the evidence of destruction that seemed to linger about this place.

Given they knew what was behind them, but not in front, Lifter was sent first into the tunnel, his massive bulk somewhat ill-fitted to the narrowness of the tunnel. But it was his prodigious height that was of the most impact in this instance.

Only a minute after entering the tunnel, he paused, effectively sealing the passage. “The shadows ahead move.”

Lifter holds his giant maul in front of him, pulling the blanket off and to the side, allowing the magical glow of the weapon's enchantment to spring forth and show more  clearly the tunnel ahead. Ready for danger, he grasps the maul in a thrusting position, allowing the handle to extend behind him beneath his left arm

Hearing the warning and seeing Lifter prepare his weapon, Tarvon draws his flute.

The light of Lifter’s unsheathed weapon seemed only to make the shadows come more alive. They writhed and churned, their awakening motion pulling them down the corridor towards the giant of rock and steel. It was a slow procession at first, at a speed of steps spaced far apart, but it built as the shadows approached towards the glow, quickly become walking speed.

The Professor, for all of his race’s natural ability with the dark, could see no deeper into the roiling maelstrom than any other, for the shadows seemed to swallow everything that went into their nature.

As the shadows grew, the air in the tunnel burned with a sudden cold, and breath misted in air once moist and warm, and strange images flickered upon the surface of the shadow, too tormented to be truly discernable.

If Lifter felt any fear, his monotone voice did not betray it.

"Professor?"

He called back, seeking instruction, information. This was an enemy he was unsure of. What use is great strength when there is nothing to strike?

Beardsley readies his weapon. The Xosha part of one of his runes gives it a fiery glow, giving some more illumination from his dark-blind companions. "Magical darkness. Assume that wherever the light unnaturally disappears a creature dwells. Also assume that they mean us harm.
Hmm.

Tarvon has no interest in waiting for whatever is out there to attack him.  He brings his flute to his lips and plays a short tune somehow reminiscent of a crackling fire.

As they wait, weapons at the ready, the freezing shadows wash over them. Having no more substance than a nightmare, still the effect of their touch is all too real, and a bitter chill, tinged with something foul, leaches its way into their souls.

For the more physically impressive, the chill is not so dangerous, but for the littlest of the party, the ill-minded took hold, ripping into Tarvon’s flesh and turning him a sickly pale grey.

The shadows lingered for a moment, almost as if savouring the taste of their victims, then sped off down the tunnel, departing away and away from their victims.

Tarvon winces. "That was unpleasant."

Lifter makes not a sound as the shadows wash over him, and when they have passed he holds his maul up, shedding light down the tunnel to see what lies beyond the shadows

The professor frowns for a moment as he sees the light injuries on Tarvon, having barely felt anything himself. Goofing off and getting hurt like always. The wee lad is is fragile one. "It's okay, little guy. Lifter scared the bad shadows away." the Professor says, patting the Chanwyr's head, healing all of his injuries.
Hmm.

Tarvon's mustache bristles in indignation.  "We're roughly the same height, I am not a child!  Lifter did nothing at all to prevent that attack.  In fact, the only one who tried to do anything was me!"

With the shadows having fled down the tunnel, what is revealed is a clearly constructed structure, one that has been hollowed out of earth and stone for a purpose. While not overly large, such a tunnel could support the reasonable movement of necessaries at speed, provided they were willing to walk closely together, or had otherwise strong coordination. The floor of the tunnel has been deliberately roughened to provide better grip on what could otherwise become a slippery stone surface, should it become overly moist, and shows less dust than did the open cavern floor, suggesting that at least some of what had passed through that space had done so via this tunnel.

Deeper down the tunnel, at the very edge of where the carried lights reach, there roiled another patch of dark energy, equally as unpleasant as the first. Given the nature of the shadows, and the fact that they fled rather than dissipating after chilling the Chanwyr, they are clearly not natural phenomena. Also visible slightly closer was a dark spot in the stone making up the side of the tunnel that suggested either a branch, or perhaps just a ridge in the stone structure.

The professor points out the suspicious spot. "Lifter, can you disarm it with force?" Although the shadows were only a slight annoyance to him and Lifter, if the traps were followed by a more tangible threat, he feared for the frail Chanwyr's safety. It was better to follow basic safety precautions and break everything dangerous.
Hmm.

Saying nothing, the Constructed advances down the corridor, turning himself side-face when he gets near to the spot. Making use of all the space available to him, he places the head of his maul on the wall behind him, then swings with all his strength at the spot indicated by the Professor

When he realizes it is a side tunnel, he turns back to face the Professor

He speaks quietly in his grating voice "A tunnel"

Now that no one is blocking his view Tarvon goes to investigate as well, although he tries to maintain a safe distance between himself and the tunnel.
