Has anyone tried salvaging Truenaming?
« on: July 29, 2013, 06:28:12 PM »
I was flipping through Faiths and Pantheons trying to pick a deity for a character that I'm rolling up, and I learned that Namers (Clerics of Oghma) are told their Truename at a very young age, and I thought... Hey! That might be neat hook to make use of or expand my character in an interesting way.  I know Truenaming is kinda bad, but if I just make it a secondary feature of my character it's fine, yeah?

...Then I went back to Tome of Magic, and was just... Disappointment doesn't really begin to describe it. Like, Word of Genesis is cool, and there's a few lower-level spells that are kinda nice, but pretty much nothing is justified by that failure state inherent to Truename magic: that damn Truespeak check.

There are a bunch of truename homebrew fixes... this is my favorite.

Dragon 317 has an older take on truenames.  A single feat investment buys into the system.  The noteworthy thing is crafting certain items with your truename allows you to use your current CL rather than the item's intrinsic one.  There are a variety of benefits and drawbacks to it, too numerous to list here.

Seconded, just be aware that Kellus got sidetracked by his other homebrew projects so some parts of it aren't as polished as others.

Take a couple of T.O.-ish tricks ... in the hands
of a Truenamer are not really T.O. at all.

(Semi-) Custom Item of that Truenamer skill
= many more uses pushing it toward ~Warlock.
Still weaker than Warlock.

The Tiles trick * is in the neighborhood of
the old Psi Powerstone Recharge trick.
Except you can't do it til much later,
and way fewer "powers" to do it with.
Still weaker than a PsyWar with Recharge, and later.

* make a magic tile variant potion, break it,
rebuild object with the specific True-thingy,
retrain in new True-thingies, make tiles of those.
etc (afb)
Your codpiece is a mimic.

I realize this is from 2013 XC, but I thought I'd drop this here. Basically 2 small changes makes the truenamer almost too good. Like high tier 3, at least.

Just add a duration multiplier (like casters have for CL) and allow simultaneous willing versions of the utterances unless they are both harmful effect (casters have no similar restriction at all).

The reason PBMC could do that, by the way, is because the Truenamer actually does get some pretty nice tricks. Not many, but they get some.

It's just that that part of the book wasn't edited very well, so you have missing mechanics littered all over the place.

My version of the fix:

1) Drop the Law of Resistance. It's just a nuisance to track.

2) Your DC is 10 + 5 times the level of the Utterance. Add 5 if it's from the Lexicon of the Crafted Tool, and 15 if it's from the Lexicon of the Perfected Map.

3) The Law of Sequence doesn't apply to Utterances where you knew the target's Personal Truename.

What does this mean? Your DC is never going to be more than DC 45 (unless you start applying feats like Quicken Utterance), and you'll be able to spread your buffs around.

You might need to spot-fix a few Utterances, but this will prevent those situations where you have to resort to cheese to play your goddamn character.
