Board Business / Re: Discussion about board migration
« on: February 24, 2017, 01:52:36 AM »
Strat and Robby have both expressed interest/willingness to host the site.
Wait, I don't remember actually doing that. I am willing to help mod, if needed, but I don't think I have the time or expertise to actually host the site.

I am NOT willing to host, however I am 100% willing to be tech support for the site.  I'm in IT and have done website support and coding if anyone wants a basic explanation of my credentials.  If nobody needs me to support this site that's fine too.
I write software for a living. I've never worked with forum software for a living, but I've done a lot with .net and SQL. I might be available to bounce ideas off of.
Close enough. Forum software is very close to idiotproof, the problem is synching everyone across something like 5-6 timezones and life schedules.

I could assist with the move, though time is of limited availability ever since I got employed(and naturally can't access the boards from work). If I have backend access to the new boards I could also help with any outages and emergencies, though to be honest most of the outages we experience recently are from the observed evidence, mainly based on yelling at the host to fix.

The biggest challenges here:
-Getting alternative hosting. This takes money mostly, and finding a reliable hosting for a fairly large chunk of data takes some knowledge.
-Someone to be the RL phone contact person to actually resolve hosting downtime issues. Yes, email works, but if you want a turnaround time on less than a week you'd need someone to call and yell at people to do what they're paid for.
-Figuring out the data format everything is stored in, getting it backed up as raw data, and then we need new board software as well since our version of SMF is very dated. Fortunately most forum software is nearly idiotproof to set up, but translating data  from one to another needs either prior familiarity with SMF backend, or some time to look over the current setup and figure it out. Preferably the former, as she's expressed not having the time to watch over someone else accessing rather private data, but really if we export all the forum data and the current software, any one with web programming experience at all could figure it out given a couple of days, so we just need to pull the site data.
-Having the bandwidth and storage space to house the raw database while doing all this. The site is going to be QUITE substantial, eyeballing it.

So the technical element is very nearly the simplest part.  If necessary I do have a few days leave banked up to assist with.
The bandwidth, storage space, trust and money are not quite so simple.

Sounds like some of the wikia direct linked images from braininthejar might be getting redirected sometimes from their hosting source. Not much we can do about it other than remove those images and suggest that they be rehosted though .

It's unlikely to be photobucket's problem or there'd be a bigger shitstorm.

The statue, at close examination, seems to be  fairly detailed, down to every scale on it's body and wrinkles on it's rough leather-like clothing, except for where it's feet are fused to the rock.  Either some Special had nothing better to do, or he(it's definitely male on close examination) grew out of the rock.

A poke with a fingertip shows the spear to be still wickedly sharp, which isn't expected from something made of stone.

Horizon develops a quiet coughing fit and turns his head away from the villain while she 'changes.' She hasn't attacked him yet, at least, though that'd probably change if she knew he was there. Best to slip away while she's distracted and go find something less volatile to do.

Hopping away and  onwards to Old Harkin, Horizon encounters nothing more exciting than seeing the frozen train resume it's movement at  some point. There's an invisible Special flying somewhere nearby, though whoever it was isn't heading his way, and thus, probably not  a concern.

Kiley quickly concludes this is a science thing, probably tinker science. Were she not alone, she'd announce that out loud and nod sagely. But because she is, and because she has no idea what this thing even is or does besides being really hot, she says nothing, doesn't nod and most of all doesn't touch it or mess with it in any way. If it's heating a pool, that's just swell in her book.

So she turns around and swims back to the heated pool to look for the source of fresh air, instead. If there's a passage big enough for a person, maybe she can make a note of this place as somewhere to go for free time. Beats going to the beach this time of year.

The fresh air source proves significantly elusive, though Kiley thinks she figured out which end of the cavern leads to air, the poor lighting  and steam meant that all she could see was rock, wet rock, water, steam, shadows and a fishheaded guy with a spear.

Well, as long as she doesn't start trying to take his costume apart, Horizon doesn't much care. It's not like he's a hero, despite all the dinosaur-punching he just did to save Streak's neck.

...oh damn, he probably went flying, didn't he? Whoops. He's probably fine.

Horizon settles down to rest for a little bit, keeping an eye on Whipcord in case she tries anything funny before he moves on.

Horizon gets a good view of Whipcord disrobing further, down to nothing as her costume disintegrates, somehow absorbed into her body. Then, after about ten minutes or so of shivering, threads burst out from her skin and wraps her back up again in the full wardrobe.

It seems her power is only over her own hair...
After kicking back for a while in the decidedly more lukewarm and less nice water, Kiley takes a look around and figures nobody will miss her while Jennifer's otherwise occupied. Might as well take another look at that warmer cave. Checking that nobody's looking and that there's still plenty of time in the outing, she dives under and heads right back for the other pool.

Back at the other pool, Kiley, this time without the encumbrance of a nosy Jennifer, soon approaches the source of the heat. Physically painful enough to eventually kill her, but without radiant force, Kiley's blurring intensifies as the water nears boiling, before she spots the culprit by the heat and the tiny but cherry red glow: A glass mechanism drifting in the water, dimly glowing red from the heat. It's shaped like a heap of stacked donuts and emanating boiling water, causing it to move in an irregular orbit.

Weird.

It can't be any worse than "I stabbed someone as a child.  Let me ensure all of you heard that by eternally repeating in interviews that I stabbed someone as a child.  But I'm different now.  I've only been Republican less than a year, and I'm taking time off for a book tour, but I can assure you my stabbing days are over, and I'm one of you now.  Did I mention I stabbed someone as a child, cause I so totally stabbed someone."
Beats things here.

Apparently filing a police report on the prime minister's embezzlement case is Economic Sabotage and something you can be jailed for. :V

Roofhopping goes well, with no sign of Yellow Streak, though he spies Whipcord lurking around, the other villain seems mainly preoccupied with rebuilding her clothes behind a chimney than looking out for other roofhoppers. So far so good aside from the evil stripper.

After GMing a 5E game for a while...it's actually pretty great for low prep sessions, as the looser defined rules make it psychologically easier to quickly eyeball minor rule judgments on the spot(mostly skill difficulties) than to look up a specific rule that covers that issue, and thus getting it wrong from group members with better eye for detail and memories.
It also scales better to the group, since as we all know, published numbers can rapidly grow irrelevant depending on party loadout and individuals.

Effect standardization is also a thing, though it cuts down on variety, you really don't need to differentiate between a dozen different types of debuffs in the game narrative when disadvantage covers most of the basics without having a lot of fiddly numbers which can add up to something monstrous or unexpected.

Horizon emerges back in normal reality...in front of an oncoming train, though it's frozen and immobile due to it's middle carriages being within the Distortion. It looks like the train he was riding earlier.

"-Wha?!" Yellow Streak doesn't resist, and accelerates as if Horizon hit a marble. He turns into a literal streak of yellow as he rockets skywards and abruptly vanishes.

Now it's just Horizon facing seven angry ancestors of birds, which flap furiously after him.

He'll be fine. Horizon keeps running in search of the boundary, keeping half an eye out for more dinosaurs that might have heard the noise.

...goddammit.

Horizon spins around and heads back toward the fight, such as it is, ready to apply the time-honored combat style of beating a dinosaur with another dinosaur.

Horizon's touch hammers into the beast like a train's impact, flinging it spinning off into the distance. Which was good. Yellow Streak on the other hand, takes the opportunity to swat at another dinosaur in slow motion, which the beast neatly evades.

The rest of the flock descends upon the pair, biting furiously, but only leaving bruises upon Yellow Streak. Horizon fares less well, as a pair clamps onto his jacket and teeth cut through, though they didn't get a good grip.
"Ahh, fuck fuck fuck! Get them off me!"

OOC: Flying Dino 1: Bruise x1, Dazed, flying 250m away and likely not coming back.
Dinors 2-8 are still present
Yellow Streak Bruised x3, still mostly fine
Horizon Bruised x2,Dazed

Kiley sees little, even with the better light, just more steam, glowing slightly in the flashlight's beam.
Diving down and rejoining the group, she can see Jennifer's already swum off to pester some of the boys.

Still handsy.

Yellow Streak IS being eaten, if largely ineffectually. One of the dinosaurs is gnawing on his leg with a toothy beak as it flaps frantically to keep a grip. Looks like he might have a light bruise. From an attack that hit hard enough to snap wooden poles. "Ow, fuck!"

"Well, okay, easy then. We haven't, so nope." Kiley struggles, as much as necessary and as little as possible. There could be worse places for her power to go off on her, but still. "Stop it... come to think of it, aren't people going to start looking for us sometime?"
"Tch."

Jennifer releases her prey, "What's the worst that could happen?"

"...Yellow Streak? Really?" Horizon makes a face behind the safety of his helmet. "Well, listen. I'm gonna leave, like Whipcord did, and like I strongly recommend you do before the dinosaurs show up. I'm not really interested in fighting, but if you want to posture more, let's do it somewhere a little safer." Without waiting for a response, he starts heading in search of a way out of the distortion.

(click to show/hide)

"Yep!"Yellow Streak gives Horizon a suspicious look, but does not attack, "...what dinosaurs?"

Leaping away from the incoming dinosaurs, Horizon doesn't seem to cross the Distortion boundary yet. Looks like a big one.

This was a good move, as a flock of flying dinosaurs explode from the treeline and make straight for Yellow Streak. "Fuck!"

Kiley allows herself to be manhandled, the key to not having her power go off at the drop of a hat. "Well, yeah. Duh. That's why I mention it." She rolls her eyes. "But, like, I never really thought about it? So, I dunno. Are we automatically a thing if we just hang out all the time? Do we qualify when we make out? Like, where's the cut-off point?"

"When you bang. Duh." She spins Kiley around, "You aren't THAT dense, are you?"

Kiley is getting the feeling that their absence is likely to be noticed by now. And also Jennifer's too handsy.

Horizon sighs deeply. Perceptive, this guy. He hops onto the treetop and waves lazily. "Hi. You should really watch where you throw things."

"Who're you?" He takes up a fighting stance, "A villain? Yellow Streak will defeat you and your obscene woman!"

Horizon senses numerous shapes approaching beneath the treeline, some kind of man sized flying creatures, judging by the speed, likely attracted by the noise.

Kiley responds by... seriously considering the question. Albeit not in a very serious manner. "Uh. Hm. I guess we did literally go for dinner and a movie?"

Jennifer gives her an open mouthed look as her expected retort falls completely flat, the grabs Kiley to knuckle her on the head "You're really that dense, Kiley. That's a date!"
