3.5 Core Rulebooks will be reprinted!
« on: June 25, 2012, 08:49:35 AM »
Wizards Announcement

WotC will be reprinting the PHB, DMG, and MM.  They've also got a survey up to ask which other books players may want to see re-enter print.

I wonder if they'll errata things, like the Monk class.

No, silly, the monk is working exactly as intended!

Naw, it'd take up development resources to 'fix' those rules, and if they fix anything they risk pissing people off.

For the survey, I voted based on what errata I want to see printed.

EDIT: I figure they could screw up transferring the errata to the new books and provide new loopholes or new data for old arguments.  Kobolds are/not true dragons for example.

I want to rig the survey so they reprint Tome of Battle, just so they're forced to look at the errata and realize how badly they botched that.

I bet you would just get a gilded copy of the current mess that nobody thought to fix.

 :???

I have to wonder at the marketing reasons
for doing this.  Why ?!  Don't most of wotc's
customers have internet access?
I can see reprinting 1e ... and it'd be nice
to get a c.o.-type mob hashing out all those
old rules.  But 3rd edition ...  :-\

By which you mean "don't most of WotC's customers have the ability to download illicit copies?", I guess? (If you're referring to the SRD, though, it's deliberately not quite complete.)

Me, I'd be happy to get another crack at picking up 3.5 books from the publisher.

At the very least, having copies with the errata already applied will be most helpful.

I already voted in that survey and couldn't click Tome of Battle fast enough.

And now my local group can stop using my beat-to-all-holy-fuck limited edition PHB, as we will be getting new ones.

Sorry, but demanding I buy three books for one game again is a little much for me. Specially since this is the fourth time they have tried it (3.0, 3.5, collectors 3.5, reprinted 3.5).

Now maybe if I were one of the people publishing it... At least then it would be great.

I feel you. Personally however, I think a reprint is a great idea; over the years, some of us lost books to a variety of circumstances - fire, theft, moving, the vagaries of spacetime - and would like to replace them. Or replace worn-out copies, or maybe get them for the first time. I know plenty of people who are new to D&D since 3.5 went out of print, and have found it difficult or impossible to find books of their own.

YMMV, but having the option to buy them again will be nice.

I wonder if this means they don't expect 5e to do well.

It might be possible, but it might also be just good marketing in the form of an almost-apology saying "We realize we screwed up on 4.0 and you guys prefer 3.5.  Here's new shiny books to tide you over until 5.0 hits."

They do want to get some people back from Pathfinder, and scout out how much of a base they have remaining.

I'd be intrigued by this as well, as my PHB is showing some wear.  Although there are other books, like the Spell Compendium, that I would need new copies of as well.

I hope that they won't be a fortune, though, which I suspect they will be.  The other thing is I kind of wish they went the other way with their approach to publishing them.  I don't need a pretty gilt copy that sits on my shelf like a trophy.  What I need is a flexible one that I can use at the table and beat up without feeling bad.  A softcover, fairly cheap book that was well-built would be idea.

Anyone else think the survey is more-than-tangentially-related to figuring out what sort of content we want in 5e?

I got into 3.5 after the books were out of print, so while I got really old copies of the basic rules off of auction sites, I'd love an opportunity to pick up hardcopies of my favorite ones.
Personally wishing for ToB, XPH, and CC.

I never bothered to buy the 3.5 PHB or DMG, so I'd consider buying these if I have the spare funds while they're out.
