Again, Laoise nods. "Probably." After thinking in silence for some moments, she stands up. "Well, I have a few ideas... I think that's all we can find out here. Let's go back. You're probably hungry, right?"

Ren starts to protest, but the sound of his stomach growling cuts him off. His face goes pink again, and he nods mutely while not actually meeting her gaze.

Laoise smiles very slightly and sets about putting the place back in order the way they found it (and taking out the trash that Ren apparently left) before leading the way back home.

Lancer, meanwhile, at a loss for how to further disperse the smoke, opts to just open the window a crack and fans frantically to get it out before Laoise could come back and see the plume.

Laoise and Ren head back through the snow-covered city after locking up the bookstore again. As before, the city is still fairly quiet, and there's very little to interrupt the stillness as they walk. Very little, of course, except for the thin plume of smoke visible several streets away from Laoise's house.

Laoise takes great care not to jump or panic immediately when she sees the smoke. Instead, she just quickens her pace, looking around the other houses in the neighborhood for anyone who's looking at the smoke themselves.

Thankfully, there don't seem to be very many people outside to notice the smoke, and as far as Laoise can tell no one's staring out of the windows. That said, anyone who did look would have a hard time missing it - the house doesn't really have a chimney to speak of, so the smoke can't be passed off as a fire to stave off the cold.

As soon as she's inside, Laoise abandons all pretense of subtlety and rushes down the stairs. The smoke came from one of the basement windows - to the workshop, no less. The horrifying possibilities she imagines are endless.

A large billow of smoke, laced with the smell of various noxious chemicals, hits Laoise square in the face as she opens the basement door. While Lancer's cleaned up most of the traces of the explosion, it's fairly obvious to Laoise what happened here.

Lancer hadn't noticed her sudden entry, preoccupied with fanning the smoke out of the window with a large piece of cloth.

"Don't... what are you doing?" Laoise stands in the door to the basement workshop, trying to make out details of the room - especially, whether the whole place is ruined - out in the haze. "What happened here?"

"Alchemy! Just alchemy! Ack! Don't breath it, you're human!" Lancer stops waving the smoke out of the room and starts waving Laoise out of the room.

"What..." Laoise staggers back and covers her mouth and nose with a sleeve of her sweater. "...Close that window and get out! I'll try to clear it with a spell. And explain what you did to my workshop while I'm at it."

Lancer, looking sheepish, hauls the dehydration dust out of the room, followed by his ass, as he remarks sulkily, "Modern reagents are too pure."

Laoise sighs. "Just tell me what you did so I can clean the air out." Luckily, her wood magic should be well-suited to cleaning air of poisonous smoke. If she can just grow a plant that catches the smoke and traps it in its body... All the seeds of useful trees would be in the workshop, but she should be able to make do with the potted mint.

She rushes up the stairs to collect the pot of mint and puts it down on the kitchen table, apologizing in passing to Ren for the huff. She pulls off the bandage around her command seal and cuts the palm along a vein. As the blood drips into the soil, she recites a generic mantra to calm her mind and support the improvised spell. A growth spurt, focused on the leaves to gather material from the air rather than the soil, picking up poisons and binding them into the plant. The mint will end up unusable anyway, so there's no reason to make the growth sustainable. She can just feed it with her own prana and leave it in the basement...

Ren looks more confused than ever, but sits down to wait patiently. The plant Laoise is working with swells to twice its usual size, sprouting broad leaves and thick stems well-suited to purify the basement air.

Laosie quickly carries the growing plant back downstairs and locks it in the smoke-filled room, leaving it to grow unchecked and eventually die over the next hours once it has absorbed enough poison. She returns upstairs with her hand still bleeding and quietly disinfects and binds it with new gauze and bandages before slumping at the dinner table and resting her head on her arms.

Lancer, upon some serious consideration, decides to stay in the basement before Laoise explodes. He rummages through the shattered boxes and smouldering packages. Maybe the dim sum survived the explosion? A snack would be good.

The blast more or less completely destroyed Lancer's food supply. The only thing that remains intact of the dim sum is a small piece in the corner, covered in ash and dirt.

Back upstairs, Ren shifts a little uneasily in his chair. "...Is everything okay?"
