[IC] Welcome to Slaughtergarde
« on: July 17, 2017, 03:27:20 PM »
For one reason or another, you find yourselves within Sumberton, the city of bridges (or the city of ale, depending on who you ask). The Valley of Obelisks, while peaceful, always has work of some sort or another. Sumberton, sitting on the Marrilach River in the middle of the valley, is a center of local trade. Trade routes from Kovakk to the north and Liir-Hra to the east meet in Sumberton, from which goods are shipped downriver to the Sivar Lowlands, Elsir Vale, and beyond the kingdom of Marrilach. It can be hard not to want a piece of those riches, and there is no shortage of scurrilous individuals seeking a share of the profit at blade point. A good sword hand is always in demand to keep not-so-good men honest and secure the coin in the purse it belongs to. A skilled hunter can make a solid living from the bounties posted on brigands and pirates, assuming he can catch more criminals than arrows.

For those that seek a little more excitement than the boredom of escorting caravans and river barges, the valley's wildlife can always keep life interesting. The Marrilach River's banks are filled with farmland, orchards, and pastures out to twenty miles. But the further one goes from the river, the wilder the land and its inhabitants get. Pick a forest, or a canyon, or a mountain range, and you'll find all of the adventure you could want as it swoops down on you with sharpened claws. There's always one outlying village or another that needs a hand with monsters expanding their hunting grounds onto their doorsteps, and they always ask for aid in Sumberton. Even if the royal army can't or won't lend assistance, there's always someone brave enough, greedy enough, or dumb enough to try.

And so you find yourselves (alone or together) approached by a young messenger wearing the insignia of the Chicane Guild, one of Sumberton's largest guilds of river merchants. His master is looking for hired hands to complete a task of some danger. You seem a capable sort to the youth's allegedly well-trained eye, and he assures you that you will be well paid for your efforts. You doubt he is quite as skilled at appraisal as he makes himself out to be, but the promise of good payment does match the guild's reputation. If you are interested, he tells you, head to the Chicane Guild offices, just south of Sumberton Keep on the east bank of the river, and ask for Vintra Marktunsel. It's first come, first served, so be sure to arrive promptly. Before you can ask any more questions, the messenger dashes off, disappearing into the crowd, likely seeking out your competition for the very job offer you just received.

You make your way over to the Chicane Guildhouse, pausing momentarily to admire the fine tapestries being unloaded from a wagon around the building's side. At your request, a clerk glances at your peace bonded weapons before directing you to wait outside master Marktunsel's offices on the third floor. Every so often, another sellsword or adventurer trickles in to wait with you in the hall. A hard-faced human man looks you up and down, evaluating your every motion, as his obvious subordinate fidgets uncomfortably, uncertain as to what he should be doing. Another man mills about, his confidence plainly written on his face and etched into his sharp grin, while a wispy dragon coils and scrambles up and down him. The aasimar sitting calmly, however, radiates a regal sense of ease. If your guess is correct, these are other applicants for the same position that you have been summoned for. You suspect you may wind up working with them, and possibly with others who have yet to arrive.

<<We've been standing here for too long. It's time to go somewhere else.>>

"Hush, squirt. I know it's hard for you, but it's only been 15 minutes. I'm guessing Marktunsel likes to make people wait. He thinks if they squirm, he can sign them to worse contracts. You don't want to squirm, do you?"

<<Uh.....n...no?>>

The confident young man chuckles, and his eyes flash silvery mirrors for a moment, before returning to their normal emerald green. He sprawls on a bench, lounging and comfortable, while the translucent shimmer of a drake flaps up to the ceiling and clings like a bat, ghostly talons sinking into the stone without leaving a mark.

The man extends his left index finger, which sprouts a silver-scaled claw, and begins to clean the nails on his other hand. Without looking up from his (incredibly important) task, he speaks in a quiet tone to the others. "The name's Janks. You guys get 'recruited' out on the street, too?"

"Yes." Karlat looked the others up and down, eyes appraising. A motley crew, but at least some of them appeared possessed of visible talents. Worthwhile, then, of leadership. And thus conversation. Pointing at himself and then at his companion, he added "Karlat, Cwalu, mercenaries."

There, conversation done.

"Kairon Danvos! At your service!"
The young man reflexively runs his hand through his dark brown hair and extends it toward Karlat and Cwalu in a warm greeting.

"Creator bless you!  Always happy to meet fellow men of action."

Then he turns toward Janks, straightens and bows low issuing a formal traditional greeting in Draconic.

His brown eyes flash gold as he stands. With a wink and a mischievous smile he leans in close and lowers his voice as if letting you in on a joke.

"Be careful how you say that last line. It always irritates the proud ones...don't like to be reminded that there's someone bigger than they are.

So, shall we form a group for our mutual benefit?  I find collective bargaining works best when we have a group identity.  What do you think? A name perhaps? Ask for 50% more and settle for 25?"

Karlat looks at the hand, deliberately not raising his own. "The gods bless no one, and curse everyone. Preach to the gullible, not us." He paused a moment, then examined Kairon more closely. "At least you look like you can fight."

The ghostly dragon swirls through the air, hovering in front of Kairon. <<You speak the true tongue... though your accent isn't very good. Your tongue isn't forked enough. I suppose I forgive you.>>

Janks laughs, and hops to his feet. He extends his hand to shake, and the claw has been replaced once more by a normal human finger. "Don't mind him, he criticizes everything. Your accent was fine. Though I'll admit, I get along better with Necessity than with Io. He's very stuffy." He pauses, then gives a rueful grin. "Sorry, inside joke. I call Aasterinian 'Necessity' because she's 'the mother of invention'. Get it??"

"Haha! Good one, Friend!"

Karion's smile broadens and clasps both hands around Janks' in a hearty shake.

He dips his head toward the spectral dragon speaking in Draconic.

(click to show/hide)

He turns toward Karlat.

"Funny you should mention it.  The most preaching I ever did was during a stint as a member in high standing in the God Haters Cult in Sembia, and it usually sounded pretty much exactly like what you just said.  Go figure." The aasimar proffers a cheeky wink that relaxes into a pained sympathetic sigh. "Let's save the theological discussions for later save this one point.  Consider this..."  Kairon leans in close and holds up his index finger for emphasis. "...that since the beginning of time the creator of the multiverse has conspired to order events such that each of us is here in all of our glory and ignominy at exactly this point in time and space to do His will - act out our role in the divine comedy - achieve our destiny in the grand adventure, if you will - and that we though, mired in our lost ego's grasp for greatness, are far greater in His eyes - or at least are of far greater importance than our tiny minds can comprehend."  Kairon's finger begins to glow. "And we can achieve far more together in tune with the great one behind the multiverse than we have ever imagined.  Just look around and see." Kairon activates his marshal aura Motivate Wisdom +5 to Wisdom checks. "I specialize in seeing how He sees - seeing the best in people- and bringing it out.  What do you see?"

Kairon rolls listen and spot checks to see if he notices anyone or anything important with special attention to anything relating to the job.

Listen:
Rolled 1d20+11 : 8 + 11, total 19

Spot:
Rolled 1d20+7 : 19 + 7, total 26

OOC: should I roll these in the roll thread?

A small bookish man sits on a nearby bench, muttering to himself.  Anyone who looks closely at him, seeing the strange small boxlike object at his belt with a tube sticking out of it as well as the strange look of his armor, would be able to recognize his affiliation with the Irim Dwegsho-in-exile and their technology.

Kairon's enhanced senses, as well as anyone else who might be paying attention, catches some of the man's mutterings.  He appears to be speaking to himself.

"It appears to be a group of three, no four humans..ish.  More specific identification is not possible at this time.  They appear to be engaging in what is called 'banter'.  A strange custom.  No apparent technological abilities, although the presence of a small dragon with one of them denotes potential knowledge."

He pauses for a second as if gathering his thoughts, then continues.

"One of them has made an excellent point, joining a group would simplify the situation.  I have learned that those with knowledge are not willing to share it, as illogical as that may be.  Perhaps I should attempt to join in their 'banter'..."

He then stands up and walks over to the group, he is not particularly tall and it is plain just by looking at him that he isn't a rough-and-tumble fighting sort.

"Greetings."  He then stops talking.  His social skills are obviously....lacking.

<<I know what his mother calls me...>> Janks stares at the ghostly dragon, his face a mask of horror and embarrassment. The creature floats in the air, full of unconcern and amusement. <<Don't look at me like that, I'm part of your subconscious. Blame yourself for thinking of it.>>

Janks coughs, blushing slightly. "Uh, sorry about that. He really has no social graces. The name's Janks. How d'ya feel about dragons? I mean, other than mine."

The bookish man looks at Kairon slightly befuddled.  "My mother does not call me anything, I never knew her.  If that phrase was meant to be a roundabout way of asking for my name, I am Novak."

Novak then addresses Janks and the dragon.  "I doubt that you actually know my mother, that appears to be an attempt at humor.  My grasp on human humor must be worse than I thought, I did not find that to be the least bit amusing.  I have studied dragons, it has been proven that some of them have delved into the study of cybernetics and thus they fall into my purview.  I have never actually met one before now however."

The front door bursts open as a young-ish human man comes running in. Am I late? Are there any positions still available? He takes a second to catch his breath and looks around the room. Taking it all in, his gaze drifts to Kairon briefly, then settles on Karlat as the one in charge - seeing as how he's the one with a flunky. He walks over. Hey there, I'm Robb. So, is there room for one more?

Karlat glanced at the newcomer, his eyes appraising the slightly desperate look on his face. He then nudges Cwalu, sending the longspear-wielding soldier forward. "Hello, Robert." The soldier looks him up and down, noticing the reasonable armour Robb possessed, as well as the complete lack of any weapon, even a club. "Alright, what kind of magic have you got hiding under your shirt?"

Kairon turns to Novak.

"Novak, ...good name.  Forgive my colloquialism.  For what it's worth, I never knew my mother either." Kairon's smile fades for just a second before flashing bright again. "You strike me a man of science and scholar.  I'm sure developing our mutual acquaintance would be quite efficacious for a man of your interests.  We'd love to have you on the team."

As Kairon waits for an answer, a newcomer bursts in.  The aasimar watches as Karlat and Cwalu evaluate Robb and then waves him over.

"Perfect timing, Robb.  I'm sure what ever you've got we can use it.  Welcome to the team!"

"Now, gentleman.  As I said before.  I believe...rather...I KNOW we've been brought together for a purpose - one far greater than our own individual goals though certainly not mutually exclusive of them.  I've had what you might call a religious experience of late.  I know.  I know how that sounds.  You probably won't believe me when I say that I'm a skeptic at heart.  Feel free to mock me later, but behind all of the gods and monsters of the multiverse there is a person who cares about us deeply and can empower us to do far more than we even realize.  I know.  He's spoken to me.  Yes.  Yes.  I know how that sounds too.  Now, I'm not asking you to get baptized or anything, but I need you to trust this...or at least trust me for just a moment while I expand your consciousness.  It's not magic, and I'm not trying to pull a fast one on you.  If I do then Karlat and Cwalu here have permission to brain me.  I promise this won't hurt.  Just trust me."
At the word "me" Kairon holds up his finger and activates his Motivate Intelligence minor aura.  Everyone who regards Kairon as an ally feels a soft warm rush well up and expand through their being as their mental faculties increase. +5 to INT skills and ability checks.

"Well fellas? Kairon looks around at each person with an expectant grin.  "What do you know?"

"Alright, what kind of magic have you got hiding under your shirt?"

Oh, a little of this, a little of that... he says, mischievously. Suddenly, the shaft of Cwalu's longspear - formerly straight as an arrow - is now in the shape of an 'S'. A few seconds later, it's ramrod straight again. Actually, now it's straighter than it was initially! And please, it's just "Robb." He winks at Cwalu, and then turns to Kairon.

Feel free to mock me later, but behind all of the gods and monsters of the multiverse there is a person who cares about us deeply and can empower us to do far more than we even realize.

Well, I dunno about a "person," per se, but I can certainly say that's how I've always felt about nature. Robb shifts to look out the window, and his voice gets a little hushed. You ever been up in the foothills, and looked out across the valley, just as dawn breaks over the peaks? You talk about "magic" - he glances over at Karlat, back to Kairon, then again to the window - or "religious experiences?" That's magical. That's a religious experience.

Robb pauses for a second, takes a deep breath, and turns back to the group, a small, contented smile on his face.

Karlat nods in appreciation of Robb's demonstration. "Well done, sir. Well done. I presume you can do that to weapons held by foes, as well as friends?"

Flashing a quick salute to the naturalist, Cwalu takes position at Karlat's side, eyes starting to glance toward the front of the room and the office door. He's clearly impatient to get on with the getting paid.

Kairon knods knowingly. "We're certainly in agreement on the majesty of nature.  So, now that we've found some common ground. I propose we make the most of the moment."

Kairon glances briefly at Karlat and then directs his attention to the group - suddenly all business. "Should we wish to leverage the impending negotiation to our maximum advantage I suggest we engage all of our rational and creative powers to ascertain  as much as we can about our current potential employer and develop a company identity.  What do we know about this guild and the current socioeconomic milieu?  Ideas for a company name? Plausible backstory? List of accomplishments?  Longterm Goals? Immediate goals? Do we want more money? Transportation? Access to guild resources? Marktunsel is going to be done with that meeting any minute and we need to have our story straight if we're going to get what we want." Kairon takes a deep breath and runs his hand through his hair to disperse his intensity.

" ...or we could just wing it and hope for the best."

"Before my encounters with the Most High I used to be something of a . . . well. . . . what you might call a . . . negotiator.

Old habits die hard it seems..."

The door to Marktunsel's outer office opens. A pair of merchants walk out and past you as the clerk inside beckons you through to Marktunsel's larger, inner office.

The office is well appointed in the local halfling style, filled with masterful woodcrafts and warm colors. A large window provides a stunning view across the Marrilach. The large room focuses your attention on the female halfling sitting behind the desk in front of you, guiding you to the realization that you speak with someone of importance, a mover and shaker in the world that is Sumberton. This is Vintra Marktunsel, senior guildmaster of the Chicane River Merchants Guild. She looks each and every one of you in the eye as you file into the room, and begins as soon as you have settled yourselves.

"Two days ago, goblin and hobgoblin bandits raided a Chicane Guild caravan carrying fruit and spices to Sumberton. The spices in particular are key to us meeting a quota set by our business partners in the southern cities. We need them back. My guild is willing to pay you 50 gold for this recovery operation for each complete crate you can retrieve, with a 200 gold bonus for retrieving eight of the crates and another 100 for all ten," she says. "The Chicane Guild isn't the first merchant company to be raided by these bandits, but it will be the last. If you can see to it that their operations are disrupted, permanently, we can offer you an additional 200 gold for your services."

Vintra looks at you, patiently awaiting your response.
