Gaming Advice / Best Tabletop Fantasy RPGs
« on: July 25, 2015, 10:07:56 AM »
So, what are some of the best Tabletop Fantasy RPG gaming systems out there? (I've only ever done D&D and GURPS Fantasy.)

EDIT: I guess I'm really looking for an alternative to D&D itself. My non-D&D RPG knowledge is pretty poor and wanted to know what the other options might be. Maybe one that does it better or at least differently. I didn't want to say this at the outset to prejudice the responses.

Thanks,
Necro

Homebrew and House Rules (D&D) / [3.5] Trapfinding
« on: July 21, 2015, 12:48:39 PM »
DM speaking here. Never been happy with the trapfinding rules. Either the PCs make 8,000 checks per session or they make none. If in a given session they have forgotten to think about checking for traps and they get burned by a trap then they switch over to the 8,000 checks deal. It's either all or none typically.

I was considering some sort of a passive check thing. Where behind the DM screen I keep track of the PCs passive search (10+skill) and compare it to the trap. But what I don't like about that is the second a PC gets burned by missing a trap on the passive search then they will switch back to 8,000 checks deal.

Anyone have any good houserules for this?

Thanks,
Necro

General D&D Discussion / (A)D&D Editions & Book Order (History)
« on: July 19, 2015, 11:02:28 PM »
It seems that when AD&D 1E was first rolling off the presses it was published in the following order:

1) Monster Manual December 1977
2) Player's Handbook June 1978
3) Dungeon Master's Guide August 1979

Just curious but does anyone have any idea why on earth the Monster Manual would have been published before the Player's Handbook? What was the thinking there?

Cheers,
Necro

D&D 5e / Multiclass Required?
« on: July 17, 2015, 11:05:07 AM »
So I'm running a Gnome Wizard (Diviner) and we just reached third level. Every level I look ahead and see all the cool spells that I want asap. Then I look at every guide I can find online and seemingly the common wisdom is that you MUST dip at least a level or two or three. But I don't want to.  :pout

Am I really missing out if I just go straight wizard? I need some advice here.

Thanks,
Necro

Gaming Advice / [3.5] Magic Items & Spell Resistance
« on: June 20, 2015, 10:40:38 AM »
(1) General Question: Are victims of attacks made by magic items eligible for spell resistance?
Where it seems clear to me that one could attempt to use Spell Resistance when under attack by magical items is when it explicitly says they do in the description and when the magic item actually casts a spell that says it is eligible for spell resistance.

Where I am unclear is in cases when a magic items does not actually cast a spell or if they say things like as if affected by spell xxx.

(2) Specific Question: Are victims of the Mask of the Skull eligible for spell resistance?
A specific example that came up at my last gaming session was the Mask of the Skull. The description calls for a touch attack and a Fort save or be struck dead, as if affected by a finger of death spell. Would the victim be able to potentially resist this effect with spell resistance?

General D&D Discussion / Ways to Gain Templates/Monster Classes
« on: June 15, 2015, 03:59:36 PM »
I am not really looking for specific mechanics (although if you have a citation cool) more like just a list of all the roleplaying methods or plot stories upon which a character can gain a template/monstrous HD. I am constructing a home brewed campaign that has templates as a key feature but want the PCs to have flavorful options on how they acquire their templates other than: you just do.

Two ways I can think of right away are by infection (vampires, lycanthropes, etc.) and by ritual (liches, necropolitan, etc.) Any others?

  • Infection
  • Ritual & Spells
  • Forced upon by outside party
  • Bestowed by deities & greater powers
  • Inherited (Family Lineage)

Peace,
Necro

My group hates the Favored Class rule as it stands. They don't like the idea of restricting or reducing access to different classes. Anyone have any houserules that keeps the spirit of certain races having predilections but without penalties?

Min/Max 3.x / Cleric-ing without a Cleric
« on: May 31, 2015, 06:07:05 PM »
Our group lost its Cleric. We've compensated with cure light wounds wands for hit points. But as we are leveling up we are really missing the Cleric's ability to remove ability score losses, conditions, and other status effects.

What's the best way to handle this barring another cleric/druid or cleric cohort. Wasn't there a handbook on Cleric-ing without a Cleric or some such?

Added: I'm looking for non-class options like spells, powers, items, feats, etc.

Thanks,
Necro

General D&D Discussion / Any Prison Escape Adventures/Modules
« on: May 26, 2015, 03:03:48 PM »
Looking to start the campaign out with the PCs already in prison and have the first few levels culminate in them breaking out. Anyone have any relevant adventures they can recommend (I'm running 3E but any edition could be mined for ideas)? Suggestions or previous experience with such a concept?

General D&D Discussion / World of Dragons
« on: February 26, 2015, 12:52:09 PM »
Working on a homebrew world setting and wondered about the following:

1) What would a world look like that was inhabited and completely filled with dragons as the "primary" race? Not talking about a world just with dragons in it but a world where dragons take the leadership role the way that humans are typically presented in Fantasy RPG settings. Not that there wouldn't be humans or humanoids in that world just that non-dragons would take a secondary role.

2) Are there any setting materials or books that depict such a "world of dragons"?

Thanks,
Necro
