D&D 5E ... Next?
« on: July 18, 2019, 02:35:32 PM »
What was/is the history with the "Next" naming convention for 5E? Was it preliminary and not official? Was it official and then dropped? Is still in play? What's the scoop?

Thanks,
Necro

Far as I can tell, it was the development title until it officially became 5E.

Why wasn't it always just 5E? Were they equivocating between 4.5E and 5E or something? Seems like "Next" is a way to hedge one's bets ... but what was the bet I wonder?

I don't know, but it's fairly common for things to have a development title that changes upon release.

"Next" was probably used to stir interest.  It's kinda like how New Super Mario Bros. is no longer 'new' but was new at the time.

It was the marketing buzzword of that time,  Pepsi Next anyone?
