Game Session 3:

Mostly an RP night with very little combat. The PCs met with Bereschel d'Deneith, shared some drinks and had some laughs, before her father, Greigur, came and hauled her out of the tavern by her arm. The PCs stared hard at him but did nothing to stop him. They recognized that attacking the leader of a Dragonmarked House was political suicide. Following that, they went on a boar hunt with "Lord Sir" Gerald Goodblade. During the course of that outing, the Gray Elf Artificer became quite suspicious of "Lord Sir" Gerald Goodblade, and now he suspects the man is a con artist. They went around town looking for work, and were approached by two guards who wanted help investigating the Crypt of the Guard, which they noticed had been broken into. After going in and killing the two skeletons (and the discovering the discarded "Robe of Bones"), they noted that the bones of a local hero had been stolen. They returned to the tavern to enjoy their roasted boar, where Gerald Goodblade introduced them to Shalelu Andosana, a ranger who knows a bit about the local goblin tribes.

What's the general consensus on Bloodclaw Master? After Fighter2/LionTotemBarbarian2/FotF3, maybe take a level of Warblade and transition into Bloodclaw Master?

Natural attacks while grappled. Freedom of movement. Okay, I see that now. Reaping Mauler is based around grappling, not unarmed strike, so it becomes useless beyond medium levels when monsters have natural attacks, FoM, Teleports, et cetera... That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for explaining that to me.

The problem with monk is the Lawful component. I know a lot of people on these boards don't really go for alignment restrictions, but I use them. I realize a few level of monk don't automatically sour a build, but I don't think she'll go for it. Thanks for all your advice.

Okay, so here's the build she's working with right now:

Neutral Human, S16 D13 C16 I13 W8 C10

1 Fighter - Jotunbrud, Improved Initiative, Power Attach
2 Fighter - Improved Unarmed Strike
3 Barbarian - Lion Totem Variant, Great Fortitude
4 Barbarian - +1 Dexterity
5 Fist of the Forest
6 Fist of the Forest - Superior Unarmed Strike
7 Fist of the Forest

And after that, it's pretty much open. Feats like Improved Natural Attack, Snap Kick, Hammer Fist, and Flying Kick improve unarmed damage, but what other classes would be good. I've consulted the Monk's Handbook for ideas, but nothing in there is quite what I'm looking for. Honestly, she likes Reaping Mauler. I know the Monk's Handbook says it's bad, but I can't see why. What am I missing?

Game Session 2:

So, the player characters came to Stormreach on the eve of the Burning Titan festival. After a brief stop at the Wavecrest Tavern, it was on to the festival itself. The PCs made some money participating in local contests and games (wrestling and dagger throwing), and of course there was a lot of drinking (and associated Fortitude and Will saves). When the goblins attacked, the PCs were mostly a few drinks in, though a couple had decided they didn't want to get smashed and were okay to fight. Once again human woman fighter PC (supposedly a polearm tripper) beat and strangled goblins to death with her bare hands. She has decided that unarmed combat is the way to go (she's thinking Fighter/Lion Totem Barbarian/Fist of the Forest). During the course of the evening while they roamed through town helping to quell the goblin invasion, they met Bereschel d'Deneith (spokeswoman for House Deneith in Stormreach) and one "Lord Sir" Gerald Goodblade. They all reached level 2 by the end of the night.

She is taking levels of Barbarian, though. Specifically Lion Totem Barbarian for Pounce.

That's an interesting class, to be sure, but here's the thing: The player in question is my wife. If I start allowing homebrew stuff for her, the other players might (rightfully) question my impartiality. I've also had a pretty strict "no homebrew" policy at my table, so there would be a lot of doubt if I'm suddenly letting in homebrew classes for my wife to play.

Yes! Thank you! I think I'm going to go with what I interpret as RAI with this. So, at 3rd level, an FotF does 1d10 unarmed damage. SUS and Monk's Belt together gives the equivalent of a 9th level monk, which would also be 1d10. So, since your unarmed strike already does 1d10, FotF would bump it to 2d6. Take off the Monk's Belt and it would go down to 1d10 since SUS only gives 1d8 up to level 11. The only discrepancy then would be after level 16 where SUS alone gives 2d6. I feel like FotF and a Monk's Belt should give SOME advantage over just having a feat... I might bump it to 2d8 with all three.

I started a new campaign using the 3.5 rules. I'm using the "Rise of the Runelords" adventure path as a starting point, though modifying each adventure to suit my needs. The game is taking place in the city of Stormreach in the Eberron Campaign Setting. There are 6 players: A female human Jotunbrud fighter; a male gray elf artificer; a male human cleric; a female human druid; a female human swashbuckler; and a male human Dragonborn of Bahamut sorcerer.

We ran a short intro adventure to get the PCs together. It took place on a boat to Stormreach. First they were attacked by Arrowhawks, and the druid almost died in the first attack. The PCs rallied and were able to fight them off. Next they insulted the Sahuagin guide and had to fight off him and his friends. Meanwhile they talked and chatted about their back stories and became acquainted. The female Jotunbrud fighter found a great deal of success in punching, grappling, and squeezing monsters to death after losing her polearm to a successful disarm attack, so she's considering changing focus from polearm tripper to unarmed fighter. We'll see as the campaign continues.

Hey Everyone, a player in my group wants to make a unarmed strike fighter without taking levels of monk. She's looking at Fist of the Forest, but wants to know how that stacks with Superior Unarmed Strike and a Monk's Belt. I've searched this board, looked at FAQs and Errata, and consulted "Ask the Sage" but can't seem to find how this all works together. Can one of you direct me to the proper resources and/or answer the question: If she has 3 levels of FotF, a Monk's Belt, Improved Natural Attack (Unarmed), and Superior Unarmed Strike, what is her unarmed strike damage?

So, I don't know what happened to my old account, but it doesn't seem to work. Perhaps I lurked too long, I don't know. Anyway, I'm Cuindless. I've been playing D&D since 1988. I do acoustic physics research for the US Navy. I'm married with two kids. I like dogs. I play chess, I bicycle, and I have a mathematics degree. That's about it.
