Attacking adjacent creatures while in Evard's Black Tentacles?
« on: November 26, 2015, 10:46:18 AM »
I've looked over the grappling rules, and I'm still not 100% sure how to interpret this situation. Could you attack a creature adjacent to you if you were both grappled by Black Tentacles? If so, what specific rule would you use? The one where you can attack with a light weapon with a -4 penalty?

 :??? good question

idk I'm hazarding a guess toward an answer ...
the eBT's would almost certainly attack the
other creature adjacent to you, so you would
have to somehow enter a grapple with it
to then attack it.  But if the creature was immune
to the eBT's, it could attack you at penalty, or
it could enter into the grapple of You+1BT and
only then could you attack it.

I don't think this is all there is to it.

SirP's guide doesn't cover this

... maybe he could come out of his Grad School + Family "retirement" for this.

I guess there are actually a couple of different questions rolled up in this situation:
1) Can you attack creatures outside of a grapple while you are grappled?
I know you don't threaten the area around you while grappled, but I don't know if that only applies to making attacks of opportunity, or if you can't attack creatures outside the grapple at all.

However, technically you're already "grappling" the EBTs, and so is the other creature. So
2) are you already considered to be in a 3 way grapple?  :???

I read over grappling in the Rules Compendium, and it states that you can ONLY do the actions listed in that section, and for attacking it specifically only allows you to attack your grappling foe(s).  So the answer to 1 would be no.

For 2, EBT sounds like each tentacle counts as a separate grappler, especially since they function as such.  So no, it would not be a 3-way grapple.
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.

Interesting. I don't own the RC, so thanks for that.
