Next, Laoise does a cursory search of more modern sources - a quick survey of famous cowboys. She doesn't have enough information on Archer to make a guess at his identity, so she can only keep in mind some likely suspects to compare what she sees against, if they meet Archer again.

With the library finally exhausted of everything it can offer her, Laoise gently wakes the sleeping boy up and gets ready to leave. The next stop is the bookstore Ren told her about.

Lancer eventually gets up to beat the fires out, though it was difficult to see anything through all the smoke. With luck he might have removed all traces by the time Laoise gets home.

A list of famous cowboys isn't nearly as difficult to find as the rest of Laoise's research. Within a mere half-hour of starting her search, she's narrowed the long, long list down to some possibilities: Butch Cassidy, Black Bart, the Sundance Kid, Wild Bill Hickok, Doc Holliday, and oddly enough, Theodore Roosevelt. She isn't entirely sure Archer's name is among them, of course, but it's a starting point.

When Laoise and a bleary-eyed Ren leave the library sometime in the early afternoon, it's grown even colder. The young boy shivers as he trudges through the snow toward his parents' bookstore, wedged on a street corner in a quiet, out of the way portion of the shopping district. Judging by the fresh, unmarked snow outside the door, no customers have been by today - or, if Laoise had to guess, for quite some time. The shutters are pulled down over the window, and a 'Closed' sign hangs on the door. Ren fumbles in his pocket before pulling out a key, unlocking the door and struggling to pull it open against the drifts of snow.

The library might have been old, but the bookstore is practically ancient. A metal stove sits in the corner instead of any central heating - unlit, of course, and therefore doing nothing to make the shop warmer than it is outside. Books of all sorts sit on shelves that probably qualify as antiques, although the selection is sprinkled with new releases. There's only the barest layer of dust on the counter - up until very recently, at least, the place was well-maintained. A door, presumably to a back room of some sort, sits slightly ajar at the far end of the bookstore. Behind Laoise, Ren runs a finger along the counter, staring at the faint coating of dust it picks up.

Lancer manages to beat the fires into submission with little trouble, and the debris is easy enough to wrangle into a dustpan. The smoke is the biggest problem - right now, with the basement door shut, only a slight amount can leak out. Hopefully none of the neighbors will notice and call the fire department. Between the chemicals in the basement and the shrine holding Aengus, there would be a lot of explaining to do.

Lancer gets out a spray bottle, maybe he can get the smoke out of the air with a generous helping of water to turn it into a black greasy smear. He starts the futile quest.

Lancer's luck with water holds up about as well as it did yesterday. After a fair bit of spraying, he thinks the smoke might be a little thinner. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking plus leakage through the door.

He switches to applying the water on a large piece of canvas and swinging it around to filter the air, somewhat concerned that Laoise could be back anytime now...

Laoise looks around the front of the store as a matter of principle before looking at the back. She never found this place, though then again, she never did go out much. Too much time spent preparing for the War, instead. "This can't have been abandoned for more than a few days..." She knows Ren was deflecting earlier, when she asked about his parents, but it would do more harm than good to press. Instead, after looking around the bookshelves in front, she takes a look at the back room.

Lancer's latest attempt at cleaning - more flailing, really - seems to be having more of an effect than the spray bottle, not that this is saying much. After a great deal of tedious swinging, the haze in the basement seems to have thinned to the point where it would probably be safe to let the smoke out through one of the doors or windows.

The back room of the bookstore, unlike the front, is a complete mess. While it used to be a storage room for extra copies of books, as well as a few rare selections kept out of sight in a locked cabinet, someone has shoved the boxes of books back to clear a large space in the middle of the floor for what Laoise recognizes as a Servant summoning ritual. Off in one corner of the room, there's a crumpled futon and a trashcan half-full of packaging for instant foods.

The small cabinet marked "Rare Books" has had its lock pried off, and a few of the volumes inside are lying around haphazardly. There's a note attached to the door:

Not until you're older, Ren. There's plenty more for you to read out front.

-Mom and Dad

"I found the book in there." Ren points to the cabinet. "And then I moved some things so I could try the ritual..." He trails off, lamely. Laoise gets the feeling he knew she'd already guessed, and that he was just talking so that someone would be.

"Mhm..." Laoise notes the futon and instant food in the corner, but keeps silent about it. She can imagine the rough timetable of events - Ren's parents went 'away', for whatever reason, he went for the forbidden cabinet, of course, and probably stayed holed up here for a day or two preparing the summoning. Then, the Assassins would have moved to the temple with him.

She gives a glance to the strewn books, giving the mistreatment a frown, before carefully pushing the cabinet further open to fully survey what's inside.

Ren bends to pick up one of the discarded books. An inarticulate noise escapes his throat as he tries to straighten a dog-eared page.

None of the cabinet's contents present themselves as overtly magical to Laoise. Most of them are exactly what a bookshop would be expected to keep in a safe place: Rare first editions, out of print volumes, and the like. A small handful of them are on magical subjects - alchemy, mostly - but just glancing at a page or two is enough for her to decide that they're historical texts written by someone who knows nothing about actual magic. They might have some academic value to an accomplished magus who knew something about the craft, but on their own they'd be completely useless.

One space in the cabinet, noteworthy in part because it matches the size of Ren's book, is especially dusty. On its own, this wouldn't be a particularly interesting observation, but where the other discarded books should be are clean patches of shelf where the books themselves caught the accumulating dust. It's not hard to deduce that the book hadn't been waiting in the cabinet for very long before Ren removed it.

"Hmm... most of these are probably valuable to someone who's interested in them, but nothing most magi would be interested in..." Noticing the disparity in dust levels, Laoise looks at the other books strewn around. "Did you take these out after you found the first book? Were you looking for more too or just... looking?"

"I was just looking through the shelf, and then I found this one." Ren holds up the notebook. "I didn't look at any of the others after that...this one was too interesting. They were too, of course, but not as much as this one." He flicks through a couple of the pages absently before looking back up. "Why? Did you think these all belonged to a magus? I'm not really sure where they all came from...my parents didn't let me back here most of the time."

"It's a possibility... since the book you have isn't a mass production, it had to have been written by the magus who made it, so there might be more where it came from. You probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference at a glance..." She passes a finger over the dust in the place where Ren's book would fit. "This space is a lot dustier than that of the other books, though... It looks more like the other books were removed after it, or maybe its space was empty for a long time before someone put it back, without bothering to clean. About when did you take it out?" She gives the other discarded books a look each before putting them back in their rightful places as a matter of habit.

"Um...a few days ago." Ren comes over to look at the cabinet curiously. "I remember, it was all dusty like that when I found it, too. I don't think that would be long enough for all that dust, though...I'm not sure if it was in the cabinet before. I wasn't allowed in."

"Then... it probably wasn't. The spot was probably empty for a long time and then someone put the book in there without cleaning it first..." It's odd, though. If Ren's family were a family of magi of enough caliber to make a book like that, they should have already started training him by this age. It's intruding on Ren's privacy... but Laoise has a hunch. "Can you come here for a second...?" Carefully, she puts one hand on the boy's head and one on the cabinet, she speaks her spell. If it gives her anything that might help her at all, it should be worth it. And if she finds out anything about the book, that could help Ren too... That's how she justifies it to herself.

Ren steps forward, a little apprehensively. As Laoise begins the first words of the incantation, a shudder runs through his body. Screwing his eyes shut, the boy holds still as the spell finishes and the now-familiar rush of unfiltered information hammers Laoise's mind.

At first, it's difficult to make sense of what she's seeing. For a few moments, the spell seems to be showing her the static on a television, but as her mind adjusts Laoise realizes that these are dust motes, weaving around in dizzyingly fast patterns and collecting on the cabinet as books come and go. With each passing second, their movements become more familiar until Laoise thinks she could chart the room's air currents just from the dust buildup. More importantly, she knows almost exactly when each book was added or removed from the shelf. The most important one, as it turns out, was added about a day before Ren removed it. Once she has that information, it's trivial to focus on the rest of the cabinet, and a different scene starts playing out in her mind's eye.

A blond man in a military-style jacket and dress shirt stands in the storeroom, well before the summoning ritual took place. He extends one hand toward the cabinet of rare books, which clicks and swings open. Stooping, he scans the shelves with little more interest than someone picking lint off their clothing, then produces a small book - Ren's book - from the inside of his jacket and tucks it between two larger volumes, where Laoise knows it stayed until Ren came. The cuffs of his jacket are spattered with something dark and red, but surprisingly it isn't blood. It's paint, although whoever applied it seemed to be deliberately trying to evoke images of arterial spray and other unsettling concepts.

The difficulty of assimilating the information from her surroundings as well as Ren's head soon becomes too much for the spell, and it ends more abruptly than usual.

Grimacing, Laoise withdraws her hand from Ren's head and puts it to her temple. "Sorry... are you okay?" After a pause for Ren's benefit and to put the scattered books back in their rightful places, Laoise turns to him again. "You took the book at the first opportunity, didn't you? Were you... here the day before that?"

Ren looks a little worse for wear after the spell, but to his credit he manages to shake it off quickly. "I'm okay..." At Laoise's other questions, he frowns in thought. "...No, I came here the day after my parents left. I wasn't here before then, sorry..."

Laoise nods. "I see... Do you know other foreigners? Someone who might wear a military jacket?"

Ren shakes his head. "The man from your spell? I've never seen anyone like that...He didn't look like he was from around here, but neither are you. Maybe he's one of the other Masters?"
