Phil spends a long moment being a kite, light as he is, before he regains his feet and jogs along ahead of Kitty...backwards and at the same speed. "Kitty, clothes can be changed...still, this seems a good lead to pursue, before things get messier."

The tunnel seems absolutely silent and, inconveniently, devoid of anyone with a sign reading "I am a strange-looking mechanic." Darkness bites off the rails about 3 meters into the tunnel, with not a service light to be seen. Even for the underground, it seems much too cold for July, rain or no rain.

"Yeah, but he didn't look like the kind that changes his style. And did you see that nose? You could pick that out anywhere in a crowd. ...Getting kind of dark..." Lilly blows into her cupped hands and then spreads them as if scattering something. A handful of multicolored sparks fly away from her and ignite into small flames in midair. The flames float lazily down the tunnel on erratic paths as they shift through seemingly random colors, bathing the path in faint, ghostly light. "Aren't there supposed to be lights in the tunnels, too?"

Kitty's foxfire illuminates the tunnel with slowly-dancing lights. The pathway looks almost ethereal in the strange light of the magical flames.

As Kitty drags her two friends deeper into the tunnel, Phil and Leo's senses catch something wrong about the air in the tunnel. A very faint, bitter smell reminiscent of the almond pastries Ziggy served drifts in from the darkness.

Phil exchanges a look with Kitty and then shakes loose from her, jetting down the tunnel to get some clearance and see what the hell is going on.

Leo begins to blurt out a shout to Phil, but hesitates at the last moment upon remembering the stealthy nature of their investigation.

Whispering to Kitty, the junior Wizard says, "Something stinks about this... pun very much intended. Kitty, do you know the tunnels at all? Any idea what might be up ahead? "

Kitty raises an eyebrow and sniffs. "Stink? Don't tell me you don't wash your shirts?" She scratches her cheek. "Why would I know the tunnels? You don't normally go in there. It kind of defeats the point, right?"

"Well, for starters, I figured the tunnels might follow the streets. Second, you're far more well-traveled than I am. Lastly, you're the only other person around now. So... there's that."

"Ummmn... I don't think they follow the streets... there's some that do, but not all of them. And when I'm in a subway tunnel, I'm usually on the train. Now come on, don't get sentimental on me!" Kitty continues pulling forward with only nominal pretension at stealth. "What was that about something stinking, anyway? I mean, we already know the thing is fishy."

As Phil races forward, the bitter almond smell intensifies, and he starts feeling lightheaded. Kitty's foxfire blurs and wavers as his eyes drift out of focus momentarily. He shakes his head to clear it and pushes onward, rounding a bend in the subway tunnel to find the train from the ritual, come to a dead halt in the middle of the tunnel and as stuffed with passengers as it was before. Each and every face he can see looks eerily placid in the pale blue light, but the eyes jitter slightly in place, as though something were holding them still and locked forward. On either side of all three train cars are olive green gas cylinders, hissing quietly as they continue to pump their payload into the tunnel.

The smell here is overpowering, and Phil nearly retches as a surge of nausea hits him. The bizarre sight and noxious gas keep him from spotting the two mechanics, now sporting full-fledged gas masks, dropping from the tunnel ceiling onto him in unison. The foxfire glints faintly off their masks and casts their skin in a sickly green.

One of them makes a grab for Phil's arms, trying to twist them up behind his back, while the other throws a sloppy yet supernaturally quick haymaker at his chin, his breathing loud but steady through the mask.

"Aw fuck, not again" Phil takes just long enough to realize the gaseous danger before whipping his baton out and sketching a spiral in the air, directed at the cylinders, "Anemos Ebalon!"

Behind him, everyone's ears pop as the tunnel air is forced into the path of the spiral, before exploding in a surge of overpressure directed at the cylinders, attempting to hurl them further down the tunnel with their vapors.

...And then the two masked nutters plow into him, binding him and then holding him for a good smack to the head.

Phil's head twinges as the energy rushes out of him and hits the cylinders with a hammer blast of air. All of them go skittering down the tunnel, along with most of the gas - except for one, which unfortunately only gets clipped and slams hard into the nearby wall, spinning off at an angle and making an ominous high-pitched whistling sound.

Phil regains his bearings from the surprise attack, then suddenly vibrates, making it impossible to get a good grasp on him as he slips right out of the attacker's grasp, backpedaling to the other two, "Poison gas! And a fight!", he gasps out as he regains his bearings, wings buzzing madly.

The mechanic yelps in alarm as Phil breaks free of the grip and dashes off down the tunnel. Kitty and Leo hear the scuffle from down the tunnel seconds before he comes running back, shouting a warning.

"A wha-" Kitty interrupts herself when Phil almost zooms right back past her. She reacts more on instinct than on thought, raising a hand defensively in front of her and releasing a sudden breath as if to fan glowing coals. The farthest fox-lights from her flare and split, zig-zagging between the masked mechanics with staccato flashes of bright light. "Wait, what's that whistling?"

Strangled yelps float around the bend of the tunnel as Kitty's foxfire brightens and explodes into a small fireworks show, casting bizarre shadows on the tunnel walls. For all the world it looks as though a silent disco had broken out nearby.

Leo gathers his concentration quickly, focusing on the new information and immediately reacting to his new companion's sudden fleeing.

"I knew these tunnels were bad news... Lutum!"
