Title: Thoughts/ Suggestions/ Questions with the new boards? Post here!
Post by: BG_Meg on November 04, 2011, 12:47:23 PM
First, the old boards are not gone. They were just too full of junk and as we have shared servers, our host got mad at us. So the solution is to start fresh!

You CAN access the old boards. So don't ask. They are just set to read only so no new posting.
The link is still:
http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php

The Moderating structure is:
Admins: Me and BG_Josh: . We own it and pay for it.
Global Moderators: Prime32 and Dan2. Something about those 2's... They oversee things like we do.
Mods: Agita, veekie, Sinfire Titan, and RobbyPants-- they each have specific areas they oversee, so if you have questions, go to them first.

So... thoughtful/ useful suggestions or questions?

Specific notes:
- correct the spelling - if you see a misspelling let us know

- request new game board - request a board here and we will gauge the interest
(for example savage worlds or Mutants and Masterminds)

A pair of thoughts:
First, can the old boards be opened for other old users to scavenge for the transfer of threads? Currently it requires a username/password login (separate from account login).
Second, a minor grammatical thing, can the "Hello [Forum ID]" notice at the top please be changed to "Hello, [Forum ID]"?

This much, I believe, is intentional. We are working to port everything from those forums over here, but it is currently a moderator-only project.

If there is specific information you want access to, please let us know. We'll do whatever we can to port it on your behalf, or at the very least provide you with the information so you can post it at your leisure.

When these boards are fully functional i can set that up.
and I don't know if it's possible to change that.  I will have to look into it (I assume it can).

Can we change the forum settings so you aren't dumped outside of a thread whenever you reply but rather returned to the thread view?

I noticed that quote tags can create forum-only links.  Is is possible to set up signatures to be able to make links to other posts on the forum, but nothing else?

I like being able to link handbooks in my sig.

I see "Profile" has changed extensively since this afternoon.

Along with that, what is "Quick Moderation," and is that actually supposed to be a visible option to toggle for normal users? It's in our Forum Layout subsection of Profile. I tried changing it and looking at threads, but I couldn't spot the differences.

You'll notice it if you GM any PbP games (since then you'll be a moderator). It gives you some checkboxes in board view.

And make an intro post/thread.

Too bright. Can't we ATLEAST get the old look as an option?

yeah, yeah they changed it so it sucks and all but bright enough it feels gleemax-ish

I know it isn't done yet but new boards feel disorganized.

Is there a reason why we can't reply to handbook threads?

Additionally, making handbooks its own board instead of having it as a 3.5 minmax sub-board was a good idea, as it will increase the rate at which I see other board content (as I had the MinMax forum bookmarked)

Is the Ask a Question board supposed to replace the Ask a Simple Question threads from the old min/max board?

Are the timestamps for posts supposed to be MST? I'd think EST would make more sense since that's BG's timezone last I checked and most people can convert time to/from EST in their heads because its used so much.

First, holy crap people, read directions. A lot of these questions can be answered in the "Read this before you post!" thread. Cause that, uh, is what you are supposed to read first.

Right there, in the first sentence it says you have to post twice before you get to other areas of the boards. Tada.

What do you have to do to be able to see the rest of the boards? When logged out I can see them but if I log in I can only see the 2 Meta boards. Do we have to get approval or something?
Read your directions!

How exactly do we recognize someone?
You have to have enough posts first. Wait for it.

Is it ok if we just copy past threads from the old boards? I'm loathe to lose all the psionics info before I even get a chance to read it all.

YES! That's why it says that right on the TOP of every page! "The old boards were full of junk! We're starting over! You CAN access everything on the old boards though at http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/, so copy/paste what you want on over.  Any suggestions post on Board Business"

I set the permissions so while you can't post on the old boards, you can edit your own posts, so that means you can hit edit to copy/paste with all of the formatting and then paste on here. Only on your own posts though.

Will the old boards eventually be deleted, or will they stay as view-only indefinitely?  Just curious in the case of threads that don't get ported over as I have a shitload of bookmarks from the old boards.

If they do, it'll be because our server makes us delete them. The hope would be that they will stay for a long while. If we do have to delete, we hope you'll get a lot of warning.

Will all the old Handbooks be ported over? I read those things religiously

Sure. Start porting. The intention, as mentioned, is that the original author does it, that way they can access their own posts with formatting and own it here too.

These are your boards (that you have the luxury of someone else paying for), so make them complete for you. You're in charge of your own fun.

I don't think so. The diceroller is an addon provided by the host, so it would have to be edited separately by someone with the know-how and permission to do it. Prime might or might not be able to; I'll ask him.

I don't want it there. I want to make sure people only post in the right threads before they start, i.e. agree to the rules. With more junk threads in that section, it increases the chances someone can post there and not agree to the rules.

I don't want it there. I want to make sure people only post in the right threads before they start, i.e. agree to the rules. With more junk threads in that section, it increases the chances someone can post there and not agree to the rules.
Moved the intro threads to another section, made the Noob section reply-only (with every thread except DA RULES locked), set it to require 1 post before the Intro section can be used. I figured it was best to do it quickly.

How exactly do we recognize someone?
You have to have enough posts first. Wait for it.

I set the permissions so while you can't post on the old boards, you can edit your own posts, so that means you can hit edit to copy/paste with all of the formatting and then paste on here. Only on your own posts though.
Hmm is there a list of other boards-related mile-markers?

And well crap. The boards went down right in the middle of copying / saving a large amount of material. Is there any way I can get at the formatting (for other's work) so as to easily copy to other boards?

Will the old boards eventually be deleted, or will they stay as view-only indefinitely?  Just curious in the case of threads that don't get ported over as I have a shitload of bookmarks from the old boards.

If they do, it'll be because our server makes us delete them. The hope would be that they will stay for a long while. If we do have to delete, we hope you'll get a lot of warning.

Good deal, thanks.

Handbook Editor can edit all handbooks.

... That's really disconcerting. I don't much enjoy the idea of someone putting words in my figurative mouth as if I had posted such.

Can there be some "request permission from author" step in that process so that editors can propose edits but not simply override authors?

I would imagine it's more for abandoned handbooks than ones that are currently maintained, given other comments Prime and the other mods have made in the past.

My "Rebuilding Handbook" is, because of the nature of the topic (that to broaden the scope of the handbook would be to stop nowhere), rather short. As a result, once I edit it to include a few more sample builds, I don't intend to touch it unless someone specifically asks. That said, I'll rest much easier from a general standpoint knowing that other people aren't changing my posts which I may very likely not look at again for a long time. Even if I trust that the changes aren't attacks (deletion or clear abuse), I'm a writer, and I'm neurotic about this kind of thing: I want my words to be my words, my art my art.

I can see a new topic button, but can't reply to Min/Max BoEF thread. Bug or do I need to publicly admit that I'm not really an immature kid?

Also, I think I side with Childe. This isn't wikipedia nor one of the free host wiki sites. Someone chooses to write a book in some sort of style about their favorite class and their recommendations for it. An editor's first response should not be to jump in and change suggestions, or wipe the style, or add what they think should be there. In fact, consider BG's stance on Moderation. Forum Mods can't edit other people's posts to prevent liability nightmares, yet the "Handbook Editor" group is literally based on doing exactly that.

I think someone on the mod team looked at the other and said "We need less threads on our forums! How can we stop seeing people post a second class handbook simply because the last one didn't get updated?". But instead of answering "let's just ensure that if the newer version copypastas to ensure accreditation, just like the community has been doing for years, and then just delete the older thread. Like the forum wipe we're doing!", they got hit over the head by their evil twin and replaced.

A Few Things:

1. The website is called MinMax Boards, but the Prominent Boards are not Min Max boards.  I don't think we need a General D&D Discussion, a General 3.5 Discussion and a General 4E Discussion.  Probably just a General D&D Discussion and a Min/Max 3.5 and a Min/Max 4E.

2. You made a Playtime board again.  But perhaps a Game Recruiting board would be more appropriate with a Play by Post board tucked underneath.  A lot of times people want to play games with Optimized characters but not play-by-post ;)  and the best place to recruit optimizers is here.

3. The password setting changed.  I preferred the old boards method of not insisting that a password have a Capital letter and a Number.  I've used the same long string for years and it's annoying to change.

4. Lurkers can see all forums, but registered members have to make two posts to see forums.  I think I know what you're trying to do, but I don't think you can force users to socialize or to obey rules.  They already signed up to the site which is redundant in accepting your policies.  I estimate that you will remove your requirement to post twice to see threads in the future due to hassles.

I'll address 2 of these

3. The password setting changed.  I preferred the old boards method of not insisting that a password have a Capital letter and a Number.  I've used the same long string for years and it's annoying to change.

3- Sorry, that's the way it is. The whole reason we had to start over was too much spam so we're taking every measure short of approving every registration to keep spam out.

4- Not going to happen. We had the same thing on the other boards for a long while and it was never an issue.

Its purely for dead handbook recovery and maintenance. We have quite a number with missing or collaborative authors, which could use an editing mechanism. Thats about it.

While I understand the intent, Veekie, I still will remain one who dislikes the idea of a group of people (rather, a number of individual persons) capable of editing other people's work as deemed necessary.

Though this may seem petty (I hope it doesn't, but I'm not naive enough to think people will not take it simply as childishness), I want to be clear about my reaction: aside from the Rebuilding Handbook (which is insular, and should remain so), and the two treatises I've introduced for the 4e boards, I will not be writing any more handbooks as long as there are others who can edit them without my consultation if they judge my work to be incomplete. I am not opposed to processes of editing at large - I am a writer, and I understand well the value of editing - but the total authority of it (which I also understand well is a contingency against missing authors who cannot be contacted*) leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I do take pride in my work, for better or for worse, and to be unsure that my work is remaining mine out of the judgments of other persons is not comforting. Further, to clarify, there are periods when I will sometimes not visit BG and may be unreachable. It is not unthinkable that someone might conclude that I have gone missing, as even when I am around I see much and post little.

As regards collaborative handbooks, perhaps I don't see the advantage over the account-sharing approach which has been popular.

*Fixing one problem and creating another - as SorO points out, the very problem the moderation limits were built to avoid - seems the worse option when you could simply delete or (preferably, for a community built on the learning process of optimization) archive threads that have outlasted their usefulness and been replaced with more thorough handbooks which give credit for their inspirations, which may include those very outdated and abandoned handbooks.

Will all the old Handbooks be ported over? I read those things religiously
I am working on moving the ones written by the Handbook_Writer account. Or, rather, I will work on that and I have already been offered help.

On the topic of moving old handbooks, are the tags here identical to those of BG? I remember there were some differences between BG and WotC, which made transporting threads from one place to another a bit more complicated. Also, I am considering moving the Handy Links thread I tried to maintain at BG so that people have easier access to the old threads there. Any thoughts about that?

The ones I portered over from BG worked fine though. :)

*smacks head*

I bet it's the same with with Rated M. My Handbook Writer access is allowing me to see & post new topics, but the permission to reply is defaulting to a minimum post count. Like Bhu is the only person to really reply over there and she has over 400 posts.

Guess I need to break that 100 barrier soon.

Edit - Reply access to Rated M appears once you have 50 posts.

Right now, if I'm reading correctly, it's set so that:
No one can start a topic in Handbooks or Unofficial Errata Project without being a Handbook Writer. Likewise, only Handbook Writers can reply to topics in these boards.
Handbook Editors have the above powers and can also edit any post in both boards.
Rated M for Mature lets you reply to your own topics but no one else's until you have 50 posts.

Would it be possible to add non-binary/non-cis gender expressions to the "gender" section of the forum profile? I know choosing a gender isn't required (which is a really good idea, since doing so can be simply annoying), but some people may want to be able to identify themselves and not be forced to give a binary gender, or indicate they aren't cis. It may seem like not a big deal, but it can really indicate that a forum/website/etc is open and supportive of those who aren't cis, even if they don't actually come out.

Could require a plethora of new options though, depending on what school of thought you subscribe to. Simply changing 'gender' to 'sex' would make it more biologically appropriate and it would avoid the unnecessary complications of the former term.

Can we add some functionality to the diceroller?  For example, being able to select "best X of Y"?
I don't think so. The diceroller is an addon provided by the host, so it would have to be edited separately by someone with the know-how and permission to do it. Prime might or might not be able to; I'll ask him.

Yeah, would be wonderful to have a roller similar in functionality to Mythweavers.   As it is a fear many games will just default back to Invisible Castle and others.

A question of forum legality for whoever knows the answer:

Am I within my rights to post class redesigns of non-OGL classes that are not different in every aspect from the original? Say, for instance, I want to post a redesign of the Complete Warrior Samurai that consists of only 5 levels, has the same named abilities as the Complete Warrior Samurai, the same BAB progression, and the same saving throws, only the volume and order of the abilities is different (as it is a five-level class rather than 20); I would not be posting the text of any of the abilities taken from the Wizards of the Coast printing because, I understand, that would very clearly violate copyright.

Or would I have to stick even further to safety and say something like, "BAB: same as printed in Complete Warrior," etc.?

Small (and possibly dumb) question: I have some homebrew stuff I'm working to move to our new home, but I wanted to know where I could put it.

Currently, I have here:
-My bestiary (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1153.0);
-My Class fixes/remakes (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1457.0);
-and this (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1420.0).

Still need to move:
-My library (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=2112);
-and this (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=2097).

All this could be posted at the Homebrew and House Rules (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?board=26.0), or I should post them at the When Inspiration Strikes (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?board=18.0)?

the News header on the list of boards "Home" tab: i never see the 'home' page, i only ever click "Show unread posts since last visit." and "Show new replies to your posts."

if i hadnt marked all as read, i wouldnt have known their was a 'news' header.

just an fyi...

I can't minimize the news (okay that's fine) the metaboard (eh not important enough) or the podcast board (many of us never read/post there, sorry) categories.

Since we are trying to put focus in minmax while encouraging other boards, I am trying to give other boards a shot. Consequently I have to zoom on to the main forum URL. Minimizing things (like the trash, I don't need to read those to behave myself) allow me to focus where I do wish to post. Can we allow the three or atleast last two mentioned boards to be minimized similarly please?

Shame there isn't a minimize or customization for certain boards within a maximized boards categories.

It seems that while you cannot access the PbP-section when you are not logged in, there is no problem what so ever to get into them if they are in the "latest post"-list. If they are to be hidden from prying eyes, that should be taken care of.

I don't know if this is the right place to bring it up, but I've noticed the even though users are informed that "Images in your signature must be no greater than 50x50 pixels," the IMG tags that would be needed to insert one are disabled.

Naturally, I'm bringing this up because I figured out a brilliant way to share my Glorious Signature with the world without breaking any rules.

This is an anti spambot measure.

I don't suppose there's any way to increase the height of superscripts, to get more separation?  It looks kind of weird when a monster has a bonus feat: Iron WillB

If there's too little separation in tables for your tastes, you could put it in parantheses after the feat instead, like Iron Will(B).

Can the administrator name tag color be changed to a less glaring red, please? Whenever I see a bright red name and those five squares of fury, it's distracting and gives a first impression of heavy moderation going on, even if it's just an admin talking in a thread or something. In any case, the strong red color is distracting.

Could we get a Chat feature? I can't vouch for other people using it if it existed, but I know I would. It just feels more casual and supports multiple-topic discussions that don't necessarily need threads.

I hated those wannabe Facebook chat bars. They tend to be buggy or annoying. Then Facebook *updated* and now my problems with chat bars in bars isn't exclusive.

How about some IRC? It's simple, effective, and everyone can use their favorite client instead of talking about the short comings of the one you picked.

For IRC channels you really just need members. Most IRC servers are pretty much open access anyway.

As for a built in chat function...implementing it is liable to break something, even before considering the potential annoyance factor. Its not exactly critically needed.

It would be nice if there were a way to, say, tag certain threads as our favorites, and then have a drop-down menu for easy navigation between them.  I know I could just use my bookmarks, but for whatever reason it feels more organic to do it on-site... any thoughts?

I hate the chat/message function in Facebook. I don't mean that at all (unless I'm misunderstanding "chat bar," which is possible). I mean not just one person to one other person, but rather an open-session chat (similar to IRC) built in as a separate page.

So, whereas currently there's the Index with all the forum navigations, what I was suggesting was a link (probably somewhere at the top) to a Chat page which would be part of the board domain and use the same skin and navigation header and could function as a simple hang-out/haunt for people.

This is based off a random thought I had.

How hard would it be to code a spoiler so that it's contents could not be opened until a specific person posted in that thread?

I'm wondering because it would allow someone to play rock-paper-scissors or a similar simulatneous action selection games.

It would be useful because I'm thinking of running something like this (http://dsg.neko-machi.com/mascot-tan.html), or this (http://www.gamecabinet.com/rules/WavingHands.html).

If this is not feasible, that is OK too.

Post by: NiteCyper on January 08, 2012, 01:52:00 AM
Three things: in-thread search, hover text, and topic title mandate.

1. In-thread search option to search within the thread itself. It would help so that one does not have to say the following: I'm sorry if these suggestions have already been posted and similar suggestions made afterwards are disliked. If any of my suggestions have been posted already, consider this a seconding.

2. On-hover text, mouse-over text, alt. text, title text, comment, or whatever that other boards have that allows previewing a thread (original post) by placing the mouse cursor over the thread title on the board overview and waiting until a text box pops up which is composed of the text of the first post. This is related to suggestion three.

3. Instate a rule that topic titles should be more descriptive than "(need) help" which I've seen (and made) all too often in Min/Max boards. This encourages better thread design. With the second suggestion implemented, this is much less if not totally unnecessary (except for those who do not give a good gist of their need in the amount of text that would be previewed in a hover-over text box). As provoked by this (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=2574.0) topic.

P.S.
4. Change quotation template such that the double quotation marks are 66s instead of backwards 99s and add 99s to the right side.

Would it be at all possible to add Tab codes like on this site (http://forum.faxcelestis.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=515)?

If it would be too much of a hassle, you don't have to do anything about it; it just makes things pretty, and helps keep everything space efficient.

I think you are using it incorrectly. The search bar at the top right of the screen ply returns swears within the current thread if I am in a topic, otherwise it searches only the active board, or if at the main forum page, all the forums.

At least, it does for me, just tested it.

Attachments have been disabled boards-wide. I recommend uploading the file to Mediafire or similar and linking it where you want it.

The question and quotation mark problem is probably something messed up with your settings. Is this the only site where that happens? Do you use some kind of nonstandard browser?

Make sure your keyboard settings are correct. If you're set to a French or French Canadian setting, for instance, instead of English (US or Canada), your computer will assume you're using a French keyboard instead of an English one, which means certain keys are different.

Thanks team, problem fixed.  Anyway, the reason I was trying to post in the fist place was to ask for some opinions on a D&D character.  Now, to be fair, because it's as adaptation of the Bard, I should offer this in song, or at least poetry.  Anyhoo, in lieu of posting the two-page stat sheet here, I'll just ask that anyone willing to give it a look-see e-mail me and I'll send it to you.  It's called "The Charlatan" and I saw on one of your old sites where you had a version of such a thing, but it's more a play-thing character than a useful class.  It just happens that I built one several years ago, intended to be an interesting alternative to the Bard, and actually playable as a legitimate character.  I'd like feedback because any DM I've ever shown it to had a knee-jerk rejection of it just because it was created by a player, and the immediate assumption is that it will be over-powered, but I've gone to great pains to make sure it isn't any more powerful than a Bard would be at each level.  Seems any DM I've tried to show it to is terrified of thinking outside the book.  Or, maybe it really is unusable and I'm full of huraka (Watership Downs), but that seems odd in my thinking since we're talking about a world of magic and dragons here, not reality.
------------------------

I saw where someone posted here ( http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=6543.0 ) about The Charla-tan.
I once was with a group of guys where every game began

with standard stuff and character that came right from the book.
Constructive inventation though,  the DM would not brook.

Reacting with a knee-jerk and implying it’s invasive,
and instantly rejected all attempts to be creative.

Myself, I love to take apart and monkey with the works
And try things out and re-arrange and fiddle with the quirks.

And so I took the lowly Bard, a class I find defective,
Or only useful in a game if playing a detective.

I made him disreputable and prone to speculation,
The gambling type, and terribly prone to equivocation.

One who lives by “Lady Luck” and lives by slinging bull,
And gets so very good at it, his pocket’s always full.

He’ll make you think he’s anything.  A thief, a mage, a healer,
But once he’s used his luck up, he’s a runner and a squealer.

I tried real hard to build him so he isn’t uber-powered
Nor underdone and simpering, like maiden just deflowered.

If you will, I'll send him you.  You tell me what you thinks
Isn’t he just wonderful?  Or do you think he stinks?

hiram

Not possible, as far as I know. Prime can make sub-boards or entire boards visible only to certain membergroups, but I don't know if he can make individual threads invisible (if he can't, there's probably an addon for it). In any case, regular mortal users can't (nor can regular mods, for that matter).

I wouldn't do that to poor old Nans.  I'll just move the feats to the Feats thread and put a link, and steal that post.

Oh, that reminds me, Nanshork. I foreclosed on your mortgage, swindled your parents out of your inheritance, stole your girlfriend, and ran over your dog with my gas guzzling, mega polluting, tricked out SUV/limo/dirigible. I know you don't have a dog, but I bought you one with your swindled inheritance so I could run over it.

I still wish I could minimize board groupings. Even just the ability to rearrange them would be useful. But alas.

Main point: Why are the signature limits so tight? 300 characters is tiny. Just put height / annoyingness restrictions and let it be twenty times as many characters.

This can be particularly annoing if one wants to link things to the signature. Not a problem for me at this moment, but it was before I made some adjustments.

Can we add a [highlight] or [bg] tag?  I'd love to be able to change the background color for text without using a table...

The html for it is:
<span style="background-color:{option}">{param}</span>

Or does this already exist?

Request: A "Bump" feature for handbooks, so handbooks that are updated actually show it. The current method of putting a bump post in the handbook thread is a little unsightly. At the very least, let us post a bump and delete the previous bump so the thread doesn't get cluttered.

bump x2

There are at least 6 different people off the top of my head that I could name which have threads like this... (me, robby, arias, nanshork, phaedrus, garryl, littha, osle, prime... hey there's 9 without looking around.) I'm sure more people would make them as well, once such a place existed.

The point of a signature thread is to be linked to your signature, so the place where it is located is kinda irrelevant if you ask me. I don't see any special reason to make a whole sub-board for them unless it's meant to be some kind of ego board or something.

Then you're basically asking for "yoh dawg I heard you like indexes so we put an index on your index of indexes so you can index while you index".

There's already indexes for pretty much everything based on topics (a lot more newbiefriendly than unknown names list). Plus newcomers have no reason to add one of their own because they surely don't have enough material to warrant one yet. If you somehow manage to lose it, there's always the search function.

But a separate board for them would mean they don't take up space in other forums, so Min/Max 3.x (for example) doesn't get filled up with "RandomDude47's List of Stuff."

Okay, two things here (third doesn't count), both are likely to be shot down by others, but I like the ideas:

One)
What:  A Private board. That is to say, a board where any thread you start can only be read by you.
The Purpose: A place to put character sheets and monsters you don't want everyone else to see. Or anything else you don't want others to see.
The Reason: I think this would go quite well with how many people here are PbP DM's / players.
My True (personal) Reasoning: There are times I want to keep the Meta about my character in RL games a secret, meanwhile I'm constantly directing my group-mates here, most of them know me by my avatar too. So if they come here and I've got a sheet up, bam, they know my Metagame; I am tired of using my signature thread as a workground for projects that aren't ready for their own thread yet. See the heavily WIP class / discipline combo in there now. But it is a place I am reasonably sure that no one else will notice until I'm ready to move it elsewhere, a Private board will alleviate that; I will soon be an active PbP DM, and I would rather have things here, formated in ways I can do here, than on my Laptop, formatted in Word.

Two)
Putting my vote in for a Sig board.
I disagree that that would be "putting our indexes in an Index". It would be putting our index files into a folder.
@ Osle: Your sig has a link to your Monster Classes. As does, well, everyone else's. In your monster classes board, you have an index. Your index (Sig thread), leads to a folder (board), that contains its own index to locate content within that folder (board). You do not have an "index in your index". You have a very efficient system of indexes and folders.

That said... as idiotic as this might sound at first, bear with me
Three)
Mayhaps someone should make an Index.. of our indexes. The Hanbook Index, the Homebrew Indexes et cetra. Name should probably be something along the lines of "Your first stop for info, even before you search"
.... That sounded smarter in my head, and it didn't sound smart. But hey, it is some kind of thought.

Private boards are available, for PbPs and the like, you just need to ask. Generating a private board for every member is however, not possible, since each of these have to be manually made.

-Use mythweavers or similar site to make sheets of your monsters/characters.
-Keep said sheets private.
-?
-Profit!

Or alternatively:
-Keep your personal documents in your own computer.
-?
-Profit!

Revolutionary I know. I myself have quite a bit of unfinished stuff on my computer. I've got like an openoffice word document with hundreds of pages worth of monster classes drafts (too lazy to make a new document for each monster, so when one is finished simply keep writing down).

Sure, it also means it's harder to acess when I'm not on my own computer (like now, so can't update Nintendo campaign), so I'm puting notes on my gmail account in the form of e-mail drafts.

I use Googledocs, or Skydrive, or Myth-Weavers to accomplish the same thing, which also makes it A)Accessable anywhere I have internet connections, and B) accessable on my computers and phone when I don't have access to internet connections due to skydrive syncing, which googledocs CAN be pointed to for an online reference.

Is there support for sitewide CSS? If so, it'd be handy to have a community-based way to automatically define system slang. Things like DCFS becoming Dark Chaos Feat Swap when hovered over.

Additionally, there's malware / addware that puts those kinds of hover-over 'links'. Bringing up those adds also increases your viral risk even further. So you'd have people getting the two confused to deal with.
Plus, while the WoW tooltips thing might seem easier for your use, it is actually a pain in the ass to admin and keep it free from 'infection', since there's at that point another database entry port, and it's one that is usually less maintained and more easily accessed. And I think the last thing any of us want is another hack.

... Dark Chaos Feat Shuffle.

Zero thought it would be funny one april fool's to have the boards do word replacement. Every instance of the word "Green" was replaced by "GLEEMAX!GLEEMAX!GLEEMAX!". Unfortunately, it broke a LOT of posts because it didn't revert back to the original text once turned off again, because he was an idiot.

Hey, I wasn't sure where to report a bug with the board, and it seems silly to make a new thread about it, so I'll call my "bug report" a "suggestion" and pretend it fits here:

When using a glow tag, if you click the "remove formatting" button it removes the /closing tag, but not the opening tag.

That is:

It's not really useful for navigation though since the subforum doesn't have a defined role for reading or looking for content, just a generalized "Stuff Goes Here" bin isn't particularly useful to create, and makes things harder to monitor. Aggregation threads can go under the forum their content most closely match, or off-topic for anything that doesn't have a primary category.
Title: Re: Thoughts/ Suggestions/ Questions with the new boards? Post here!
Post by: oslecamo on July 24, 2013, 04:59:06 AM
Indeed, if you want a signature thread, you can post it basically anywhere and then just link it in your sig. There's no need for a whole subforum just for something whose main purpose if to be linked somewhere else.

One thing I'd love to see, 'though I do not know if it can be done, is to have the "recently unread topics" (which you can see by clicking Show unread posts since last visit (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?action=unread)) be sorted by subforum, and particularly that some of the forums can be hidden. The reason I want this is that it would help to separate the new posts in the Play By Post subforums from the rest. The recent unread topics page is there so people can find discussions to contribute to, and one cannot contribute to someone else's current game.

Is that possible?

"Correct" place for PF builds? Should they go in the minmax forum, or the general PF/D&D one? I'd guess they should still go in minmax, right?

I used to be able to hit "Mark Read" for a forum, and it would mark all of the subforums as "read" too. Now it seems that no longer happens. This was useful for me to be able to quickly see which PbP games had been updated recently (I don't like subscribing to threads... I get enough spam in my email boxes).

So how do I search for through other poster's signatures to find their threads? When I go to "Member" at the top, I have to click on people's names.

I want to be complete, rather than haughty by just sorting by posts and saying "if you don't see them when hitting the next button, they aint worth it"

If it's just about finding members' threads, I don't think there's a way to go around having to check members individually (you can go around checking their posts or signatures for interesting threads by using the search function and setting it to return threads, though). I know there's no signature search function, and I'd have to ask Prime if we can add it, but it seems niche.
