Undead armor proficiencies
« on: June 01, 2016, 04:14:27 PM »
Do undead (mainly Skeletons/Zombies) keep their pre-undead armor/shield proficiencies?  Only weapon proficiencies are stated to be retained in the SRD, but a lot of the example skeletons and zombies are carrying shields...

I don't think skeletons/zombies "keep" proficiencies, but they can gain them from becoming skeleton/zombies.  I don't know about intelligent undead.

Monster Manual, p5, under "Armor Class"
Quote
A creature’s armor proficiencies (if it has any) depend on its
type, but in general a creature is automatically proficient with any
kind of armor it is described as wearing (light, medium, or heavy),
and with all lighter kinds of armor.

So a skeleton warrior has a shield proficiency while a skeleton troll does not.

There's more under "Undead Type", MM, p317
Quote
—Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or
heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Undead
not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor.
Undead are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any
form of armor.

So a skeleton is proficient with whatever armor the Monster Manual/DM arbitrarily says that it is wearing and nothing else?  I was expecting something a little more concrete...

Edit: I'm mainly annoyed at this because both the skeleton template and the zombie template explicitly state that the creature retains weapon proficiencies but doesn't mention armor, then gives the human skeleton example a shield but no armor.  Technically this means that they aren't proficient with the shield according to a strict reading of the quoted rules.

No it only means that specific example of a skeleton does not have proficiency in a strict reading of the rules. No two corpses are the same.
