Title: 2000/1/08-09 Poison Pen Weekend
Post by: veekie on August 27, 2015, 11:37:20 AM
Kiley wakes to the sound of her phone beeping at an ungodly early hour, a message from Jennifer on the screen, 'rise and shine!!! today we swim at bootleggers, meet at school gate at 7. van is waiting'

Sam meanwhile could swear the bed has triggered with his power.

Is it really Saturday already? It sure doesn't feel like a weekend. Kiley tries to blearily roll out of her bed, sheets and all, but her power doesn't let her, and she ends up lying face-down in midair next to the bed. After a shower, she heads out with her swimming stuff to grab something to eat before the get going and shoots Sam a text message reading, forgot I had swimming club today. you do the talking, I guess.

Awoken from a much-needed sleep, Sam glares at the phone for a bit before remembering how it works, exactly. k. might wait a bit though, she might not enjoy being woken up early. The idea of breakfast comes to mind, but...probably not at this hour. And probably not at Big Jim's, either.

After confirming the message she got from Sam, Kiley grabs a sandwich to go from the school cafeteria and heads for the school gate to greet those already present with the least enthusiastic enthusiastic "hi" ever.

At the school gate, Jennifer is already there with what looks like half the club, mostly unnaturally perky despite the early hour and chattering away as she tries to herd them aboard, with limited success. The 'van' is waiting, a bored looking driver at the wheel.

The other half of  the club is trickling in slowly, not very enthused at the idea of going for a swim this early in the morning at this time of year

Van. Right. Kiley repeats her unenthusiastic enthusiastic hi as she draws closer before the realization hits her that it's pretty cold for swimming in the sea this time of year. When she's actually in direct conversation range with Jennifer, she bluntly asks, "We're going climbing instead of swimming, aren't we?"

"KILEY!" Kiley is promptly tackled by the somewhat larger Jennifer, "Did you get mind reading powers?"

One of these days, Jenny is going to fall through Kiley and that'll be the end of it. But it didn't happen this time, so she's fine with it and returns the hug. "Nah. I just realized it's way too cold to go swimming outdoors."
Title: Re: 2000/1/08-09 Poison Pen Weekend

Jennifer leans in, whispering, "Actually, we're going climbing AND swimming, but don't tell them yet."

Then she hauls Kiley to the bus, picking up a Dennis and passing the rather shrimpy boy to Kiley. "Help me herd everyone into the van!."
Title: Re: 2000/1/08-09 Poison Pen Weekend
Post by: Agita on August 29, 2015, 09:23:01 AM
Kiley blinks. "Well, alright then." Unsure what she's supposed to do with the boy, she kind of gives him a half-hearted push towards the van to shoo him inside. She figures she'll just make like an usher and vaguely wave one hand while pointing at the door with the other and everyone will get the message, right?

Dennis, looking startled, is punted aboard, and Kiley is passed club members like packages.

It's not very effective, until three of the larger boys decided that it looked fun and begins bodily hauling everyone aboard. This isn't a club. It's a riot.

Kiley is answered by a girl's voice from the crowd, "Help, help I'm being oppressed!"

The voice is promptly picked up and then dumped into the bus by her friends.

Yep. Just following orders. Kiley keeps doing what she was doing, which isn't a whole lot, until everyone's inside.

After a long fifteen minutes of cat herding, the 'van' is on it's way, driving a busload of students to the cove, where the club members are disgorged at the beach, empty of anyone insane enough to want to go swimming at this time of year. A heap of rope, helmets and protective coats lie on the sand on a tarp. No pitons or hammers though

"This way! Everyone pick up one set and follow me!!"

Jennifer suits action to word and begins marching out of sight as the club performs a confused and synchronized shrug.

Post by: Agita on August 29, 2015, 10:45:44 AM
"Uh..." Kiley shares in the collective shrug and picks up her set. Easiest to just go along, right?

Jennifer leads the club marching into a crack in the cliff face, lit by electrical lanterns placed along the way that Jennifer turns on as she marches forward and downwards. The tunnel is slick with moisture, but easy enough to walk. There's a confused muttering through the marching club, but the tunnel soon widens into a large cavern, where the light reveals a large rippling pool of water after a wide ledge, where two tunnels are blocked  by cheap dividers. The cave is strangely warm.

"Tada! Boys change to the right, girls to the left. We got a heated pool today!"

Now, Kiley blinks for real. "Wait, what? How?" She's pretty sure there aren't any hot springs in Stardawn City. Probably.

Sam, having fallen back asleep and woken up again in the meantime, checks his phone for any more texts from Kiley - and since he's already awake, decides to go ahead and trawl a few news sites to see what the latest buzz is. If there's something interesting, maybe he can go out on a quick jaunt for fun before calling Conspiracy.

Kiley

Jennifer shrugs, "I was planning to come back here in the summer, but it's been hot since sometime this week. Cool huh?"

Post by: Agita on August 29, 2015, 11:55:54 AM
"Well, not cool, but I get what you mean, yeah. Huh." It couldn't be the lava that came along with the Sigma Sync building, could it? Nah. Shrugging, Kiley goes to get changed with the other girls. Hot springs bathing doesn't sound so bad after the week she's had. Maybe she can even lord it over Sam later.

Sam's check of the news finds the usual weekend nonsense about various celebrities, though to his dismay, while the original version of the fic of horror has been taken offline, secondary works have sprouted up like mushrooms, particularly in the absence of noteworthy news, aside from Kong(in the form of a large two headed flying reptile) being shot down by Tinkerbell last night, and Verminlord having stole a truckload of cheese and dairy products for nefarious purposes.

You know. Usual stuff.
Aside from the monster that Conspiracy had unleashed.

Kiley, after some awkwardness getting changed in a poorly lit tunnel with only a cheap divider for privacy, finds the water to be more lukewarm than actually hot. The club members are already splashing and horsing around, though Jennifer seems up to something again, on the basis that she poking around on the far side of the cave with a glowstick instead of swimming.

Oh god. Sam toys with the idea of posting to quash the rumors, but it's not as though he has any way to verify his identity short of shouting from a building somewhere. Instead, he composes a quick message to Conspiracy, no longer caring about the early hour. She's ruined his morning, she can deal with a little less sleep than usual. need to talk with you. it's quite important.

Sam grins humorlessly, pulling on a pair of jeans one-handed. "So Leaf Ronin and at least one other Special at Whitethorn are being jerked around by a Master. Some sort of written mind whammy that works when you read it, and guess who can sense stuff on paper? And in light of that, I think the stuff he was trying to hand off to your brother is a lot more dangerous than a handful of paper cuts. He's not very popular with Franco, you know."
Title: Re: 2000/1/08-09 Poison Pen Weekend

Sam could hear Conspiracy mulling over it with a humming,"Proof? You have any evidence with you?"
Title: Re: 2000/1/08-09 Poison Pen Weekend
Post by: Bozwevial on August 30, 2015, 12:42:30 AM
"Of a sort. It's the stuff Ronin wanted handed off to Scattershot. At first we thought it was just a bad prank, but now I'm guessing there's a hypnobomb on the stuff. Or whatever it is." Sam pauses thoughtfully. "If you could tell something was nearby that connected the dots, that sort of confirms the theory. Maybe. I'd show you, but it's kind of dangerous to go poking around waiting for the Master's trigger to be set off.

...also, it's inside the wall. " And a lot of trouble if anyone caught him with it, though that goes unsaid.

"Right. Ronin and Mariella Caito are victims we're either certain or nearly certain about - my friend sort of put her in the hospital, if that helps. There's a binder in the school's council room in one of the locked record cabinets that had one of the suggestions attached. And there's a Regina Poggio who signed out a key Mariella had, so it's pretty likely she's involved, if not also brainwashed. They're supposedly friends." Sam ticks the evidence off on his fingers.

Sam shakes his head and tosses the phone aside. The message went through, anyway, it's her fault if she doesn't follow up on it.

After getting cleaned up, he sits down to put at least an hour or two of homework in. That's the problem with vigilante antics; they eat into your work time. Maybe after a little while he can take a break to go out and run around in costume.

First things first, Kiley relaxes in the lukewarm water. It's only fair after being woken up at Why A.M. It takes some time for what Jennifer's doing to catch her attention and she swims over to investigate.

"I put them in yesterday." Jennifer scrabbles at a pouch hanging off her waist for a handful of metal tubes, "I've three emergency breathers with me, and dumped another bunch tied to a balloon down there yesterday. Enough to spend a few hours in there. But my skin would get all pruney"

"Riiiight..." Kiley doesn't say anything to the effect of 'just bring a drysuit' for concern Jennifer might take it as a serious suggestion. She might as well tag along, especially in case her friend gets stuck. There's a reason you're not supposed to explore caves alone. "Well, sure. Why not?"

Jennifer takes a deep breath and dives down, climbing through the crack in the stone like an amphibious monkey. Her light and rope spools down and dip out of sight.

A moment later, the light goes out of sight. Passed a corner perhaps?

Shrugging, Kiley mimics Jennifer's deep breath, not that she needs it, and goes after her friend, using the rope for guidance. If she loses track of the light, at least she'll have that and the flashlight she keeps around.

The crack leads into a short tunnel, barely a meter long before the rope angles upwards and out of another hole in the wall.

Kiley emerges in another cavern, lit only dimly by Jennifer's glowstick above, where it looks like there's air from the reflection. The water here is hot, rather like a bath, and a slight vibration could be felt through the water. Tingly.

Curiously, Kiley pops her head out of the water and looks around in this cavern. Pretty nice find, actually, if it's not actually something terrible and unlucky.
Title: Re: 2000/1/08-09 Poison Pen Weekend
Post by: veekie on October 09, 2015, 06:52:22 AM
Jennifer is bobbing on the surface, poking around as she gets a feel for where the hot water is coming from. No shore in this cave, though there's a few small, rounded shelves of stone sticking out within the light of the glowstick, one nearby just barely big enough for one person(or two very friendly persons) to lie on.

The air is steamy, making for a surreal glow from the glowsticks, which fail to show many details, other than the ceiling being rather low and dotted with stalactites, with the odd pillar penetrating the water surface. "Hey Kiley, you sure took your time getting here. Where'd you think the heat is from?"

Big cave, but you'd need a stronger light, or swim out of sight of the entry tunnel to find the other side. There seems to be a rather steady current however, and the air is fresh enough despite the steam that there must be another surface opening somewhere..
Title: Re: 2000/1/08-09 Poison Pen Weekend
Post by: Agita on October 09, 2015, 11:59:25 AM
"Huh." Kiley scans the cave, impressed. "...Did you set up a cave Jacuzzi in here somehow or was it vibrating when you found it?" Taking a swim around, she tests the rock platforms - not vibrating - and sniffs the air. "Well, it doesn't have the rotten eggs stank so it's probably not a hot spring. Maybe it's the cooler water from some tinker's big reactor?"

Actually, she recognizes the smell. And decides she'd best keep quiet about it. Definitely going to tell Sam about the cave and her theory later, though. Something about unexpected perks of vigilantism. And about really avoiding Pyrebird in the future.

"...Oh shit. Yeah, I think there's a tinker with stuff near here. Explains the water jiggling too. I don't think we want to go poking around where this stuff is coming from, Jenny. Don't want to swim into some sciency asshole's heat sink."
Title: Re: 2000/1/08-09 Poison Pen Weekend

Jennifer looks even more intrigued, but after considering things for a moment, plops herself onto the wider ledge, motioning for Kiley to follow,"Discretion is the better part of not getting boiled? Which tinker do you think would stick something here?"
Title: Re: 2000/1/08-09 Poison Pen Weekend
Post by: Agita on October 10, 2015, 08:30:11 AM
Kiley just rests her arms on the ledge and floats lazily in the water. "I dunno. I heard there was one here, but I don't know a name. Someone who's making a lot of heat and needs to dump it somewhere, I guess. One of those science guys who can't work in Harkin's, maybe?"

"Bet you a fifty it's either a villain or a kid"

...yep, that's enough homework. Sam puts the books aside and grabs his things to head out in search of something to do. Virtually anything, at this point - though maybe poking around Old Harkin instead of at home. If he ran into Scattershot right now, he might do something drastic.

Sam, thankfully enough, does not run into Scattershot on his way to the train station, and onwards to freedom. Nothing more notable than a flying girl in a black bikini and butterfly mask flinging what looks like wires at a boy in yellow spandex in the sky above the train...at least until the train vanishes out from under him, replaced with a tropical jungle under a massive red sun. The two idiots were still at it in the sky above.

Distortion.

Jennifer gives Kiley a vulpine grin, "Not there yet, I'm working on it. If you can't pay it with money, you'd have to pay it with your body!"

She pounces off the ledge with a splash.

Throwing a quick look at Whipcord and her opponent to make sure they aren't watching (they probably aren't), he scales a nearby tree. Might be a good idea to change, too, once they're sufficiently distracted and he has enough foliage for cover.

The tree is odd, rather than the usual bark, it's leafy all the way down to the base, and the trunk feels ribbed, but Sam manages to get up without too much of a fuss, as he gets a good view of another tree bending with a loud creak as a large bipedal reptile slowly climbs onto it, hopping slightly on the tilting treetop as the surprisingly flexible tree sways like a trampoline.

The girl catches sight of the reptile and rapidly ascends, even as her opponent flails at the threads all over him.

"I think I've played this game before." Sam starts changing into costume now that there's a reptilian distraction at hand. Helmet first, naturally. The fact that he's in a distortion at all will give away the fact that he's a Special already; might as well hide his face.

The dinosaur bounces and LEAPS off the tree, at Yellow Spandex Boy from behind him...and apparently misjudged the range as it flies just over his head, and crashes loudly into the jungle. "What."

Meanwhile Sam gets dressed while he's stuck to the side of a tree.

Horizon claps a hand to his visor. "If only I'd been dressed already, I could have filmed that. Oh well. Probably wouldn't have made them very happy if they'd noticed." He keeps hanging out and watching, since there's no immediate danger to anyone. Relatively, anyway. He is in some primordial alternate dimension, watching a pair of capes brawling while a dinosaur tries to catapult itself into the middle of the fight.

Much more exciting than homework.

Spandex-boy continues looking through the jungle for his attacker as the last of the black threads binding him fall off, though the dinosaur's movement is clear enough for all to see. It's taken the fall without any injury, and had leapt onto another tree, stretching the poor abused trunk as a springboard.

The instant it rockets up, he dropkicks the rising dinosaur on the head, sending the beast flying, stunned, which was good.

It was flying RIGHT at Sam's location. Which was bad.

It figures this would happen. Half-expecting disaster is what gives Horizon enough warning to extend an arm to flick the flying dinosaur with a finger and a hell of a lot of gravitational force.

The dinosaur, with a distressed hronk, flies up up and out of sight. Yellow Spandex boy casts about wildly, "Who did that?!"
Kiley splashes a bit and shrugs. "Maybe I'll just get Sam to buy me lunch for a month or so and save up."
Jennifer sidles through the splashes, and stage-whispers, "So, you two an item?"

"Who're you?" He takes up a fighting stance, "A villain? Yellow Streak will defeat you and your obscene woman!"

Horizon senses numerous shapes approaching beneath the treeline, some kind of man sized flying creatures, judging by the speed, likely attracted by the noise.

Kiley responds by... seriously considering the question. Albeit not in a very serious manner. "Uh. Hm. I guess we did literally go for dinner and a movie?"

Jennifer gives her an open mouthed look as her expected retort falls completely flat, the grabs Kiley to knuckle her on the head "You're really that dense, Kiley. That's a date!"

"...Yellow Streak? Really?" Horizon makes a face behind the safety of his helmet. "Well, listen. I'm gonna leave, like Whipcord did, and like I strongly recommend you do before the dinosaurs show up. I'm not really interested in fighting, but if you want to posture more, let's do it somewhere a little safer." Without waiting for a response, he starts heading in search of a way out of the distortion.

"But, like, I never really thought about it? So, I dunno. Are we automatically a thing if we just hang out all the time? Do we qualify when we make out? Like, where's the cut-off point?"

"Yep!"Yellow Streak gives Horizon a suspicious look, but does not attack, "...what dinosaurs?"

Leaping away from the incoming dinosaurs, Horizon doesn't seem to cross the Distortion boundary yet. Looks like a big one.

This was a good move, as a flock of flying dinosaurs explode from the treeline and make straight for Yellow Streak. "Fuck!"

"When you bang. Duh." She spins Kiley around, "You aren't THAT dense, are you?"

Kiley is getting the feeling that their absence is likely to be noticed by now. And also Jennifer's too handsy.

Yellow Streak IS being eaten, if largely ineffectually. One of the dinosaurs is gnawing on his leg with a toothy beak as it flaps frantically to keep a grip. Looks like he might have a light bruise. From an attack that hit hard enough to snap wooden poles. "Ow, fuck!"

He'll be fine. Horizon keeps running in search of the boundary, keeping half an eye out for more dinosaurs that might have heard the noise.

...goddammit.

Horizon spins around and heads back toward the fight, such as it is, ready to apply the time-honored combat style of beating a dinosaur with another dinosaur.

After Jennifer dives under, Kiley surreptitiously pulls her flashlight out of her chest and shines it along the roof of the cave, in the general direction of the dark end of the cave. She doesn't dwell on it long, though, just a curious glance before she stows the light again and follows.

Kiley sees little, even with the better light, just more steam, glowing slightly in the flashlight's beam.
Diving down and rejoining the group, she can see Jennifer's already swum off to pester some of the boys.

Still handsy.

Horizon's touch hammers into the beast like a train's impact, flinging it spinning off into the distance. Which was good. Yellow Streak on the other hand, takes the opportunity to swat at another dinosaur in slow motion, which the beast neatly evades.

The rest of the flock descends upon the pair, biting furiously, but only leaving bruises upon Yellow Streak. Horizon fares less well, as a pair clamps onto his jacket and teeth cut through, though they didn't get a good grip.
"Ahh, fuck fuck fuck! Get them off me!"

OOC: Flying Dino 1: Bruise x1, Dazed, flying 250m away and likely not coming back.
Dinors 2-8 are still present
Yellow Streak Bruised x3, still mostly fine
Horizon Bruised x2,Dazed

Horizon winces as the dinosaur bites down, though luckily the bite isn't as bad as it could be. "Hey! Be ready to move, got it?" Without waiting for a response, he bursts into a slightly slower run than usual, slapping Yellow Streak on the back in passing to hurl the hero away from the birds mobbing him.

Now it's just Horizon facing seven angry ancestors of birds, which flap furiously after him.

Horizon runs for it. One of the dinosaurs wrenched something earlier and it's slowing him down, but propelling himself forward with gravity pulses is still enough to keep him ahead of the flock long enough to hit the treetops, crouch, and leap skyward in a high arc.

Hopefully he comes out somewhere a little safer than this, and not, say, in front of an oncoming train.

Roofhopping goes well, with no sign of Yellow Streak, though he spies Whipcord lurking around, the other villain seems mainly preoccupied with rebuilding her clothes behind a chimney than looking out for other roofhoppers. So far so good aside from the evil stripper.

Well, as long as she doesn't start trying to take his costume apart, Horizon doesn't much care. It's not like he's a hero, despite all the dinosaur-punching he just did to save Streak's neck.

...oh damn, he probably went flying, didn't he? Whoops. He's probably fine.

Horizon settles down to rest for a little bit, keeping an eye on Whipcord in case she tries anything funny before he moves on.

After kicking back for a while in the decidedly more lukewarm and less nice water, Kiley takes a look around and figures nobody will miss her while Jennifer's otherwise occupied. Might as well take another look at that warmer cave. Checking that nobody's looking and that there's still plenty of time in the outing, she dives under and heads right back for the other pool.

Horizon gets a good view of Whipcord disrobing further, down to nothing as her costume disintegrates, somehow absorbed into her body. Then, after about ten minutes or so of shivering, threads burst out from her skin and wraps her back up again in the full wardrobe.

It seems her power is only over her own hair...

Back at the other pool, Kiley, this time without the encumbrance of a nosy Jennifer, soon approaches the source of the heat. Physically painful enough to eventually kill her, but without radiant force, Kiley's blurring intensifies as the water nears boiling, before she spots the culprit by the heat and the tiny but cherry red glow: A glass mechanism drifting in the water, dimly glowing red from the heat. It's shaped like a heap of stacked donuts and emanating boiling water, causing it to move in an irregular orbit.

Weird.

Horizon develops a quiet coughing fit and turns his head away from the villain while she 'changes.' She hasn't attacked him yet, at least, though that'd probably change if she knew he was there. Best to slip away while she's distracted and go find something less volatile to do.

Kiley quickly concludes this is a science thing, probably tinker science. Were she not alone, she'd announce that out loud and nod sagely. But because she is, and because she has no idea what this thing even is or does besides being really hot, she says nothing, doesn't nod and most of all doesn't touch it or mess with it in any way. If it's heating a pool, that's just swell in her book.

So she turns around and swims back to the heated pool to look for the source of fresh air, instead. If there's a passage big enough for a person, maybe she can make a note of this place as somewhere to go for free time. Beats going to the beach this time of year.

Hopping away and  onwards to Old Harkin, Horizon encounters nothing more exciting than seeing the frozen train resume it's movement at  some point. There's an invisible Special flying somewhere nearby, though whoever it was isn't heading his way, and thus, probably not  a concern.

The fresh air source proves significantly elusive, though Kiley thinks she figured out which end of the cavern leads to air, the poor lighting  and steam meant that all she could see was rock, wet rock, water, steam, shadows and a fishheaded guy with a spear.

The statue, at close examination, seems to be  fairly detailed, down to every scale on it's body and wrinkles on it's rough leather-like clothing, except for where it's feet are fused to the rock.  Either some Special had nothing better to do, or he(it's definitely male on close examination) grew out of the rock.

A poke with a fingertip shows the spear to be still wickedly sharp, which isn't expected from something made of stone.
