Please read this if you have Windows 7 or 8

They've changed Windows 10 to a recommended, automatic update.  If you don't have recommended and automatic updates turned off you'll automatically switch over on next update, which will screw you over if (like me ) your job depends on you having a previous version.

So far this has worked fine for the old win7 system I have.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/01/08/windows_10_upgrade_blocker/

Just setting the 3 Registry keys

Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

Subkey: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx
DWORD value: DisableGwx = 1

Set ReservationsAllowed to 0 in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade

Well considering they're weening off support for not Windows 10 slowly, they probably would prefer to help you fix your broken 10 instead of that outdated 7/8 they probably don't even waste time teaching their techies about anymore  :rolleyes

https://techjourney.net/disable-remove-get-windows-10-upgrade-reservation-notification-system-tray-icon/ has also been useful in getting rid of the nagging upgrade to windows 10 box on the bottom right an in the task manager.

Wow... that's really amazingly asinine, even for M$.

Except that's not actually what's happening. Not that they aren't pushing it harder and trying to get people on a single operating system. Link.

The operating system will not actually install itself unattended; Microsoft says that users will be able to reject the upgrade or reschedule it for a time that's more convenient.

There;s been pictures posted of that claiming otherwise.  It offers update now, or update tonight, unless they've changed again they dont offer an outright refusal, just a put it off for several hours.

The penguin, it calls!  In all seriousness, I DO have a Windows 7 tower now, if nothing else because that's what came with it - but I'll have to relearn crap as I go because I've been 100% Linux for the better part of a decade now on my own PCs (though if I can find the settings list to change 7 to function similar to Unity like what I had at my old job, that'd make things a LOT smoother).

That being said, the little bit I've used 10 seems like a slightly glazed over 7/8 hybrid with a fancy unsupported but relatively fast browser, so a lot like KDE 4 when it first came out (as opposed to now...KDE 4 and 5 I dare say are the most newbie friendly DEs on ANY operating system).

And the registry hack is likely the most robust method for keeping the updater at bay (that and shutting off the automatic updates, as that can also cause a svchost.exe process to run nontop and annihilate processor resources).

I just had the screen appear to me. Here's how it goes:
1-There's a button that lets you pick another hour, up to five days ahead.
2-Just close down the program with the red X button at the corner.

I plan to eventually "update" to Windows 10, but only at the last minute after as much bugs as possible have been polished out.
