Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground
« on: August 10, 2012, 10:22:39 AM »
I just wanted to tell people who don't know about this challenge to go and check it out.  In Iron Chef "contestants will endeavor to create an optimized and flavorful character using a specified D&D 3.5 prestige class as a "Secret Ingredient". The catch is that the secret ingredient is often a terrible prestige class like master of masks. I have seen some people on these boards try to create builds for these classes sometimes but their builds seem to work in spite of the class instead of because of it. Iron chef avoids this problem by having judging categories (power, elegance, originality, and use of SI). I think the quality of winning or close to winning builds are astounding and I have often felt the urge to play the builds. I would put all of the highlights but there are so many builds that rank high that I would be here for a long time. Instead I will link to one of my favorite highlights to give you an idea of the quality of the builds. Here is the winning cancer mage competition entry (created by Akal Saris): Noxus, The immortal plague

Here is a link to the latest iron chef competition: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249542. The other competitions are at the bottom of the introductory post.
Please, call me Count :).

It would be fun if someone would host this kind of thing here... that last one is closed.  I tried to run a homebrew optimization contest, but only got like 2 entries, and it died...

Yea that was unfortunate. I had high hopes for that...

That is going to put a lot of people off and you are not likley to get many entries anyway. Just saying don't get too invested.

Meh, If it dies it dies. I just copy-pasted the GiTP one, modified it a bit, and changed the secret ingredient. I doubt I'm going to even get one applicant, as the source book is ridiculously obscure. The class itself is a REALLY good monk fix though. Full BaB, 10ft reach on melee attacks, the ability to AoO people who attack you, class level to spot/listen, the ability to CHOOSE your good save, and enchanted fists, all in the first few levels.

How often are those held, usually?

As for holding our own, that may or may not work. We'll just have to try and see.

They usually start immediately after the last one so at any time you go on gitp there is probably an iron chef going on.

I can't find the list of builds for the competitions. Is there an easy way to see them side by side? A post with spoilers or a seperate thread perhaps? I can't find them >_<
I appreciate the logical, cool-headed responses and the lack of profanity displayed by our community.

There are about one quarter of the competitions that have the builds with their creators listed in the first post. This is due to different chairmans for the competitions. Sorry :( (I'l see if I can pm the chairman's who weren't banned and get them to edit their posts).
