D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Deathless + Beastland Ferocity = Immortality?
« on: August 30, 2016, 05:10:18 PM »
Hey guys,
So I'm playing a Pathfinder-only game. Is there a Pathfinder equivalent, preferably a spell, of Beastland Ferocity? Something that lets you ignore the dying condition or remain conscious while dying? Pathfinder has a fun spell, Deathless, which temporarily removes the bottom limit of your hit points, which could make for a fun combination. Thanks for the help.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Good class for 6 good stats? (in Pathfinder)
« on: August 24, 2016, 08:52:36 PM »
Specifically my stats are:

15
12
13
15
18
15

with +1 for level and +2 for racial at my discretion. Obviously some stats are better than others, so the question is really, "What class should I take where dumping anything is a bad idea, where all the abilities are useful for the features?" I now the essence of min-maxing is to avoid a situation like this altogether, but I enjoy a challenge. So when I say "good" class, I mean which class is most appropriate, even if in terms of trying to make broken or cheesy character's it's crap.

Thanks for the help guys!

Gaming Advice / Speed reduction
« on: February 11, 2015, 06:56:42 PM »
Hey Min-Maxers, I'm looking for all the effects in 3rd edition or Pathfinder that slow an enemy or where an enemy's speed is reduced. Thanks for the help!

So far, I've got:

MIC p64 Crystal of Energy Assault Greater [Cold Assault]: Speed is reduced by 10 ft to a minimum of 5 ft.
APG p128 Hobbling Attack: Skirmisher trick where speed is reduced by half for 1d4 rounds.

Gaming Advice / Item Crafting Rules Interpretation
« on: July 16, 2014, 06:41:01 PM »
Hello All,
For once I'm not asking for a specific rule or reference, because I know what the rule is, but it's incredibly vague. Please post your opinions (and arguments) on how the following rule should be interpreted:

"Multiple Similar Abilities: For items with multiple similar abilities that don't take up space on a character's body, use the following formula: Calculate the price of the single most costly ability, then add 75% of the value of the next most costly ability, plus 1/2 the value of any other abilities."

There's only one place where this rule is "clarified," and that's a Rules of the Game article:

"An item with multiple similar abilities costs much less than an item with multiple different abilities, so what's the difference? In this case, "similar" abilities are functions that draw from the same pool of charges, or that can't be used at the same time (or at least don't provide a great deal of extra benefit if they are used together), or all of the above. Sometimes, an item has powers that receive this similar abilities price reduction when the item's multiple powers work together to produce an overall effect, or when an item's powers must be activated separately, but that's fairly rare."

Skip Williams goes on to give the example of staffs, which obviously conform to the 100%, 75%, 50% rule. But we already know how staffs are priced. What I want to know is, if you were the DM of a game with an item crafter PC, what items would you discount for him (besides staffs) based on this rule? I can't really think of anything. Everything seems to me to qualify for the writer's definition of "different" (which can be found in the context of those references) rather than "similar."

Most particularly, I want to know what you think of the line "Sometimes, an item has powers that receive this similar abilities price reduction when the item's multiple powers work together to produce an overall effect." This is so subjective, it could apply to a heap of things. What would your interpretation as a DM be? Simply ignore that line?

Gaming Advice / Town Size and GP Limit
« on: July 07, 2014, 06:08:42 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm looking for something that lets a character treat a town as a larger size category for the purpose of its GP limit and purchasing items. Awhile ago I thought I found more than one option, but all I've found is Resourceful Buyer (and yes I know it doesn't stack, don't worry about that). Wanderer's Diplomacy is not what I'm looking for btw. What I'm looking for might be a feat, spell, class, idr. Thanks for the help guys!

OOC / Availability
« on: April 04, 2014, 07:53:04 PM »
Hey everyone,
So I find it's convenient for everyone to know the group's availability, that way we can make the most of when we post. If you want, post a rough picture of your availability here, that way we know what to expect.

Rules / Posting
« on: April 01, 2014, 06:59:18 AM »
In this thread I will discuss the formatting we will follow for this PbP game. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them below.

I will require at least one responding post from every player as I want you to choose which text color will be associated with your character. Character speech will not only be in quotations, but will also be colored, like "red" for NPC speech. Character thoughts will also be colored and italicized, like so. This will make distinguishing characters easier. Narration of character actions will be left black. If you want to say something OOC that should accompany your gameplay post rather than go in the OOC subforum, please stay in character by confining such text to spoiler buttons.
(click to show/hide)
Otherwise, OOC chatter should go in a thread in the respective subforum. The gameplay subforum should be reserved for, you guessed it, gameplay. For those who don't know, the spoiler button is the one that looks like a hill with some clouds. All of the formatting options I've mentioned can be used by first highlighting the relevant text and then hitting the respective button.

We will not be using Min/Max Boards's die roller as Roll20 has an excellent one we will be using instead. Even if your die roll has nothing to do with a map, please be sure simply to log it in Roll20 to remain consistent. If your character needs to make indirect, tactical movements on the map, you can show which squares he has passed through by drawing a line of the color you chose for your character. The DM will delete this after he's seen it, but if you need to draw another line before the DM has gotten around to it, label the second line "2" the third "3" and so on. The line tool is accessed by clicking on the paintbrush icon. Of course, relying on Roll20 for die rolls and maps as we are necessitates that all the players have an account. If you don't already, free full membership can be acquired here: https://app.roll20.net/account/create. Once you are a member, navigate to this URL so that you can join the Kingmaker game: https://app.roll20.net/join/361170/hfLzLQ.

You may also want to get an account at Myth Weavers, as they provide excellent character sheets that practically fill themselves in. Free full membership can be acquired here: www.myth-weavers.com/register.php. If you don't have or get an account at Myth Weavers, I highly advise that you fill out a full character sheet to make sure you haven't missed anything. I have a free fillable pdf form that is excellent. Let me know if you want a copy. Either way, your character sheet or a link to your character sheet should be posted in your individual thread in the Character Sheets subforum.

The only two remaining subforums will be filled by the DM to be used as references for the players. Copies of the maps used on Roll20 will be found in the Maps subforums, but will not be the maps we actively use. Pretty much everything else will end up in the General Knowledge subforum. Finally, ...

Some Good Rules of Thumb
1. Ask questions of nobody in particular.
The main death of PbP is a bottleneck and resulting lack of interest caused by one player who stops posting. Don't make the game more vulnerable to this problem. As much as possible, ask questions of the group rather than one particular person. Otherwise, the narrative has to wait for that person to respond. Understandably, this can't always be helped.

2. State contingent actions.
If your action is dependent on something else, state what your contingent action(s) will be, if practical. This is a good use of the spoiler button. You'll probably find yourself most often in this position when your actions depend on an NPC's (the DM's) actions. I'm sure he'll appreciate you streamlining the process, so go ahead and post contingent reactions.

3. Within reason, narrate party actions.
Instead of four people saying the same thing or four people waiting for each other to say it for them, try narrating mundane or expected party actions. For instance, if your party enters a tavern, it is not unreasonable when you're posting to narrate that your entire party walks up to the bar, even though you're only supposed to control your own character. Another example would be a situation where the party is voting on a course of action, and you're the last person to post your vote. If your vote confirms a unanimous choice, then go ahead and narrate the party's course of action. If you're not sure whether party narration is appropriate in a given situation, then don't bother. In any event, each player has the final say in what their character does and the DM always has the right to retcon and the ability to modify posts, so any contradictory narration need not be permanent. That being said, if you disagree with any narration for your character, you have to say so in the immediately subsequent post. If you don't the assumption is that you're OK with the narration and any consequences it might entail.

Character Sheets / Vian
« on: March 28, 2014, 04:10:09 AM »
Ok, sorry about the wait, but here's my guy. Vian's the name, mounted archery's the game.

http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=833987

In the past I've posted character backgrounds, but now I realize that might somewhat encourage metagaming. I think it would be more fun for the characters to naturally learn of one another's backgrounds. So only the DM knows my character background. That being said, we might want to have cooperative backgrounds, so if the DM finds some common thread that he would like to weave together, then I'm all for it. It beats meeting in a bar.

Anyways, linklord231, I have applied the oft-OP Unseelie Fey template to my character. However, not to worry, it hardly gets me anything. I really just wanted it for the Charm the Arrow feat, which isn't even that good with my charisma 17. I mainly like the flavor. For that template there are two sets of traits where you can roll dice to randomly select or intentionally select a racial feature. I have intentionally selected the result that grants no feature for both of these. So I don't have wings of any sort, nor do I have special senses. For the trait set that you have to choose from, I have not chose the winter one, which is absurdly powerful in the wrong hands. I have chosen the spring one, which is situational and not very powerful. With this I get Iron Vulnerability, which at low levels is no laughing matter. So I hope you'll approve this +0 LA template (it's in the Dragon Magazine Compendium, if you didn't know). You may be wondering about the alignment description, but as Savage Species clarifies, an align description that says "always of X alignment" means virtually always. In some rare and extenuating circumstances, deviations from this can happen. I think my character background provides a moving reason for his change in alignment, but let me know if you disagree.

I'm a part of the Medvyed family, because that fits in perfectly with the flavor. I also have the Unseelie Fey Noble Kelir bonus feat, again mainly for flavor rather than substantial benefit. In reality, my character wouldn't want to have anything to do with evil, wintry fey as a rule.

Gaming Advice / AoO from Trample Feat
« on: March 27, 2014, 09:11:34 PM »
I have a fighter who has the Mounted Combat and Trample feats (from Pathfinder, IDK if that makes a difference) and a horse.

Do you guys know what options the trampled character has for AoO? Obviously, if he doesn't want to, he doesn't have to. But if he wants to take the AoO, does he get to choose between horse and rider? Or is he forced to attack one rather than the other? Please give citations. If Pathfinder rules don't clarify, I'm sure third editions ones would do.

Play By Post / One-on-One Deicide/Apotheosis Adventure
« on: March 16, 2014, 05:57:10 AM »
Hello MinMaxers,
I'm looking for a player in a one-on-one epic Forgotten Realms adventure to kill Shar. This adventure will serve as a prelude to a group campaign (which the person can join later if s/he wants). Though this game will be in the FR, I will be using Pathfinder rules. However, no material specific to a campaign besides the FR is allowed. 3.0 and 3.5 material is allowed after it has been converted to 3.P.

The parameters for your character background are:
1. The PC must want to steal the elements of Shar's portfolio relating to shadows and annihilation by killing her. (Otherwise there won't be an adventure, lol. I don't care how this point is satisfied. You could want vengeance on Shar for some reason, and once you've killed her, you don't mind snatching said portfolio elements. Or your motivations might be to steal said portfolio elements, and killing Shar just happens to be the best way to go about it. This doesn't even have to be premeditated or particular to Shar, you could simply be a good-aligned character who sees the diminution of the power of evil, Shar's or otherwise, as a good thing. I suppose in theory you could build a character who would instead allow an NPC to take said elements of Shar's portfolio, but I'm guessing that won't be a popular option. You don't have to be evil to take these portfolio elements btw; they can be mysteriously transformed when you ascend.)

2. IF your character is motivated to kill Shar through premeditation... (Skip if otherwise)
A. The circumstances of the adventure necessitate that you begin to put your plan into motion before the time is ripe. (In the narrative you will be asked, probably by Elminster, to kill Shar earlier than you would've liked, Tarsakh 1385 DR, and you can see that you must act now or the consequences could be disastrous...)
B. Your character must have confined him/herself to the city of Sigil from roughly the time premeditation began to the present. (This is necessary to explain how Shar, the goddess of secrets, did not see your plan to kill her and kill you first while you were still weak).

3. The PC must not want to kill Mystra. (Nuff said.)

It should be noted that there are two different directions I can see character builds going for this adventure: nonspellcasters and spellcasters (specifically the sort that could cast epic spells). If you're a nonspellcaster, then some god (probably Mystra) will be your divine patron, enabling you to kill a god and steal elements of their portfolio (normally only possible for a deity). This patron will also mysteriously grant you immunity to Shar's annihilating strike (without which she would be too challenging).

If you are an epic spellcaster, you have a different option (though you don't have to take it). In game, your character (OOC me) can craft the Deicide spell that accomplishes the above. In fact, the Deicide spell, as the name suggests, even kills the deity. But it takes 10 rounds to do so, during which the deity knows exactly where you are and how to get to you, so it really is just a game of survival. I'm providing this second option because it allows the PC to shine a bit more, but I'm allowing the first option because not everyone wants to play spellcasters.

Concerning builds, the characters are ECL 60, 32-point buy, 2 flaws and traits allowed. MinMaxing is encouraged, however, I still don't like shoddy rules interpretation. And I really don't care for lack of creativity, either in the build or background. No homebrew or third party.  All your characters will have or be given the particulars of Shar's character sheet, in game terms, as seen in FP, but will also know that is only an educated guess about her actual powers.

I would like initial character concepts which we can discuss. As we go along, I'll thin the herd. If we have a number of really good contenders left, then I may ask everyone to come up with builds I can choose from.

Gaming Advice / Vampiric-like weapon ability
« on: February 05, 2014, 02:53:13 AM »
Hey guys,
I was hoping someone could remind me where to find a weapon special ability. I'm pretty sure it was +3 and I think it was a sidebar in a 3.0 book. It healed the wielder 50% of all the damage it dealt. I don't think it was called vampiric, but maybe it was something like life-leech or feeding? IDK. Thanks for the help.

Gaming Advice / Senses spell
« on: January 30, 2014, 04:26:18 PM »
Hey guys,
I was hoping you could help me remember a spell. I seem to recall a spell that allowed you to pick one of the senses of a target creature, say hearing or smell, and you would be able to sense what they were sensing with it. Does anyone know the name of that spell?

Gaming Advice / Some teleportation spell...
« on: January 24, 2014, 03:24:58 AM »
Trying to remember. Isn't there a spell that uses an item as a focus. Then you can give that item to someone, and you can teleport to them wherever they are? Thanks for the help guys.

Gaming Advice / Soul theft
« on: October 19, 2013, 10:17:45 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm wondering what ways there are to destroy or imprison a soul. I'm mostly thinking of preventing resurrection after death, but I'm interested in any related abilities.

The ones I can think of off the top of my head are:

Thinaun weapon special material
Devourer monster

Gaming Advice / Alternate material planes
« on: October 12, 2013, 08:47:08 AM »
Hey guys,
This is not really an optimizing question, but a question from the perspective of a DM - hopefully you can help me on it anyways. I seem to remember some demiplane or structure or vehicle that sort of randomly traveled to different material planes and times. I think it was either on or used the Plane of Shadow. May have been an artifact of Shar. I just need the name for it. I realize this isn't much to go on, so thanks for whatever help you can provide.

Gaming Advice / Helping allies spot
« on: September 09, 2013, 03:00:54 AM »
I seem to remember reading some rules on how to deal with allies helping each other find concealed enemies. I'm not sure if it was a Rules of the Game or magazine article or in one of the books. If someone could give me a reference, I'd greatly appreciate it. Specifically, I'm wondering what benefits a character who sees a concealed enemy can give to an ally who doesn't see the enemy.

Gaming Advice / +0 LA Acid Resistance
« on: August 21, 2013, 08:15:23 AM »
Ok, so I'm looking for acid resistance that doesn't come from a magic item, spell, or spell-like ability. I'm building a forsaker (MotW) with acid resistance. Presumably the only option is racial resistance, but I don't want a LA. Thanks for the help guys.

Gaming Advice / Vulnerable Minds
« on: July 23, 2013, 02:16:04 AM »
Are there any constructs with vulnerable minds who also have rules for creation? While most living constructs have vulnerable minds (can be affected by mind-affecting effects), they also all as far as I can tell don't have rules for creation.

I'm trying to use something like magic jar, mind switch, or true mind switch on a construct that I've built. I thought greater humanoid essence would help me, but that only makes a construct vulnerable to "humanoid only" effects.

Gaming Advice / Spell to Power
« on: July 21, 2013, 09:29:38 PM »
I'm just wondering, by a strict interpretation of the Spell to Power ACF, am I not right in saying that 9th level spells can never be learned? The reason I say this is learning by repertoire or power stone is only possible if the erudite who assembled that repertoire or made that power stone in the first place had added that spell to his repertoire via the Expanded Knowledge feat. And that feat specifies that you can only learn a power one level lower than your maximum.

I guess the follow up question is, is there any way to manifest a 10th level power? Any psionic version of the Improved Spell Capacity feat?

Illithid-Apocalypse / Brainstorming

Hey Tyson, I don't know if you want to subdivide this forum very much, so for now I'm just making one thread for all our brainstorming. I don't think we'll do so much that we need more than one thread. Anyways, just wanted to get the ball rolling, I'll probably post some stuff later.
