He strolled back up to the town, trying to find anyone who looked official. The healer and the Captain were busy, but the group was healing up and conversing still. "Can any of you read auras?"

Rabbit was about to be led to a much-anticipated encounter with actual water when Kong returned. The Space Pirate turned Galactic Explorer seemed to concentrate for a moment, his helmet still off but the visor that covered his left eye(s) still worked away. After a moment, he relaxed, and nodded. "Yes."

"You have a courageous streak that none would deny, though you strike as somewhat impulsive. Given your love of aggressive behavior, confrontation, and demonstrations of physical prowess, combined with your seemingly spontaneous outlook on life and hints of a competitive nature, you read as an Aries."

He paused, "Unless you meant that glaive. In which case I have equipment that can detect the unusual emenations and wavelengths of arcanum radiation, but the equipment will need to be specifically rendered, and will have to wait until morning to do so."

"I trust either of these was the answer you sought, Kong."

Kong's face did not move, though his eyes blinked twice in slight confusion. "I do not know of these Aries warriors you speak of. They must be entertaining."

Then with a smile (or as close to a smile as Kong ever had, in which the line of his mouth vaguely bends in a subtly upward leaning, not anymore  quite horizontal way), "Yes, the glaive interests me. In your own time."
I'm here and ready to keep confusing the hell out of everyone I meet.

As the healer worked his magic, Pha tried to look away from the rod to avoid giving the impression that she would covet such a convenient tool.
It wasn't something she was particularly well versed in, having lived up a pretty secluded life up until now and, to be honest, it was a little shaming for a Great Fairy to know so little of the ways of sorcery. Unfortunately for her kin they would have to put up with her lack of deep wisdom and infinite knowledge; she was just too lazy intellectually, had little patience for learning and had little to no curiosity. Hopefully she would never be chosen to become a sage.

Being surrounded by so many people and being drowned in their cacophony gave a strange feeling of vertigo. She was glad they had been saved, sure, but it made her realize that she didn't really like to be in those civilized towns.
Compared to the rare audience she would give at her fountain, this was just too much. Too much.
To make it easier to deal with, she just answered "Yes." to every question without really listening. It was time to go.

She answered the captain's question.
"No. Let's go. We're all patched up now so we might as well leave space for those that need it."
Pha gestured the rescued sailors to come forth as she rose and made for the exit.

As enticing as an actual soak in actual water sounded at the moment, it seemed that folks were interested in that chest, and to be fair... so was he.

He gave the guard who was asked to guide him to the bathhouse a tap on the shoulder. "I should first tend to whatever is on that ship. Thank you in any case."

Besides, the port had plenty of water to soak in, at least for a moment. He returned to the group, and gave them a nod. "Personal amenities can always wait. We really should investigate that chest together." He brought a hand up to the device he wore on his head, and pressed against the side of it, where his ear would be, if he were anything like a human. "Excuse me for a moment."

"System. Create two active events. Event primary, prep for power suit deres. Event secondary prep for re-res and modular reconfiguration. Expected downtime eight hexmarks. Run diagnostic and heuristics. Authenticate Nine Seven Malak. Initialize and await execution."

Active Event created: Primary activation. Event ID 23589
Deresolution of Power Armor system - Event created. Awaiting execution

Active Event created: Secondary activation. Event ID 23590
Reconfiguration of Modular Expansion system - Event created. Awaiting execution

Heuristic Algorithm Comparison (Full System) - Event created. Awaiting execution

He removed his hand from the display's side, then rejoins the others.

Jeremy sends his Pokémon back into their orbs, then smiles at the others.  "We're in this together, I'll come too."

Despite his smiles, Jeremy is in fact very sad.  This is the first time that he and his friends have ever had to kill someone.  Back home his fights were always ended with knocking the other guys unconscious, although Jeremy has seen some vicious battles involving Team Rocket that ended with people dying.  He just doesn't want to be alone right now.

Kurt was content to merely follow in silence, as anything that needed said would be said by those who could say it better.

The little blue puff-ball constantly looking between each of the others.

"I'm not interested in the Army.  I think I could enjoy the sailing life... what do you think?"
"I tried to sail once, but I couldn't hold my breath for long enough for the sail to carry me very far."

For his part, he is quite willing to assist in checking out the ship.

"I'm Zax.  I, uh... good fighting, everyone.  That guy was tough, huh?  So... we fight well together.  And we just got a ship."

"So it would seem. The laws of conquest and bounty seem to be universal." Rabbit said with a chuckle. It seemed you could take the sentient out of the Pirates, but you could never take the Pirate out of the sentient... even WITH Science Division's best surgeons.

Quote
Zax is clearly not used to speaking with others.  He looks around uncertainly, then notices the captain taking charge and his mood sours.  "I'm not interested in the Army.  I think I could enjoy the sailing life... what do you think?"

"I am something of a traveller myself. I've seen a myriad of wondrous places and logged thousands of hexmarks worth of log entries on the sentients and non sentients I've encountered. My discovery of this place was, as it is known, a gravity assisted mistake."

He paused, "I also do not know if my joining an Army would be permissive under my release program with the GF." he mused.

"I understand if my ways are different from yours. We are cultures, literally, worlds apart."

A traveler from distant lands? As long as your intentions are good, and so far you've proven that they are, any diference in our ways can be worked on. Now, let us go togheter to finish investigating that ship's contents.

You exit the hall with the captain and some soldiers, still hearing some cheers and thanks from those inside as you walk back to the docks. On the way a panting guard quickly aproaches you, carrying a small pouch:

Captain, when disarming the pirates we found those! I tought you would be interested.

Thank you soldier, now go and take a rest. You've deserved it.-replies the captain, acepting the pouch.

As the guard walks away, not in an hurry anymore, the captain deposits the pouch's contents in his hand. You can see they consist of three small saphires, each crudely cut into a large cabonchon and a small flint arrowhead on their centers. He clenches his fist in anger over them.

Crystals of arrow deflection... Of third rate quality, but still enough to throw off some of our aims. So the rumors are true, the pirates are now even able to afford magic items for their rank and file. Somebody or something has to be supplying them this items... Well, that can wait, first we must still check the ship.

A small boat that had been used in one of the barricades now awaits you in the water just after Pha's ice plataform. Several small children converged out of nowhere, clearly fascinated with the strange substance, while worried mothers move just behind them, warning for them to take care. The dead bodies and wounded pirates seem to have been moved somewhere else, altough blood stains are still visible in several places.

A few oar turns for those of you who can't fly and you're climbing the side of the pirate ship. The ship seems to have emerged largely unschated from the batle besides a few planks covered in frost and some splintered wood from grazing bombard shots. Even the wrecked catapults seem like they could be repaired with some hard work.

Descending the stairs onto the lower deck, you see several hanging beds, piles of empty bottles and food remains and some walled rooms on the back. The center room has a large door and a massive bed inside with luxurious silk sheets and carpets on the floor, the other two walled rooms contain normal sized beds and much more humble materials.

Finally in the holds you see several crates and barrels filled with a variety of basic supplies, plus chains on the walls where suposedly the prisioners were kept not long ago. At the back, a locked black  wood chest reinforced with plates and heavy chains wrapped around it, nailed to the ground.

I don't supose any of you is a specialist in opening this kind of thing? We could always simply smash it until it breaks, but that may damage more fragile items inside. A good, quick, single blow may also do the trick with minimal risk however...

"I can smash it fast, but not gently..." Kong was interested, and knew he could sever those chains, even cleave the box in half, one swing or less. But the idea that he might damage something more fragile inside kept him from immediately doing so.

"Pirates find their own funding, operate through intermediaries, and obtain what they need to endure and conquer. The fact that these pirates are so equipped should not surprise you." Rabbit offered in confidence, quietly. The rest of the trip he was silent. He could probably leap to that ship from here, climb up the side, clai....

No. He'd wait. This wasn't *HIS* ship. It was *THEIR* ship. When they got to the Deck, Rabbit was a little lost in thought. No atmosphere processor, no recyclotron units. Coil assemblies? Vigilance turrets? Dropship docks?

Even by Federation standards, this ship needed work. The catapult was a nice touch though. Down into the deck they went, and upon spying the luxury the captain lived in, compared to the squabble the rest of the crew lived in, Rabbit had to laugh. "A Pirate is a Pirate, no matter where you go." though, that made him think. If there was a fledgling pirate presence here on this planet, crude though it may be... was there a crude version of High Command in effect here. Were the pirates here truly being led by one organizing force...

Chains. These he could deal with. "These aren't the normal sort of lock that I'm familiar with. But I may have a key that could work." he again pressed a hand against the visor mount on his head. "System. Weapon activate. SG-54 Solaron Blaster."

A click was heard from the holster on his hip. Or at least, where his hip would be were he not a fish-like monster from the stars, and then the armor over that holster moved and extended the weapon he was using before. A simple enough design, but effective enough. "Pha Eris, can you chill the chains at that target point as cold as possible for you? Once chilled and semi-brittle, the high energy particles combined with an endemic field radia..." he stopped himself, "This should burn through them." and tapped his visor again, "System. File reference. Humorous responses, random result."

His visor's display flashed a response, and Rabbit took a position to the side of the chest, aiming at the chains so that if he missed (He'd never live it down) he wouldn't accidentally hit the chest itself.

"Don't worry. I'm a much better aim at things that don't move."

Pha considered the idea as she looked at the chest's bindings, twitching her mouth.
"Okay."

He was the smart guy. She imagined that the process would work if only because he held some strange energy weapon with mysterious possibilities.
She drew a deep breath, held it in for a second as she stood over the chest and exhaled down at it. The cold energy washed over the chest, chasing all warmth from it, then quickly stepped off before Rabbit would fire, eyes big with expectation.

Kurt has been following like a little puppy, but suddenly looks worried.
"When I was training at Camp, we learned that many people guarded important things with different types of protections, or even mixed hurty-things into good things."

"Is this not a problem in this land?"

Once they're frozen by Pha, it is quite easy for Rabbit to cut the heavy chains with his blaster. Once they're out of the way, Rabbit melts the lock and the chest can be finally opened.

Inside, the first item to catch your eye is a delicate chain shirt, with leaves and flowers carvings on every single metal link carved with minuncious detail.

The second item is a large, worn-out looking book with gold straps holding it shut and the symbol of a globe on its cover.

The third item is a black leather belt with a single blood-red carbuncle shaped like a fist.

The fourth item is a silver brooch shaped like a sun and with a small golden angel in the center.

The fifth is a piece of natural amber attached to a bronze chain. Inside the amber, there's a beetle, which seems to twist as soon as you look away from it.

At the bottom of the chest lay several brilliant coins and some vials with liquids of diferent colors. And inside a small white cotton pouch buried under everything else, the God of the Dead's currency.

Pha leaned over the chest slowly, peering within with wide eyes.
Quickly turned around, wondering where the music came from, then back into the chest.

Most of what she saw didn't really fit her style and it took her a moment to figure out what her pick would be, if any.
In the end she plunged a hand into it to pick up the silver brooch and admired it from up close.
"That one's kinda cute."

A thin layer of frost covered it as she rubbed her hands against the metal, unsure if she should put it on.
With no further words, she glanced up expectantly at the others with a short smile, as if she was asking if they were fine with it.

Jeremy looks at the items.  "These are probably items of power, we should find out what they do before choosing who gets what."  He smiles at Pha. "It is cute, but what would you really want it if it made you better at shooting things with a bow?  I bet one of these is perfect for you, we just need to find out which one!"

That made her chuckle.
"Maybe so."

She gave a last glance at the brooch and put it back into the chest.
Scratched her cheek.
"Forgot I already have one anyways."

It could be that the chainshirt was too heavy even for her and she doubted it fitter her abilities more than what she already wore.
Books bored her and the belt's fist-shaped gem gave her a feeling that it was probably something a strong man would want. It was a symbol of physical might or great will, or determination, maybe. The red of the ruby had a bloody feel to it. She already had a necklace so the other two choices were a gamble. Coins were always a sound investment, she thought.
She knew of ancient Great Fairy queens who'd ask for nothing less than rupees and had their fountains ankle deep with the stuff.
"I could have the coins. That's always perfect for me."

A belt with a fist. It was hard for Kong to pass the idea up. He had a belt, and it was very useful to him; had he not worn it, he might not have survived the battle. But this was a new place; these could be new and useful tools. "Rabbit, you say you can analyze things once your tools are set. These too?"

"Shiny"
Kurt replies.
"but it looks like to know any more about it all, we'll have to wait for Rabbit to be able to figure it all out. I wish I could help, since we do seem to be depending on you quite a bit for this stuff, but I am very grateful to have someone as smart as you around."

The last bit having been said directly to Rabbit, of course.
