Beyond the standard core spells offered in the Pathfinder PHB, which spells from the various Paizo splatbooks/sourcebooks and large hardcovers (UM, UC, ARG, etc.) are worth consideration as high-performance, upper-tier spells? While posting some of the more broken & controversial spells (like Blood Money) are certainly welcome, I'd prefer you emphasize talking about high-performers that are useable right out of the gate. Also, please expound on Your tactical analysis of a given posted spell. Just in case there are nuances we may not be aware of.

so in essence! this thread is really more so about finding diamonds in the rough amongst these non-core spells.

*******

If any of you would like, we can also branch out to include some of the more reputable or popular 3PP Pathfinder magic tomes as well (Deep Magic, 1001 Spells, etc.). As it seems that, on the whole, PF's 3PP sources are more balanced and quality-controlled than 3.5's 3PP sources.

The 6th level Bard spell, Snowsong, from the Frostburn sourcebook .... is a terrific multi-purpose utility, buff, offense, defense and healing combo-spell for the entire party.  And at 10 minutes/level, that's pretty much all day long for you, if you do desire.

Beyond that, you should look at a lot of the higher-level (4th, 5th and 6th level) Bard-only spells, too.

Thank you, Keldar (I voted up your post).  There's some good resources in your list.

I realize that stealthing around in PF is a little more complicated due to the high Perceptions scores of nearly every single creature.  That's why I'm looking for as many cost-effective edges I can find .... while still being able to do my expected "other" duties as the party wizard.

Min/Max 3.x / [PF] Stealth Wizard Buildcrafting .... Need Help!
« on: May 18, 2015, 10:28:43 PM »
For the first time, I'll be playing in a pure Pathfinder Rules Only Campaign (no 3.5 stuff allowed).  My 12th level Foresight Diviner Wizard (with Forewarned, Prescience & Foretell) is going to the party's only arcane spellcaster.  So I'll be doing standard debuffing and BC work for the group (a ranger, inquisitor & cleric).

As a dedicated sub-theme for my wizard, I need to spend at least some of his build resources on "stealth" capability.  As all 4 of us will be needing it in order to survive this Underdark-centered urban campaign (lots of espionage and sneaky commando missions).

So I'm hoping some of you folks can help & recommend to me some magic items, mundane gear, spells, feats/traits and the like for me to look into.  Please note, I'm not looking for a full-throttle investment into stealth capability.  More so a less-resource-intensive or auxiliary investment.  In essence, I'm looking for "stealth on the cheap".  To note, I will be maxing out my Stealth and Perception skills, even though I won't get the bonus +3 for doing so.

So if you can help me find some great "bang for the buck" stealth ideas - I would greatly appreciate it!

P.S.  Any ideas for spells would be best for long-durationed spells so my wizard can hopefully get at least 2 or more of his 4-5 combat-encounters-per-day (which we are expecting) properly covered.

I'm really enjoying this review, Libertad.  Your precise level of detail and crunch/fluff analysis is quite helpful.

I'm personally a big fan of PF 3PP products that emphasize new arcane spells and new monsters.  And I see Path of Shadows has a lot of arcane spells in it.  So if you do review those spells, that will likely be the clincher on determining if I'm gonna get this PDF.

Thanks again!

(P.S.  Respect given on each of your posts)

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Favorite 3rd Party D20 Publisher?
« on: April 15, 2015, 12:57:36 AM »
Kobold Press (Wolfgang Bauer) and Super Genius Games (Owen K.C. Stephens) makes some decent game supplements for Pathfinder.  Quality level is consistently high ... creative alternative game mechanics that are balanced ... I haven't had a thumbs down on any of their supplements yet.

I backport (after some small modifications) PF-only stuff back to 3.5.  So this information may be irrelevant to you.

Min/Max 3.x / Re: Urban Tracking: Is this worth anything at all?
« on: April 13, 2015, 11:03:07 PM »
Another way to get Tracking is to have a Rat (who has Scent) as your wizard familiar ... and Psychic Reformation 1 of his 2 starting feats out in for the Track feat.

This will allow you to stick with the Spellthief class for all those Master Spellthief shenanigans.

Hey Everyone,

I'm looking for something that is probably quite obscure.  The Incarnum Spellshaping feat (MoI p. 38) gives the bearer exclusive access to a whole new subset of spells - ones that have the descriptor of [Incarnum].  There's not a lot of spells in the MoI book .... so I'm looking for some homebrew [Incarnum] spells from some of the creative folk here at MM.

Perhaps you know where I could find some spells like this?  Or one of you may have some in your files somewhere?

Due to the idiosyncrasies of our campaign world, a sizable number of spellcasters will have this feat.  And I'd like to provide more options for said spellcasters besides the handful that are in MoI.  Thanks for your help!

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Review: The Path of War
« on: September 20, 2014, 02:15:23 PM »
Thanks for the review, Libertad.  I had heard PoW was in process - so it's good to see it out and finalized.

So it seems that:

Stalker = Swordsage
Warder = Warblade

... but Warlord does not equal Crusader.  At least in terms of flavor & fluff.  Seems they both key off CHA, but Warlord doesn't have much of the Crusader's religious angle to it at all.

Your thoughts on this?

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Swiveling the Boreal Wind Clusterf*ck.
« on: September 17, 2014, 02:19:45 PM »
Aha.  I did not see that clause.  Thanks for the pickup.

Still, with 3 Move Actions in a turn (one a converted Standard and the other a Bloodspike Tempo) ... that's some great whirlybird action.

I'll look at your link and try to find some other external/additional/stackable Move Action sources to add to the concept.

Min/Max 3.x / Re: [3.P] Making Wizard Cha dependent
« on: September 17, 2014, 02:15:44 PM »
Nearly all the wizards I've ever played have had decent-to-high CHA.  Reason being, a lot of the spells I like involve CHA Checks (for Charm Person/Monster [or Dream Casting "Charm" if you can't cast Enchantments], Planar Binding series, Command Undead, etc.).  Plus, "Social Wizards" are fun.  And there's a mindboggling array of terrific social skill boosting spells for a wizard in both 3.5 and PF.  Of course, there's the UMD-boosting advantage as well too.  I need to look more at PF traits, but I believe there might be a trait out there that converts all the Knowledge skills to CHA based instead INT based.  Which for a Charisma Wizard like the one you are looking for ... would be all sorts of awesome.

Plus, a wizard who can get maximized benefit with the typically sorceror-dominated spell, Ruin Delver's Fortune, is just tons of ace when it comes to immediate-action defensive goodness.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Swiveling the Boreal Wind Clusterf*ck.
« on: September 17, 2014, 12:16:14 PM »
I wanted to get y'alls feedback on this spellcasting idea.  The Boreal Wind spell, as we all know, is a top-tier multi-threat attack spell for nearly all the primary arcane and divine spellcasters.  One of the more intriguing aspects of this multi-round direction-controllable spell is this quote:

" ... The wind can change direction if you actively direct it (a move action for you); otherwise, it merely blows in the same direction ... "

So if I chose to use my Standard Action as another Move Action in the same round to change direction 5 degrees to the left, could I instead swing it around in the opposite direction (to the right) to, in essence, affect everything around me within a 360 degree AoE? I couldn't find any rules that mandated that I had to adjust a spell's moveable direction in the quickest and shortest path possible.

In addition, let's say I downed 12 Bloodspike Tempos [MoE p. 140] prior to the combat.  If I took those extra 12 Move Action turns all on the first turn that I cast the spell, could I affect the same damaged victim multiple times with the same Boreal Wind?  Assuming the victim was in the initial blast, then was out of it (when the Boreal Wind changed directions), then was back in it again (when a Bloodspike Tempo Move Action moved the Boreal Wind's gust back in the victim's direction.  Assuming in my prior paragraph that I have no restrictions with longer-route swivelling, I can just use Move Actions to swiftly move across the battlefield, swivelling the Boreal Wind in circles or hemisphere sweeps ... and destroying everything that gets multiple touches by the returning/revolving Boreal blasts.  Even stuff that's possibly out of my field of vision.  Of course, caution must be taken to ensure allies won't get caught in this venture.

------------------

In essence, I'm trying to see if I can nova-combo Boreal Wind along with a huge expenditure of Bloodspike Tempos to royally annihilate and blow-back everything on a huge battlefield all within the first turn of my wizard's combat.  To note, Boreal Wind is one of the very few attack spells with Long Range (400 ft. + 40 ft./level).  And its 20'x20'xLong Range AoE is a really compelling strategic-level battlefield spell.  Especially when direction changes point up into the skies to affect flyers.

Anyhow, if this has any legality issues, please kindly holler back.

I would re-jigger the Continuous Spellcasting class ability to work something along the lines of the Swift Concentration skill trick or the Extraordinary Concentration feat for piloting "concentration duration" spells.  At least as a game mechanics conversion tweak for the 3.5 Dwarven Chanter.

Gaming Advice / Re: 3.0 Dwarven Chanter?

I love this PrC.  Years ago, I had a Dwarf Wizard who I played through 15th level that had Dwarven Chanter and multiple PrC dips that basically made him into both a Bard and a Sorceror as well being a full-blown Wizard.

I'd be curious what you are gonna do with this PrC, Kevin.

Min/Max 3.x / Re: Fearmonger
« on: September 05, 2014, 11:30:30 AM »
I've played 2 heavily-optimized and focused fearmonger builds over the years.  And had another 2 or 3 as party-mates as well.

I've always found that the best fearmongering synergy can be had with collaborative buildcrafting with at least one other party member.  In essence, sharing the load while still allowing other optimization angles to be achieved that cover fearmongering's weaknesses.  Throwing the vast majority of your build resources into optimizing this schtick can significantly hamper the versatility of a given build.  But when 2 or 3 characters can contribute to "fear stacking" (ramping up the Shaken/Frighten/Panicked/Cower ladder), you can then allocate other resources to your build to make you equally awesome in other areas.

I was talking with Snow this morning about this thread and she reminded me of another regular.  Mean_Liar.  He wrote the original Monk Optimization Handbook.  It was definitely one of the first CO handbook threads.  And it had an absolute ton of user posts to it over the years.  Mean_Liar, for all his valiant & visionary optimization efforts back in the early 2000s, was always very conscientious to note that he wasn't an evangelist for the 3.0 Monk (and ultimately 3.5 Monk) and always recommended people reconsider other options before going Monk.

I own a ton of PDF supplements through DriveThruRPG and RPGNow (same company now, I think).  But I've not seen such a niche product as Red Dragon Inn with such a high cost to it.   :twitch  I am somewhat interested in it, though.

Libertad, I'd be curious if you think the bang-for-the-buck ratio was worth the purchase.  Especially since it got only 1 lukewarm review.

There is "Bigby's Construction Crew" from AD&D, which has some fan conversions to D20 online.
There was also an AD&D spell from Spelljammer that created a servant horde that was "skilled" in running a ship. I'd have to go digging for the name and if there are any fan conversions about.
I expect that could be modified, as could Construction Crew, to provide any kind of builders.
Samwise, do you have a link to a credible 3.5 conversion of Bigby's Construction Crew?  I used to really love all the 2E "Greyhawk Persona Name" spells (Otto, Bigby, Rary, Tenser, Drawmij, etc.).  I wish even half of them would've been converted to 3.X.  The flavor text for all of them were quite entertaining.

His name was Yekoj.  At the time he wrote the 2 wizard handbooks, 2002??, 3.5 was not out yet and he used all the 3.0 splatbooks and the few F.R. sourcebooks that were out at the time.  Snow Savant and I played some PbEM D&D with him.  Yekoj was smart, inventive and as tactically proficient a player as I'd ever gamed with at the time.

I think he disappeared shortly after writing them.  So the updating process never got to happen - which is a shame, because once 3.5 was published, a torrent of amazing WotC sourcebooks followed that heavily influenced us all.

Regardless, his handbooks (he also had a druid handbook and a bard one too, IIRC) set the standard for modern day 3.5 optimization handbooks.
