Benedict flicks a concerned glance over at Noa. "She really got to you, huh? If it's any consolation, I think she dyes her hair. The roots looked lighter."

He rubs tiredly at his face. "Going after the beacon would be the courteous option. Of course, I can't pilot the ship on courtesy. We've got enough on us to handle the beacon and get back without refueling, right?"

"She reminds me of someone, is all," Noa said. It was. It was hard to let an entire life go.

She looked at Ironfist. "Well, I vote for that distress signal. It sounds like Benedict agrees and River--- well--- so what do you say?"
"You had a tough day at the office. So you come home, make
yourself some dinner, smother your kids, pop in a movie, maybe
have a drink. It's fun, right? Wrong. Don't smother your kids."

"I agree that we should go check out the distress signal, just as long as we aren't late on purpose." Ironfist gives River a pointed look after he speaks.

"If they're alive, we save them. But fuel isn't free, so neither should our services be. We ought to at least break even is all I'm saying. This isn't a Space Hero holovid where the protagonist has limitless funds to help everyone for free." she says. "In any case we seem to agree that the sooner we get there, the better."
Hmm.

"Fair enough. I wouldn't have us trade our livelihoods for their lives. So where is that signal from? What else is in that region? I want to know if we need to worry about feds, pirates, astroids, everything."

Benedict gets up from the table and heads to the cockpit, fiddling with the comm system to check the location of the beacon.

The beacon is still pinging, though the signal seems to be weakening. You've got a lock on the coordinates, though, and the ship's nav system can calculate the effects of any drifting due to residual momentum, gravity, and other forces so you'll still arrive at the right place.

So, are you setting a course?

Benedict locks in a course toward the beacon, bringing the ship around and turning on the auto-pilot before heading back into the mess room.

"We're on our way, but the signal's getting weaker. Probably drifting out of range or losing power."

Benedict punches the appropriate buttons, taps in the coordinates, and sets the crew off in search of the unknown.

What the crew either didn't know or wasn't willing to admit was, they were all about to make a huge mistake.
