Gaming Advice / Re: Help picking one free item of any power for a Rogue?

Whoa at the Silver Key of Portals.

The only situation I can conceive of where it's not the Universal Key but better is if you went by a strict interpretation of "Opens any mundane or magical lock" and decided that the Universal Key was capable of opening a vault of magical goodies sealed by all the power of a god or something.

Given that the DM hasn't mentioned such a vault existing in this setting (because if he had my character would have the search for it as his lifelong quest), I'm going to ask if I can have the Silver Key of Portals.  I was already sure I wanted the Universal Key as a backup unless I found anything cooler, but holding off on picking it because it didn't have any of those nice pluses I enjoy so much.  So a Universal Key that also lets you escape danger, walk through walls, and turn ethereal for three minutes is just way too good to pass up.

I don't know if the GM would allow me to custom create my item in finished form as such, especially if it's something out there.  I do know for a fact that one of the other players asked for and was allowed to purchase items which give odd numbered bonuses to the associated stats.  You know, like a Belt of Giants Strength +1, for the purpose of rounding off odd numbered stats cheaply.

They priced it according to the Item Creation rules, bonus squared times one thousand GP.  So make of that what you will, but I probably won't bother approaching him about it unless the item sounds incredibly cool.  Or at least cooler than a Universal Key.

It does have to exist in one book or another.  I happen to have Underdark as well and I just looked it up.  A magic key with an unspecified form that can open any mundane or magical lock sounds pretty useful.  If I did get it installed into a compartment or something on my Warforged, it would also pretty much get me out of ever having to put ranks in Open Lock, which would be really neat.

I'm definitely not just going to stop looking here, but I'm certainly marking that down as a good option.

Anything else come to mind?  I was looking through the Epic Handbook again earlier to see if any of the items listed within were worth choosing as the one thing, but nothing in particular stood out.

Edit: Oh, also, I can use stuff from Dragon if I can get my hands on a copy of the article or whatnot and the GM approves it.

First, hahahaha... Chandelier of Invocation.  I like that.  I don't know if the local planar cosmology even has Efreeti's for me to summon and abuse though, so it probably wouldn't work.

As for the Universal Key thing, that does sound pretty awesome.  Thing is though, the only limitation I've really seen so far in the campaign that the GM absolutely puts his foot down on is that it has to exist somewhere.  I have to be able to point to it in a book or get a picture of the page it's on if he doesn't have the book.

So, if there does exist a Universal Key somewhere in a published book, then I might go for that.  If it doesn't though, I don't think I'm allowed Homebrew.

Hey all.  I ran into this situation just a few minutes ago in a play by post game I'm applying for.  The GM says that each player can have one item completely unrelated to their wealth by level for purposes of making their character more awesome I guess.  I was thinking low end like "I'll get Elven Slippers or something" for a while, until... one of the other players asked for and received the universes one and only Deck of Many Things.

On a whim I threw out a list of things I was considering suddenly, like The Everfull Purse, The Invulnerable Coat, the Ring of Nine Facets, or a matched pair of Blades of Subtlety.  The GM's response was not the expected "That's just a list of powerful artifacts, pick something more reasonable."  The response was actually "Those sound about right, but no matched pair of blades.  You only get one thing."

I'm playing a Warforged Rogue who styles himself as a Gentleman Thief after his role model, and the setting is such that it's practically a cosmic dumping ground from which nothing can escape once it enters, so there's no limitations on what setting I pick it up from.

There's so many awesome things to think of, but I don't know if I just want to pick something with the most pluses, like a Ring of Total Immunity to All Elemental Damage or whatever it's called from the Epic Handbook so much as I want to find the one perfect thing which would really just make the character.

So... what would you guys pick if you were playing this guy?

You know I was actually really surprised to realize that I didn't already have an account here.  I tried a couple different usernames I've used before and then searched my GMail account before I realized I'd just never had occasion to sign up.

I've always loved the Character Optimization boards around here, I look through them every once in a while for interesting stuff.

Anyway, I play primarily D&D 3.5 and GURPS, though I've also got a game of Pathfinder going on and I like a handful of other systems.  Marvel FASERIP and Paranoia come to mind.

I mostly get my gaming fix on Myth-Weavers these days, because my friends are all busy these days with other stuff, and I'm busy off at college.
