They vary from insects up to the size of cattle.  Most are pretty far out, andd are coming from the same direction NY is in.

That doesn't sound good. New York would be a pretty far flight from here, right? Are they headed toward our town, or just wandering from that general direction?

Either way, Elizabeth warns her lieutenants.

Wandering mostly, and NY would be out of state.

The guards are non-plussed.  They do mention hearing odd things in the night, but that could be their imaginations getting the better of them.

At this point, Elizabeth doesn't see a reason to change the current course of action:
  • Build/maintain defenses.
  • Build/maintain food supplies.
  • Keep up production of gunpowder.
  • Keep a watch around to see what's out there.
  • Accompany hunting parties.
  • Try to outlast the trogs through winter.
  • Check on the prisoner and rotate out the guards so they don't go too crazy.
  • Keep on the lookout for unusual behavior from people.
If she thinks she finds a lone creature, she might try to kill it to investigate it, further. It depends on the situation.

The snow hits early in October.  Kind of unusual, but not too mush so.  Defenses are mostly done at this point, and training is well underway.  Hunters are complaining of odd tracks they cantt identify though, and come dusk one evening a party has not returned...

  • Accompany hunting parties.
Did they go out alone? Elizabeth wanted to accompany them.

If we're assuming Elizabeth was otherwise occupied, she'll want to follow their tracks at first light, with some other people.

You couldn't accompany all of them.  The now will complicate tracking them.  At best you could head in the direction they left and hope to stumble upon them.

That would be best. We'll need a few armed men to come with.

The snow has stopped but the winds are still up.  There's no real tracks, but there are farm houses in the general direction they headed out, so they may have camped there overnight.  The closest is the old Johansson farm.  There is no smoke coming from the chimney as you near the farm.  The men hesitate to go out into the open without knowing whats inside.

I'm assuming the wind is too bad to fly up as a hawk and the snow is too deep to run over as a rat, right?

How dangerous is it to use Open Window to look inside the house from such a near location? I'm assuming it carries the normal risks of being seen and having the window widened? What is the San/Hum cost?

Also, everyone in present company is well aware of Elizabeth's abilities (roughly) at this point, right?

San/Hum depends on teh number of ranks you have.  The main danger would be botching the roll because who knows what would happen.  Also it's likely dark inside, and the window would mostly let you see darkness.  But if theres something on the other side that can come through, it may do so.

How far out is the house from the woods? Is there any cover between here and there (out buildings, sheds, wagons, etc)?

The back of the house has much less forest clearing than the front and sides.  There's plenty of cover via outbuildings (your behind one now) and such.

Elizabeth tells the others: "I'll go up alone. It will be harder to see one person than many. Cover me if anything happens."

Elizabeth approaches from the side with the most cover (probably from the front or sides, where the woods are closer). She wants to see if she can get up to the house (not by any windows) without being noticed.

You don't do a great job concealing  yourself, but the howling winds and snow probably help.  The house has no side windows, so you're approaching from the left.  Listen roll plz

You hear movement, do you have knowledge nature or the d20 equivalent?

Just Physical Sciences, which is probably a stretch. That being said, she can make untrained Knowledge checks for anything DC 10 or lower (so, common knowledge).

Knowledge (Nature) - untrained = 1d20+4
Rolled 1d20+4 : 4 + 4, total 8

Knowledge (Physical Sciences) - if applicable for any reason = 1d20+6
Rolled 1d20+6 : 6 + 6, total 12

Elizabeth draws her gun, and motions for one of the lieutenants to come, if he's with the group.
