holy shit this is my local weatherman

Catching up on the thread, this reminded me of a crazy revelation the other night.  My best friend from high school got 10 years for something similar.  He never struck me as the type to be into kiddie shit, and the case notes are sketchy as all hell.  Given how I had to search for him to dig it up (I hadn't heard from him in a while, and was getting worried he'd had an accident akin to his brother - they both were daredevils and he was my training partner for a decade or more in several martial arts, so entirely plausible he'd made one jump too many he couldn't stick the landing on) and his family and ALL of my other friends that were also friends with him hadn't said a PEEP on social media, I'm really suspicious of how it played out.

Still not sure what to make of it, but wanted to get that off my chest.

If it helps any, there are a surprising number of pedophiles in the world. It's hard to get numbers since self-reporting is extremely rare, but it's estimated to be ~5%

Everyone who plays D&D knows what 5% looks like, it's a 1/20 chance. Paraphilias get weird and disturbing, and western society simultaneously pushes "stranger danger" while also insisting that people with paraphilias are extreme outliers that should be put down for the safety of the rest of society. I'm not saying it should be accepted, but acknowledging the statistical prevalence of a paraphilia aids in accurately addressing it effectively.

Disclaimer because it's almost always necessary when this topic is brought up: I do not endorse any paraphilia that causes harm. Minors/Animals/etc cannot consent or choose what constitutes harm so the broadest definition must be used in order to ensure their safety.

The thing to keep in mind with any borderline kink or fetish, there are folks who live with it, but don't act on it, either only doing things for themselves in private, or having other kinks which they try to associate more with, or even trying to use counseling to break from it.

Unfortunately, even for relatively tame kinks practiced by two consenting adults, people don't get that it's just how their brains are wired, and they end up attaching a moral judgement to it.

Or in so many other words, which are quite possibly wrong, there are perverts out there who give the rest of us a bad name.

There was a 4.7 earthquake tonight a mile from my house. It broke one of my favorite wall decorations and threatened to collapse my entire office (the room actually swayed a bit). I've been up all night not wanting to remove my shoes in case I needed to GTFO.  :shakefist

Other than being under-rested I'm fine. This kind of thing comes with the territory living in California. There's a acceptance of the impending threat of catastrophic earthquakes that is sort of baked into the psyche of anyone who is born here. Unlike most other natural disasters, earthquakes just kind of interrupt your day without warning, so you either pick up the stuff that gets knocked over or evacuate, depending on severity.

I actually felt more stressed about the thieves who broke into a bunch of cars right next to where I was parked outside the local gaming store. They drove up, smashed some car windows, looted, then drove off. My van is a HUGE target for that kind of thing so my blood ran cold watching the security footage.

You know what they call a 3.7 earthquake in NoCal ?

KellK yeah that is about as serious as it gets.
I don't think it's your job to know what to say, when something like this gets plopped into your lap.
It's no surprise your friends were being quiet about it -- reasonable and normal reaction
... but ... this NOT being quiet, is the better thing to do.
