The Path of Chaos - Argos
« on: May 21, 2013, 12:44:51 AM »
As the sun rises over Argos it finds many of the town's inhabitants already bustling.  Today is caravan day, which is the first day of every week.  This is the day that travelers to Norbal depart with an escort of a nuber of the town guard.  Monster attacks are frequent along the dirt road that leads to the Chaos Dungeon; and getting more frequent with each trip.  It is said that some of the guards have refused the duty of late, risking their jobs and a stay in jail in the process.

To the locals, caravan day is the busiest of the week.  While some travelers are capable of paying for room and board the night before the caravan, many of the destitute and desperate wait until caravan day to arrive, so they may instead spend what remains of their coin on supplies, weapons, and armor.  The locals are more than happy to meet the needs of the travelers.  Makeshift market stalls have been erected near the caravan starting point, selling everything from fresh fruit to designer crossbows.

Over the hustle and bustle of the townsfolk an argument can be heard between the town's sheriff and a local.  The man arguing with the sheriff is quite obviously angry at the lawman.  There are a lot of fingers pointed and arms crossed.  Near the two men is a table upon which sits a stack of paper with a rock to hold them down, an ink vial, and a quill.  A small sign posted on the front of the table reads: "Registration".

After a final 'thank you' to Glad, Caerus heads to the gathering.  The sight of the morning sun brightens his mood even as the muddy roads threaten to remind him of the previous night's rain.  Upon reaching the caravan, he peruses the goods for sale and pays a full gold coin for three oranges.  As he carefully places two of the oranges in his sack, he becomes aware of the argument between the stranger and the man he assumes is in charge.

Turning serious for a moment, he looks down at the third piece of fruit and begins to peel it.  Ignoring the knife at his belt, he removes his right glove, tucks it under his arm and uses his fingers instead.  Without lifting his eyes from the fruit, Caerus begins meandering towards the table, and by extension, the arguing pair.  He takes his time peeling the orange in deliberate, small pieces; his paces are equally slow and measured.  Focusing intently on the sound of their voices, he tries to block the sounds caravan and hear only their conversation.

As Caerus meanders through the bustling street, through exclamations such as, "FRESH FISH!" and "SHARPEST SWORDS IN TOWN!" he is able to filter through the din to hear the following:

"...he's been missing for three days, Sheriff, we need to be out looking for him; not escorting the next group of miscreants to their death!"

"I understand your frustration, Josah, and I have ten men out searching the area as we speak.  If your son is out there, he will be found.  Now, if you will excuse me, I need to attend to the caravan."

"I won't forget this, Ward.  The townsfolk know exactly what kind of man you are, placing the needs of outsiders above our own.  I'm taking this straight to the mayor!"

With that, Josah storms off toward the town hall.  Ward watches him go for a moment, closes his eyes, and leans back on the registration table.  Pinching the bridge of his nose, he lets out a sigh before opening his eyes and moving to a seated position in the chair behind the table.

Not wanting to miss his chance to talk to the man, Caerus jogs after Josah.  Falling in stride next to Josah, skipping every couple steps to keep up with his quickened pace, Caerus leans in and asks:

"Pardon me, sir.  Did you say your son was missing?

He pauses to gather his thoughts.

"You know, I'm headed to Norbal this morning.  Perhaps I can be of some help?

Korgan rises from the bed after a restless night of sleep.

Ugh...that wasn't sleep.  Probably better off staying awake through the night.  Let's find this Ward and get some answers to brother's whereabouts.

Still groggy, Korgan gets himself together and stumbles downstairs where he runs into Glad again.  He orders another lager and downs it in three big gulps.  He thanks Glad, pays his tab, and heads out of the inn.

Navigating the bustling streets, he meanders his way to the caravan.  He sees two men in a heated argument and decides to wait a distance away for the argument to end.  Minutes later, the argument ends and he sees one of the men storm off.  Korgan approaches what he believes is the lawman and calls out..

"Ward.  I have a question fer ya."
Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies.

Per his usual routine, Ser Nelio is up just before sunrise, finishing his morning prayers. He carefully packs all his belongings, triple checking everything to make sure he does not forget anything. He make his bed and cleans the room, making sure everything is in the same place as when he entered. Heading downstairs, he thanks Glad for her hospitality and settles the bill.

Heading out, he goes first to the stables to retrieve his war pony, Valiant. He inspects Valiant to make sure he not picked up any fleas or other pests from the the stable. Everything looks satisfactory. Ser Nelio mounts his pony and rides out to the makeshift caravan market.

Arriving at the market, he notices the a lawman arguing with a local. Ser Nelio lets them finish and when they part ways, he approaches the lawman to offer his help.

"Good morning, constable. May I introduce myself, I am Ser Nelio holy warrior of the Grassy Hill of Noh. I too, am a gnome of the law. I couldn't help but notice your heated discussion with the local man earlier. Is there anything I could do to help a fellow peace officer?"

Josah continues his quick pace through the busy streets.  He frowns at hearing Norbal mentioned, and says: "Hmph.  Then you're part of the reason my son's still missin'.  It's you lot wasting our town guard's time with yer carousin' and carryin' on that they don't have time to help those who really need it.  If you truly want to help find my boy, you'll convince that thick-skulled Ward to take the long road through Tomm Swamp and find him.  Otherwise, leave me be."

Meanwhile...

Ward holds a finger up to Korgan to politely ask him to wait a moment for his response.  As he speaks his eyes flick to different facets of your equipment and armor.  Almost as if he were constantly sizing you up for a brawl.  Turning to Ser Nelio, he says, "As I told Josah before he stormed off, I have already sent ten men to Tomm Swamp to search for his boy.  I understand and sympathize with his situation, but my duty to this town includes escorting travelers to Norbal because it keeps the streets clear of beggars and thieves who prey upon our citizens.  I can't send more men out to the middle of a swamp only to return to find that we did not properly defend our citizens from riff-raff."

Turning back to Korgan, he says, "Present company excluded, of course, Master Dwarf.  Are you here to register fo rthe caravan to Norbal?"

"Perhaps I may be of assistance after all, constable. I have participated in several of these types of search and rescue (or recover) missions in the past, though never in a swamp. I'm not much of a tracker myself, but if I could be introduced to a good huntsman, I think together we could track down Josah's boy for you and allow your men to concentrate on their other duties here in town. Do you know if this Tomm Swamp is on the way to Norbal? Do you have a map of the area?"

Caerus ponders the idea carefully, trying to hide the uncertainty in his voice.

"Tomm Swamp, huh?  I don't see any issues with an extra day's travel or two.  And, I know what it's like to have family disappear..."

Maybe that's not quite the same...  He thinks as he continues speaking.

"Okay, sir.  I can do that.  I think I'm pretty competent in the wilderness after all.  But if we find your son, maybe... you can help me out.  Not sure what exactly, but we can, uh... talk about it when I, uh... when I return."

His voice quivers a bit and his heart races but he stands resolute, at least for the moment.  Without waiting for a reply, he concludes.

"Anyway, I'll do what I can."

With that, Caerus spins on his heals and begins to walk briskly back towards the caravan so not to give away his insecurities.  After a dozen or so steps, he lets out a deep breath and gathers his thoughts.

Why did I have to choose those words?  And walking away and showing it on my face are the same... I don't know why I always make that harder than it should be.  Still, he didn't have to be so ornery... He lets out an audible sigh.  I wonder if this is what Father had in mind?

He lets that final question linger in his mind as he walks, calmly now, toward the registration table.

"Riff-raff?" Korgan laughs heartily. "I've been called worse things in my life.  No, I come looking for me brother, a Dwarf Sorcerer.  He came this way a few months back.  Glad said that you might remember him.

"That I do, and I can see the resemblance now that I think on it."  He reaches under the table and pulls out a wooden box with drawers on one side.  Opening the second drawer, he begins rifling through the stack of papers inside and pulls one out.  "Here it is, his registration form.  Everyone on the caravan is required to complete one before journeying to Norbal.  Let's see, yes he journeyed to Norbal seven seeks ago.  Here's his name and all, though my Dwarf is a little rusty and I can't make out the clan name.  He filled out only the name and place of birth, which are the only required entries in case kin such as yourself come looking for them."  He hands you the piece of paper.

Caerus' walk back to the registration table doesn't take long, and as he returns he sees the sheriff engaged in conversation with a Dwarf and a Gnome, both of which Caerus recognizes as patrons of the Steel Staff  from the prior evening.  One, the Dwarf, holds a completed registration form while the Gnome continues his conversation with Ward.  As Caerus approaches the table, he hears the following exchange:

Upon hearing Nelio's words, Ward becomes visibly relieved.  "It's good to see that not all travelers to Norbal are scoundrels.  Your help will be greatly appreciated, Ser."  He moves the contents of the registration table onto the side chair for the moment, and pulls out a scroll case from a pocket inside his cloak.  The scroll case contains a map of the area, which Ward spreads over the table and flattens out.  Pointing to a star on the map, he says, "Here is Argos.  This is the main road to Norbal, running north through the forest until you reach the basin.  Tomm Swamp is East of the main road, and adds a couple days journey to take the longer road.  The caravan can't travel through the swamp, of course, but we can pass through on the road and allow you to embark from a closer position.  From there you can meet up with the men I sent two days ago.  I can pull a couple guards from the caravan to join you since it will be close to the basin at that point.  The only thing I cannot provide, however, is a guide.  Two of the ten men in the swamp were the only men I have who know the area, and the rest of my men are useless in a swamp."

Nelio nods in approval, when he hears Ward's mention of him not being a scoundrel.

"Unfortunately, not all can be as pure of heart as us. With this map and your directions, I am certain I will not let you, Josah, or the town of Argos down. Can you describe what type of hazards I might encounter in the swamp? You say that all travelers on this caravan must register first? When registration has closed, may I examine the roster? I would like to see if any other travelers could offer their skills in assistance with the rescue effort."

Nelio dismounts and begins filling out his own registration form at the table.

Watching Ward's finger traverse the map, and hearing the Gnome, Caerus interjects excitedly.  Still a bit uncomfortable, he doesn't talk to either the sheriff or the Gnome but rather the map.

"Tomm Swamp!?  Hey, are you going look for Josah's son?  I just talked to him.  Josah, that is.  We agreed to swap favors..."

Well I suppose that's one way to interpret the conversation...

Less sure of himself after realizing his unintentional phrasing, Caerus continues as he glances to see if either authority has caught on.

"Anyway, I said I'd help track the boy so can we work together?"

Looking to the Gnome, he asks:

"Sir, may I use the quill when you've completed your form?"

With the two incongruous questions hanging in the air, he reaches across the table and takes a registration form.
Myrielle: "I think you're worth the trouble, even if the others don't."

Hearing the shrill chatter directed randomly toward the map, Nelio pauses, slightly losing his focus filling out the registration form.

Oh, great, it's the orc-elf...Perhaps I can convince him Josah's boy is carrying a big sack of food. He'll be able to track him down in no time...

Nelio returns to finishing his registration form, double and triple checking that all the information is correct before handing it in. He carefully hands the quill over to the elf, making sure not to spill a drop of ink.

"I do not believe we have formally met. I am Ser Nelio, holy warrior of the Grassy Hill of Noh. I believe we shared a common space during our supper last night at the Steel Staff. I understand you are familiar with the predicament in the Tomm Swamp? I am leading an expedition on the constable's behalf to help rescue (or recover) the localman's son. Would you be interested in joining me? Are you skilled in wilderness survival?"

Turning to Ward, Korgan is oblivious to the other exchange going on. "Ward, I'd like to go to Norbal to find me brother. Hopefully, he hasn't gotten himself into any trouble."

"Very well, Master Dwarf, please sign this registration form."  Ward hands a clean form to Korgan.

Ward eyes Caerus cautiously.  "Your appearance here is rather timely, friend.  You no doubt heard about Josah's plight during our lively discussion earlier, but how do we know you're able to traverse the swamp?  For all I know, you plan to lead Ser Nelio to his death.  You will have to prove to him you are capable."

"I am willing to share the forms, Ser Nelio, if it will help you in your search.  There are not many to see just yet, as it is early in the day, but aside from our Dwarven friend, here, we have four others."  Ward opens the top drawer of the wooden box under the table and produces four completed registration forms.  He hands them over t Nelio, saying, "I can't vouch for the ability of these lot, but here you are."

The young man looks around, as if nervous about being seen in the open.  Through the large gap in his front teeth, he says, "As you wish.  It's about my brother, Ser.  His name is Hoal.  He's planning to sign up to go into the Chaos Dungeon, and I would like to hire you to convince him otherwise.  I can pay you, if you wish, but you would be doing my family a great service by setting him straight.  He's our best worker on the farm, and without him we'll have a hard time making ends meet."

Pointing to the gnome, "He's the one you should hire.  I'm not very good with convincing that don't involve some pain."
Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies.

"Actually, that is why I chose you.  I have tried to reason with him, but he is a stubborn bastard.  I believe that the only way to convince him that he is making a mistake is to show him how unprepared he is.  To put it bluntly, Ser, I want you to beat the crap out of him.  To show him that he will fail in the chaos dungeon despite his great strength.  What do you say, will you help me keep Hoal out of Norbal?"
The next thing I say to you will be true.
The last thing I said was false.
