[3.P] Pimp My Airship: Looking for enchantment suggestions
« on: December 09, 2015, 02:53:09 PM »
As mentioned in this thread, my group may have just found itself with the resources to add 65,000+ worth of enchantments to our airship. Since vehicle optimization isn't an area I normally think about, I figured I'd ask for suggestions on what to get.

  • All pathfinder core material is allowed, and 3.5 material or custom enchantments are allowed with GM permission. He's generally pretty good about letting us get away with stuff, but not a total pushover.
  • I'm currently the only magic item crafter in the group, and I only have Craft Wondrous. This does limit us a bit, since we can't do stuff like enchant the ship's cannons, but I'm hoping a bit of lateral thinking will make up for that.
  • My current spellcraft bonus is +12, so I can make a DC 22 crafting check by taking 10. I can raise this to 24 if the Oracle uses aid another, meaning I can reliably craft items up to a CL of 19, or craft items at a lower CL and bypass a bunch of requirements.
  • Speaking of requirements, our Oracle just picked up Paragon Surge, so we can effectively meet the requirements of any spell available to Oracles.
  • The GM has already stated that I can make items based on 3.5 warlock invocations, using the invocation's effective spell level and the level at which you gain access to that rank of invocation (Least, Lesser, Greater, Dark) as the minimum CL.
  • Specific rules for airships in our campaign can be found here. (Bottom of the page.) Our airship does currently use fuel which might be a good thing to take care of first. Whether that's a Decanter of Endless Fuel Oil hooked up to the engine or a flight enchantment woven straight into the beams is a matter of cost/benefit analysis.

Offhand, I'm thinking an enchantment to eliminate fuel and ammunition costs, some kind of auto-repair ability (would help in fixing those cannons), and maybe abilities to help with weather control, navigation, communication, and security.

So, what crazy ideas can you guys provide? Ship-wide blur? Extra-dimensional panic room/smuggling compartment? Ring Gate gravity cannon? I look forward to seeing your suggestions! :D

Feel free to mention ideas that go over the 65k gp budget, we can always use them later when we've got more money.

Yeah... we went a bit overboard... It was fun while it lasted, though. :P

Overboard you say?

I should tell you about my group's Shadowrun adventures sometime. Overboard is pretty much a starting point for us.  :cool

Some pretty good ideas in that thread though. The healing beds, hero's feast table, and "Bier of Inquisition" particularly jump out as nifty ideas that hadn't occurred to me yet. Also digging the Warding Bell. I'd been thinking that some way to throw up Guards and Wards when we're parked would be a good idea, but hadn't gotten around to specific implementation yet.

Still like the idea of a ring gate cannon. We've got a small sky-island we've unofficially claimed as a home base. (Complete with an ancient Tin Golem operated mine/forge that we've taken over.) We could have the golems bore a narrow shaft in the rock deep enough for anything that falls in to hit max falling object damage. Make a pair of ring gates, have a "loading" ring on the ship, connected to a ring mounted at the top of the shaft. Another ring at the bottom of the shaft connects to the "firing" ring, mounted on a turret or something.

Or hell, maybe just glue it to the Warforged's chest. :D

Another fun option would be making a secure room with ring gates embedded in the walls, entry side facing into the room. Have the corresponding rings placed all over the ship, with their exit side facing out. You could sit in the room and spy on the entire ship and it's surroundings, or even attack and cast spells through the rings, and nobody could reach you unless they pried the rings off their mountings because the entry side would be flush against the wall. Call it the "battle bridge."

Of course, at 40,000 gp a set, those kind of shenanigans are a bit out of our price range just yet.

I could also swear I remember seeing a magic anchor somewhere that was basically a souped-up immovable rod. Could be handy...

How about a Permanencied Shrink Item combined with, say, a slightly modified repeating Secret Chest trap that shrinks everything down and stuffs it into a bottle (of riverine, mind) that you can then send off into the Ethereal whenever you need to? It's now a summonable ship in a bottle. A command word sends the bottle off and leaves the ship there, while blowing the ship back up to normal size.

You normally couldn't use Shrink Item on something the size of a ship, but you CAN use it on all of the ship's various parts and use the same command word for all of it.

If we're going that route, why not just make the whole ship able to go ethereal? Talk about a ghost ship.

You can do that, too. The ship even gets to fly, albeit at half-speed.

Thing is, you still want that ship-inna-bottle, since it allows for easy storage and prevents it from ever being stolen when you're not on it. And if someone does try to steal it, just cast an Alter Self spell on yourself to turn into an avariel (flying elf), leave the ship, and call out the command word. Either your foes will be shrunk down and stuffed in a bottle, or they WON'T be shrunk down and will be stuffed in a bottle. Made of riverine. You'll probably have to go overtime on your use of Prestidigitation to clean THAT mess up, but you should still get XP for it.
