Nifty, thanks for the link!
Yeah... we went a bit overboard... It was fun while it lasted, though.
Overboard you say?
I should tell you about my group's Shadowrun adventures sometime. Overboard is pretty much a starting point for us.
Some pretty good ideas in that thread though. The healing beds, hero's feast table, and "Bier of Inquisition" particularly jump out as nifty ideas that hadn't occurred to me yet. Also digging the Warding Bell. I'd been thinking that some way to throw up Guards and Wards when we're parked would be a good idea, but hadn't gotten around to specific implementation yet.
Still like the idea of a ring gate cannon. We've got a small sky-island we've unofficially claimed as a home base. (Complete with an ancient Tin Golem operated mine/forge that we've taken over.) We could have the golems bore a narrow shaft in the rock deep enough for anything that falls in to hit max falling object damage. Make a pair of ring gates, have a "loading" ring on the ship, connected to a ring mounted at the top of the shaft. Another ring at the bottom of the shaft connects to the "firing" ring, mounted on a turret or something.
Or hell, maybe just glue it to the Warforged's chest.
Another fun option would be making a secure room with ring gates embedded in the walls, entry side facing into the room. Have the corresponding rings placed all over the ship, with their exit side facing out. You could sit in the room and spy on the entire ship and it's surroundings, or even attack and cast spells through the rings, and nobody could reach you unless they pried the rings off their mountings because the entry side would be flush against the wall. Call it the "battle bridge."
Of course, at 40,000 gp a set, those kind of shenanigans are a bit out of our price range just yet.
I could also swear I remember seeing a magic anchor somewhere that was basically a souped-up immovable rod. Could be handy...
