2000/01/02 - Stinging Sunday
« on: October 08, 2013, 09:15:27 AM »
Sunday morning rolls in sluggishly, with both Sam and Kiley deep in their beds until it was nearly noon, when the racket from their neighboring rooms finally prove impossible to ignore. The salve used the night before proved almost magical in it's soothing effect, eliminating the soreness entirely, though it leaves a brownish stain where applied and itches furiously after about an hour or so.

Sam finds a few patches oozing slightly from the burns, the damage showing in thin scabbed streaks and spots where his costume burned through and on the unprotected bits. With time to examine the damage, it looks like he was the victim of some aggressive pecking and scratching by a small intense heat. The marks will need some covering up once the scabs come off, though the burn cream is making them hard to discern for now.

Kiley meanwhile wakes to find her skin dry, cracked and peeling, all of it. Looks like not much worse than a botched attempt at getting a tan, though it feels much worse. There is a most powerful urge to scratch, though as things went she got off lightly for facing enough firepower to melt steel.

Blearily, Sam grimaces at the burn marks in the mirror. Fortunately, most of them will be covered up by his clothes, although he's going to have to get some sort of makeup to conceal the visible ones later. He smears more burn cream over his face and arms as a stopgap measure - the rest should be fine where it is for now. All he'll really have to do is pick up some concealer on the way home.

As he's getting dressed, Sam shoots Kiley a text message: Going to take a look now. Costume stuffed into the backpack he's slung over one shoulder and a quick 'breakfast' of an orange and a bottle of water in hand, he heads out to catch a ride that'll get him near the ruined Sigma Sync office complex.

Kiley's first order of business is a lukewarm shower and shedding all the flakes of skin that are already coming off by themselves anyway. Putting on a skintight wetsuit in this state is nothing short of masochism, but she does it anyway, wearing her clothes over it.

Dressed much the same as yesterday, Kiley belatedly replies to Sam's message while grabbing something to pass for breakfast on the way to her own destination.
Same. Good luck, have fun.

Sam

The Gleam was close enough that all it took was a short bus ride to get to the vicinity of Adams Complex, where Sigma Sync's offices resided. The journey itself was uneventful, as these things went, the only thing of note was a pair of Movers engaged in a street battle, in view one moment and well out of sight the next. Half an hour later. Sam found himself looking at a cordoned off street and work crews in hard hats setting up scaffolding with superhuman speed around a thirty story office complex, with no a vehicle in sight. Looks like the entire block around the ailing structure was closed, and with good reason, an entire corner of the building looked like it had been the test block for Tinker weapons, cracked and scarred in complex patterns.

Kiley

Harkin's Pocket was further away, necessitating a ride to the train station, waiting for a very much delayed train and then another bus to where the lab should be. The streets here were quite scenic, carefully landscaped and with college students just wandering around chattering. Buildings tended to be squat and sprawling, most with ornamental walls, but unable to decide if they wanted a rustic or futuristic look.

It took two hours in all before Kiley found herself looking at the closed gates of Sigma Sync Laboratories, a four story building with imposing grey walls, an effect somewhat ruined by the blackened sections all over, particularly some colorful rivulets of metal and plastic running down the tops of the pillars in the outer walls.

OOC: Perception for Kiley. Investigation for Sam.

Sam
While he couldn't cross the barricades, some idle chit chat with the bored looking worker manning them reveals that work was likely to continue day and night until the building could be stabilized. It wouldn't take very long with Foreman on the job, but there is still some difficulty with the repairs, given the esoteric nature of the power based attacks it sustained.

Kiley notices the melted stuff on top of the pillars seem to be some kind of destroyed weapons system, while other, less ruined pillars, hold what looks to be decorative smoked glass balls, but are far more likely to be disguised security cameras, with their movement and direction obscured by the glass.

Foreman's doing, then. If the work stopped at night, it'd be much easier, but in any case getting in wasn't going to pose a problem either way. After a bit more talk about nothing in particular, Sam strolls on down the street. They might have actually done him a favor by closing the whole block - the barricades would be problematic if he were trying to get in at ground level, but by scaling some nearby buildings and casing the office complex from multiple angles, he should be able to work uninterrupted as long as he's not spotted.

Sam starts looking for a place to change into his costume. No sense wasting time, after all.

Sam

No lack of places to change as it turns out, as construction material waiting to be moved had been left in sizable heaps outside the barricaded area by trucks and other heavy vehicles that couldn't get too close. Sam does notice that the alleys are also blocked off, but not manned like the street blockades are.

Kiley tugs the hood of her jacket lower and takes her time strolling around the outside to get a look at the complex from each side, walking off down a street and coming back from a different one in between to avoid immediate suspicion. Once she's completed a round, she walks off again and looks for a convenient deserted alley to ditch her clothes and backpack in.

With her identity changed, Kaleidoscope moves again to approach from a different direction than the one she left in, waiting until no passersby are in sight on the street.

Kaleidoscope

No suitable alley can be found, while most of them are occasionally vacant as the foot traffic passes through, nowhere is entirely unattended for long. It doesn't take much waiting for the streets to be empty for the moment she needs to flit through on the approach.

It's kind of a tight fit, but in the absence of a sufficiently deserted alley, Kaleidoscope just conceals the backpack inside her own body. As soon as nobody is left in sight, she tenses and sprints towards the wall surrounding the lab, little more than a cloud of color. A few steps away, she jumps and pushes off again in midair to clear the wall and lands in a crouch, ready to dodge if the defense systems turn out to be not all that melted after all.

Kaleidoscope

From over the wall, it becomes much clearer that anything overt had been rendered into a lump of melt, but as she lands on some rather ruined lawn, Kaleidoscope finds herself face to face with a camera lens...set exactly where it'd capture the image of something which might have passed through the wall, inside a somewhat charred bush.

Behind the bush was the plain wall of the main building. No alarms, it seems.

Kaleidoscope purses her lips behind her scarf and steps around the camera looking straight at her as she stands up. Still ready in case of an attack, she goes fully immaterial as she circles the complex again, following a random path to get a lay of the land inside the walls.

Kaleidoscope

The lawn is certainly well maintained, and as she goes around the area, a network of various devices, sensors perhaps, become evident, embedded in the grass, and wired to bushes and walls, unobtrusively. Nothing seems to trigger however, and nobody is out on the lawn in the whole hour it took.

All seems well, until a brief surge of uncertainty passes through Kaleidoscope's mind, as if everything flickered.

Kaleidoscope freezes for one moment, then takes off around the building to put it between herself and that side of the lawn and with it hopefully whoever found her.

Going around the building doesn't seem to help either. as the flickering recurs again.

Ducking behind a pile of rubble left over from the construction efforts when no one's watching, Sam quickly pulls on his costume, starting with the helmet. Once he's finished tucking his civilian clothes into the backpack, he stuffs it into a nearby alcove where hopefully no one will find it.

Preparations finished, Horizon vaults one of the unmanned alley blockades and sprints up one of the walls for the safety of the rooftops, timing the dash so that in theory no one will spot him moving.

Horizon

While the Adams Complex is itself the subject of a lot of attention, the surrounding buildings aren't. Horizon clears the edge of the building just barely in time to avoid a worker stumbling into the scene during a smoke break. This building being a good 20 floors lower, the rooftop gives him a good view of the shattered and warped corner of the complex.

Horizon pulls a pair of compact binoculars from one pocket and settles in to examine the site of the superpowered fight, trying to ignore the increasing urge to scratch wildly at the burns from yesterday.

Horizon

Most of the workers seem to be busy between ground level and the eighth floor, raising the scaffolding and work material. The damaged area extends from the ninth floor to the thirteenth floor, and based on preliminary research, the Sigma Sync offices occupy the twelfth floor. The building's insides seems empty at a glance however.
