Look, it's a mediocre picture of me taken via webcam while at work!  Your turn!

That may be the most bizarre statistic I've ever heard.  Do you have a döppelganger named Ian who is unbelievably well-traveled and popular?

Every picture so far has contained someone I though I recognized, but wasn't in the right country/region.

This is me trying to look nice as I embody one of my favorite philosophies: "talk softly and carry a big stick".
I believe the original quote is "speak softly, and carry a big stick."

My mind always goes to the Space Marine Commander in Dawn of War whenever I see this saying... "Walk softly and carry a big gun" is engraved in my mind after playing the game what can only be described as too much.

Sorry, I was only familiar with the translated version of the quote. Admittedly the nuance of the line gets lost in translation.

Put a pointy hook on the end of that stick, and you could be on the cover of Moby Dick You look like a young version of Captain Ahab, I think. What's your White Whale? All Brazilian politicians? :P

If Kuroi were Captain Ahab, the book would have ended before "Call me Ishmael" had finished.

So, yeah...

Fun fact: I come from a long line of men who have no social skills.

Disturbing moment: When I realized that I saw no problem with how Ikari and Shinji relate to each-other, because after all, my Dad and I are kinda similar in the whole "don't interact well" thing.

Oh, we love each-other, we just have problems expressing it!

This is me about 6 years ago in my junior year of high school.  The biggest change is I've gained weight and gotten a beard and mustache, but I'll take a photo of my current self once I can actually manage to look presentable.

None taken, it's near impossible to get a good pic of me (as long as I'm aware someone is taking my picture at least). This was one of the few where my smile didn't make me look like The Joker instead, so I went with it. If you want a picture or two where I don't look at least half-crazy you'll have to stalk me on facebook. :p

Probably. Cost me about... Eh, $20 in materials, and a few hours of idly working around the gaming table? I made 'em like, six years ago, so I don't remember the specifics too well. The hat was a gift from a friend, who just stuck it on my head one day out of the blue. ...I like hats. You can't really tell in the picture, but it's black with red pinstripes.

True enough, the pinstripes fade away pretty effectively in that picture. Can't even recall when I started using hats, but I've acquired a decent collection. Too bad I never seem to have the one I want since around half of them are here and the other half is in another country...

Ugh, I know the feeling. I mean, mine aren't technically in another country? But they might as well be. Though I can make any knitted or crocheted hat I could want, my haberdashery skills aren't very good.

There is only room for two hats in my heart (even so, I collect silly headgear) one is this little babe (the pick is rather old, but I've worn that hat for 12 years now)

The other is a hat fairly similar to the black one at the top of DonQuixote's hat-tower.

I wouldn't dare trying to knit a hat. Then again, going through second hand stores has become a rather nice hobby. That combined with all the shoes I have it is small wonder some friends have started to ask questions about my sexuality.

Heh. I learned to knit when I was a kid; in my primary school (in Ireland, for the record), it was required. These days, when I was a hat or some gloves or whatever - or if a friend of mine does - it's just easier to get out some yarn in the colour and fibre I know I like, and knit it up myself, rather than go shopping for one.  :flutter

The yarn was hand-dyed, and spun for me by a friend of mine. ♥

Yeah, black leather from the land down under. I got it as a gift when my aunt and the rest of her family moved there in 2000. I could probably treat it a little better as far as greasing it up from time to time goes, but over all it is still in great shape. It even helped me earn nicknames such as "The Hat" and "Hatzor" on campus.

Things like that can become iconic to the point that people won't recognise you without it. It's hilarious to sneak up on a friend and scare the bejeezus out of 'em when you're dressed or groomed in a way somehow different from your norm.

Just tell them you haven't been dating because you only find massively pregnant white trash blondes sexy.  The several moments of conversation will be worth the initial looks on their faces alone.  Make sure to bring a camera ;)

Also, I should probably repeat my point about taking advice from cats...

Hello, handsome. You sir have a fine sense of style.  :love

Heh, thanks.  Unfortunately, I suspect that I won't get away with dressing like this once I graduate and have to work in the real world.

That's... A lot of books man!

We run our D&D sessions in the college's Science Fiction library.  You can't see it in this picture, but we have an entire bookcase devoted to role-playing games.

Things like that can become iconic to the point that people won't recognise you without it. It's hilarious to sneak up on a friend and scare the bejeezus out of 'em when you're dressed or groomed in a way somehow different from your norm.

This.  This forever.  I once went to the dining hall for breakfast, sat down with my friends, and started eating.  Somewhere between fifteen minutes and half an hour later, they realized that I was there.

Fairly recent (waiting for the Avengers premier, as if the earrings weren't a dead giveaway), fairly awful.

Slightly less recent, showing off my new haircut. (Colours are more accurate than the previous.)

Love the earrings, and absolutely beautiful hair.  It's a fantastic color, and the length is just about perfect for the look you have going.  Your eyes are also fascinating--they look brown in the first picture, blue in the second, and green in the third.

----

Anyway, I completely forgot to post more pictures yesterday, so I guess I'll rip some old ones from my Facebook and post them now!

I'm not entirely sure who to blame for this one, but this is from the first D&D campaign I ever played in.  Making it about two years old.

I haven't shaved for 2.5 weeks now and went out without my hat 2 days ago. Ran in to two friends who didn't recognize me until I was standing right in front of them. I didn't scare them, but they looked rather puzzled about this random guy who was obviously heading towards them.

That is probably why he bit me.

I would consider it a favour if someone who knew how to do photomanipulation would insert a chessboard between me and the kangaroo. I've always thought it would be a great addition to the picture.

Hello, handsome. You sir have a fine sense of style.  :love

Heh, thanks.  Unfortunately, I suspect that I won't get away with dressing like this once I graduate and have to work in the real world.

Maybe not the hats, but the rest of it? Never, ever underestimate the power of a three-piece-suit at an interview. Or anywhere else.

----

Fairly recent (waiting for the Avengers premier, as if the earrings weren't a dead giveaway), fairly awful.
(click to show/hide)

Slightly less recent, showing off my new haircut. (Colours are more accurate than the previous.)
(click to show/hide)

Love the earrings, and absolutely beautiful hair.  It's a fantastic color, and the length is just about perfect for the look you have going.  Your eyes are also fascinating--they look brown in the first picture, blue in the second, and green in the third.

Thank you! The colour is mostly natural; the ends are dyed, but not the rest. My eyes are actually almost colourless - very pale steely kind of colour - so they tend to pick up and reflect what I'm wearing, or look different depending on the kind of light that's around.

----

Anyway, I completely forgot to post more pictures yesterday, so I guess I'll rip some old ones from my Facebook and post them now!

In case you can't tell, I combined the filling from three Oreos to create...the Doom Oreo.  It was delicious.

The Halloween pictures are excellent. Your costume is A++, would save Gotham from you again. I especially like the suit; was it one you already had? Either way, definitely one of the better Jokers I've seen.

Maybe not the hats, but the rest of it? Never, ever underestimate the power of a three-piece-suit at an interview. Or anywhere else.

The problem is one of coloration.  I suspect that interviewers might bat a few eyelashes at a wine-colored jacket.  Or a vibrant purple shirt.  Once I'm working there?  Might not be a problem.  But I suspect that, during interviews, there's a degree to which I should look less wacky.

Thank you! The colour is mostly natural; the ends are dyed, but not the rest. My eyes are actually almost colourless - very pale steely kind of colour - so they tend to pick up and reflect what I'm wearing, or look different depending on the kind of light that's around.

Hah!  Another one.  My eyes are grey as well, and listed that way on my driver's license.  Mine tend to vacillate primarily between blue and pale green.

The Halloween pictures are excellent. Your costume is A++, would save Gotham from you again. I especially like the suit; was it one you already had? Either way, definitely one of the better Jokers I've seen.

So, that suit was my first suit--bought it just for the costume.  Before that, I dressed in t-shirts and jeans and what have you.  Once I wore the costume, though, I realized that I loved wearing button-up shirts and vests.  So, that started.  Shortly after that, I added the tie to the ensemble.  Suspenders were quick to follow, as was a pocketwatch.  Then, at the beginning of my sophomore year at college, I obtained the hats and the coats.  A new era had dawned, and there was no turning back.

The fullness of the Joker costume is, alas, incomplete in a photographic format.  I spent most of high school doing acting and, during that time, developed a not-insignificant ability with my vocal range.  I'm no voice actor, but I'm able to pull off a variety of different voices, most of which have characters set to them.  It's incredibly useful when DMing.  For the Joker, I lifted a slight imitation of Heath Ledger's voice, but substituted in many of the mannerisms portrayed in Alan Moore's The Killing Joke.  I added two more voices--a low growl and a frenzied maniacal hooting--and bounced between the three according to sentence development and mood shift.  I also have an insane cackle on hand, so that was useful.

In terms of physicality, I put a lot into slow movements of the head and jerky shoulder motion.  The walk was a "long" one--I put my legs out in front of me and let my body follow.  At least, when I was calm.  When I got worked up, my gait shifted dramatically, causing me to seem to lunge forward when becoming excitement.

Facial expression didn't require much practice, as I do a lot of that.  I would go between deadpan, a wide-eyed smile, and a face-contorting rictus.  Again, dependent on context.

Depends on where you're interviewing, I suppose. The vibrant purple shirt, with a charcoal vest and a dove-grey jacket would be excellent. The tie would have to depend on the situation, and tenor of the company. That combination would, in corporateese indicate that you are conservative, but willing to take risks. Purple is also a good 'power' colour, with its long association with both royalty and the mystical.

Er.

Thank you! The colour is mostly natural; the ends are dyed, but not the rest. My eyes are actually almost colourless - very pale steely kind of colour - so they tend to pick up and reflect what I'm wearing, or look different depending on the kind of light that's around.

:D  ...Did you know that blue and grey eyes actually have no pigment in them? The colouration is structural, like in a butterfly's wing; the colour comes as a result of Rayleigh or Mie scattering. Thus, the difference in colour depending on circumstances. This has been your biophysics lesson for the day.

The Halloween pictures are excellent. Your costume is A++, would save Gotham from you again. I especially like the suit; was it one you already had? Either way, definitely one of the better Jokers I've seen.

NICE. Very nice. Getting into character is the best, and not only does that put you a head and shoulders above other Jokers, that'd put you into the top tier of cosplayers, in my book. There are so many people who dress up, and then don't act the part. I mean, sure, some people have crap for acting skills, but... Points for trying? But yeah. Good on you.  :D

While you may be right, I'm going to wait until I actually have some guarantee of employment before I wear anything fun to an interview.  I'm still not convinced that it's risk-free, and steady employment is more important than asserting one's right to dress colorfully at an interview.

Plus, I wear the purple shirt with the brown-and-tan striped vest, the lighter brown tie, khaki pants, and the wine-colored jacket.  Why would I upset a winning formula?  :tongue

:p  Gotta mix it up sometimes, man! Okay, in that case, go with a royal, navy, or ultramarine shirt. Not quite as outrè as purple, but still a sophisticated look. Also remember to wear a lighter-coloured jacket in the spring and summer, and a darker/richer coloured one in the fall and winter.

I do not have anywhere near the funds to change clothes with the season.  Between coats, hats, vests, and ties...it adds up.  I have three hats, four coats, six vests, and four ties.  Half of the coats and vests are black-associated, while the other half are brown-associated--and I do not cross those streams.

It has its pros and cons. For instance, in my case I live in the rainforest, basically, so it's raining more often than it's sunny. 'Round here, we say there're four kinds of weather: about to rain, just rained, raining, and monsoon.

These two are more recent. The first one I was trying on white khaki pants at work and the other I was trying to get a picture of our dog and I together for some reason (also no flash). Note: Closely shaved head and a maintained beard; conclusion: I still have no idea who I am, but I only need to use body wash in the shower now instead of body wash, shampoo AND conditioner. Might as well share a few of me.
These ones are old. Like MySpace still relevant old (which is actually the only place I had them until about five minutes ago). Note: Long hair, brutal beard; conclusion: totally still in high school and I was posturing how badass I was (too bad nobody bought it).

(click to show/hide)

These two are more recent. The first one I was trying on white khaki pants at work and the other I was trying to get a picture of our dog and I together for some reason (also no flash). Note: Closely shaved head and a maintained beard; conclusion: I still have no idea who I am, but I only need to use body wash in the shower now instead of body wash, shampoo AND conditioner. Totally MinMax'd my showering.

DOG!  DOG!

...I miss my dog.

:bigeyes Awww. I'm allergic to dogs, unfortunately. Because I love them. They are wiggly and happy and snuggly and full of love. Luckily, I'm not allergic to cats, too, but it'd be nice to have both...

PUPPY!!! Totally the most relevant part of this I mean what.

....Do I spy a fellow redhead?  :flutter

Yes. Yes, you do. I'm more strawberry blond than a true redhead, but I count it because of my beard.

As for Pippin -- as in that trifling ass Hobbit -- he's far from a puppy. He still acts like it, though. It's really cute. He's a rat terrier and super active and always in and out of trouble. At least he doesn't eat power cords and cigarettes anymore. That was a very frustrating eight months of my life. He gets super excited whenever I come home and then immediately nuzzles up to my girlfriend and begins showing out by eating his food and waggling a whole bunch. He can be a grumpy little bastard though and makes things that are very simple (laying down on my bed) very complicated (because he'll decide that my face is a pillow). I love 'em though. Kristie did a good job when she picked him -- though, the way she tells the story, he picked her.

Hey, mine's more auburn unless I get a lot of sun, but we still both have the MCr1a mutation!  :D

Your doggy sounds amaaaazing.  :blush I want to snuggle him and scritch his ears! Power cords I understand - my cat does the same thing, and I have to admit, the rubber seems like the kind of texture a teething critter would dig - but cigarettes? Really? Eugh. Silly puppy.

We used to have a cat named Shadow, but he died to kidney failure about ten years ago.  Here's a picture of him as a kitten sitting on a down comforter.

Smart little cat too.  He'd of course go after door handles, but on occasion managed doorknobs too.  If a door was open a crack he'd put his paw around it and pull to open.  One time he acted like a dog when I told him to come, sit, and shake my hand just to see what would happen, but it's quite possible he just did that on his own accord regardless of what I said. lol

Awwww, what a sweet babycat. Actually, my kitty will sit, shake, give a high-five, and play fetch.

She loves fetch.

She will wake me at four in the morning to play fetch.

The birthday card I made for bhu some time ago was starring my flatmate's cat (re-posting, for your convenience). He's kinda stupid, but a very nice cat whom I've trained to stand on his hind legs for that extra adorableness. I still wish he would play fetch with me more often...

Just for you Bhu.  Her name is Kata and her favourite thing to do is stop me or my girlfriend from studying/working.

Oh, and knocking things over, she's really good at that for such a graceful cat.  Hence her name.  Kata as in form/movement but also the onomatopoeic Japanese for clattering - katakata.  (also, my girlfriend thinks she looks like Megata Tanetaro...)

Nope. I have had more friends from the Quiltbag than not, but I myself am a Hetero Male.
But with fiends like mine, I was quite well educated on how to pull off drag very well. And I happen to be secure in my sexuality enough to not care.
A week and a half before I did that, a guy who was always trying to start rumors about people said he'd seen me near a gay bar in drag. At a time when I was with the volunteer ambulance service cleaning up a suicide no less.

So I had some of my friends help me design the outfit. And I showed up to work on Halloween. In Drag Cos-play. In a factory. I went up to the rumor-mill and said "hi" before I changed. He didn't recognize me. It was that good.

So far, the only time I have done drag. It was fun. Heck, learning how to blow up condoms so that they look like tits was an interesting lesson on its own (the reservoir makes nipples :)) )

Funny you'd say that. Don't worry, apparently I have at least 1 döppelganger in the U.S., maybe more. I had a woman tell me she thought she saw me a few weeks ago. She lives in Virginia. I live in Sweden.
I also know I have a lookalike living close to the same city as I do, I've gathered clues to his music taste, where he shops for food and where he goes to exercise through comments I've had directed at me. I finally managed to spot him in the local newspaper, almost everyone I know agrees with me that we do look alike, he's just a bit less gaunt than I am. I even entertained for a brief period of time to go strolling around the area where he lives to see if I would run into him, but I decided against it.

Unless you're a member on PersonalityCafé.com (not a dating site, just so you all know :P), I can't think of any place you'd seen me-me. More likely that you've seen not-me. If you ever meet not-me again and you know him decently well, tell him his döppelganger said "hi".

It's Palácio da Alvorada, or for everyone that speaks english, Palace of Dawn.
Palace of Dawn, eh? Are there golden showers of light?
Sorry, I'll stop now.

He's my little cousin Caio Flávio. And yes, as of now, he's about a week old. He's the son of my youngest uncle (i.e. the youngest brother of the family). His mother had a pregnancy scare and they didn't think the doctors back where they lived were gonna cut it - so mom invited them here, and they spent a few months with us until he was born.

They left yesterday, and I miss the lil' guy already.  :bigeyes

Is there any particular reason the writing is backwards on that  t-shirt? :P

Because Photo Booth is a strange and arcane program.  For those who can't read backwards, it says "DON'T MAKE ME GO ZELDA ON YOU."  Truly, I am a nerd.  Then again, I have written several hundred pages of D&D homebrew, so we already knew that.

You may have to wait a bit longer for those. The person who took pictures originally has flaked out on me and since I'm in Cardiff, I don't have the costume to snap a few pictures.

That said, have this instead. A friend commissioned the artist who does Calliope's artwork to draw a quick picture of the two of us.

I'm not Caucasian. I am German, Irish, and Scottish. I have no ancestors traceable to the Caucasus. Therefore, I prefer the term "white".

I only throw out this comment because people should know how subtly racist it is to link a person to a place based on their skin color. A black girl from my high school finds the term "African-American" very offensive because all of her family comes from Jamaica or Haiti, peoples with rich and vibrant cultures quite separate from the stereotypical African ones.

So, I've been going to the gym pretty steadily for the last 18-19 months. I've gotten into the habit of taking progress photos of myself in the one-man changing room at my gym, since it's a full-length mirror. Most of these are shirtless or in a workout shirt, and not really meant for public sharing, but I've also been trying to get a few in my day-clothes to show to friends and family:

(click to show/hide)

I'm pretty proud of my accomplishments, I've established myself as one of the bigger and stronger guys at the gym, and have been more social with the other serious lifters in the last few weeks. It's kinda weird, I've also been getting those 'looks' from the regular folks, the "whoah, look at the big dude" type looks. It's a bit of a boost to my ego.  :D

Likewise, I descend from Portuguese and either Spanish or French roots, with likely a dash of Arab in for good measure (I am a bit more tanned than some of my pictures would suggest). I have a hard time classifying myself as pretty much anything ethnically speaking. Which is the case for a lot of Brazillians too.

Your obviously superior genetics must be spread!

I can imagine the news story now:
Quote
Today: in Brazil.
This week, three women all gave birth by C-section in a most unusual manner. Each of the women's children managed some form of technique while in the womb that caused the mothers flesh to split as clean as a surgical cut. Each of the babies then crawled out on their own power, and even cinched and cut their own umbilical cords. The babies then took a much deserved nap. The first one, who'd been born on Monday, had actually been spanked by the doctor, as per long-standing custom. The doctor is expected to be able to return to work by next month. Fortunately, that story got around to other hospitals quickly enough that none of the other doctors attempted to interrupt the other two children's naps.
Investigations are still pending as to the reason for this phenomenon, but it is known that each of the women were fertilized at the same clinic. We will continue to follow this story, and report when more is known.

I am unsure if even you can do that yet, so I imagine even the localized blood-stopping pressure point control would take them until they were at least 2. (And for the skeptics, yes, that is a thing. I've met a few trauma Paramedics that knew how to do it for certain body parts.)

And I'm not sure the bruised kick-marks would make it in the news blip, but I had considered it. ;)

Your facial expressions are thoroughly amusing.

And that's after I culled out the ones with faces I determined as "weird".  Well, except for that second picture.  I don't really know what's going on there but it amuses me.

My Kyudo group (the largest japanese archery organization in my country-also the only one) was invited to participate in this year's Iberanime (http://www.iberanime.com/pos_evento). Altough we were suposed to rotate between demonstrations and workshops, we ended up spending most of the day in a never-ending workshop where people in the event were lining up at our door to get taught Kyudo basics. And it was AWESOME!

As usual, I was the group's reporter with my digital camera. Here's some highlights:

Pretty kitty.  :)

Okay, some of you might remember looking at my old fuzzy tattoo here (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=5808.msg146034#msg146034).  (Why yes, I am linking a post that is on the same page as this one, it just makes things easier.)  It was/is six or seven years old and the ink was spreading in ways that I didn't like.  There were a lot of reasons I never got it colored when it was new, mostly related to either money or the lack of a good tattoo artist.

Well I found a new tattoo artist and he fixed it up better than even he predicted when I was planning it out with him.  It isn't completely finished but this took an hour and a half so both the artist and I were ready to call it quits for the day.

It is possible, my dad (American) and his wife (South African) and their kids (mix, one is hers before they got together, one is theirs) vacation in Cape Town.  :p

That reminds me of something cool that I never think about.  My dad's wife is Zulu and I was his best man for the wedding and was also part of the traditional Zulu wedding ceremony (dad had to buy cows and everything).  As part of the ceremony I was adopted into her family which means that I'm a part of a Zulu tribe.

The cuisine in Uganda is very poor, so there isn't much to tell.

There is cornmeal cooked with minimal water that turns into a stiff lump, then cut into portions and served with boiled beans (posho); there is cornmeal with some more water that is served as porridge; and then there is cornmeal with even more water that is sweetened and fermented to make a beverage.

There is rice, yams, cassava, mashed plantains and/or potatoes served with meat, fish, chicken or beans, and there are boiled or sautéed greens or cabbage served either as a side dish or mixed in with the beans.

Cooked and fresh bananas abound, often served with groundnut sauce which is crushed peanuts cooked in water until thick. Ugandan groundnut sauce is pink, because of the reddish hue of the skin of the peanuts grown here.

Up in the north they also drink blood. Its not cooked in any special way; you just bleed the cow and drink it.

Tomatoes and onions are added to everything to add some flavour, and sometimes people add garlic and ginger or some curry powder.
