The Shadow Dragon summons creates orbs of glowing darkness to guide you to the locations you're interested in going.

Vist

Vist draws the Truesilver Rod from his pack.As beautiful as this is, it contains the raw materials I need for a project I'm working on.  Vist pulls out some paper and charcoal and starts sketching the vessel, including extra details on the lid and sealing structure.  What are your thoughts on this?  I'm still a little concerned on how to properly lock it closed.  I was thinking of several hasps of adamantium and a retaining collar to band them together about the middle section.  The collar can be locked closed here. Vist points to a location on the vessel.

Dyson, finally understanding that the Warlord was actually directing his question to him, says "I am here merely to observe."

Iskandar steps into the arena, still vaguely unsure of the prospect of sparring with a fighter on the Shining General's level of experience.

"I promise nothing. Either I survive and you have a willing, stalwart pupil, or you defeat me and rid yourself of dead weight. All things must pass into dust. I am ready."

Iskandar's blades slither into his hands. Despite his speed, however, it seems the General is faster...

Vist

Good call on the Cold Iron.  The added resistance to magic will be a boon.

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure I want a lock.  Something that when set, fuses shut and becomes inoperable and preferably invulnerable.  No matter how clever the lockmaker, there is always a move clever thief who can defeat it.  Once this thing is shut, I don't want it ever to be opened.  Not in 10,000 years, not in 10 million years.

The design looks close to completed.  Let me know when you begin fabrication.  I'd prefer to be there.

Iskandar falls, his blades not fast enough to deflect the blows landed by his God-like sparring partner. His wounds bleed flowing sand, which pools around him in a growing pile.

Some of the surrounding soldiers cheer for their victorious commander, others make small religious signs for the fallen warrior. The lord stares coldly at Iskandar's corpse for some moments before pulling a scroll from under his armor and speaking:

Iskandar, your training hasn't ended yet. I saw great potential in you in this brief moment of battle, and if nothing else, I do not wish for our common enemies to have a chance to grab your soul in one of the next worlds.

The Lord then kneels and touches the dead warrior with one hand while carefully starting to read divine words from the paper he's holding in his other hand. Iskandar's body starts to glow with a pure white light, the hot sand flowing back inside his veins. The Lord continues reading for several minutes, not stopping even when a courier comes to whisper something at his ear, then the light fades and Iskandar's wounds are completely healed, his fiery heart beating again.

Stand up, Iskandar. I've been informed that your companion Vist will be busy for the next several hours, meaning we'll have more time for training than expected. Now that I've got a good grasp of your limits, I can make you surpass some of them. Where would you like to improve? Say the word and I'll give you a complete workout for it.

Iskandar crawls up to one knee, then two, before finally rising. He coughs, though instead of blood, he expels sand from his lungs in a puff of dust.

"Thank you, Lord General. It seems I still have much to learn. In fact, it appears as though I must shore up quite a few weaknesses, if I am to face the challenges that await. First, I believe I must be able to cover any openings I leave in my defense. Once I counter an assault of such a magnitude, I will also need to ensure my bladeskill is at the peak of performance, or else I will have no effect against a powerful enemy. This is the reason I sought you out in the first place, after all. Aside from Vist and the group's quest, that is."

At the arena, the Lord puts Iskandar through the hardest training he ever experienced. The seasoned commander shows him a series of exotic exercises, points out the smallest flaws in the desert warrior's stance and movements as he tries to replicate them, then has Iskandar repeat them some hundred times more. While using a magically weighted blade and armor. After several long hours that seem like days (or were it actually multiple days? Hard to tell when there's no sun or moon, only the innate brilliance of the citadel of light), with only a few short pauses to relax your muscles, the Lord finally calls an end to the session. Once the training armor is removed, Iskandar starts feeling the results. His body still feels sore, but now more nimble, his mind more clear, new energy surging from inside him.

At the forge, once Vist returns, Dermot gets to work with the truesilver after showing the full design plans and any last details are agreed. The precious metal is carefully melted over a bound elder fire elemental, turning a glowing white, then poured into prepared molds, and from there beaten into shape with a runed hammer by the dwarf. The time of each construction step is counted with extreme precision by a small clockwork contraptition that the dwarf says it's an ancient Inevitable's heart. His movements look crude but the final result is an elegant craft, perfectly accordingly to Vist's specifications, ending with two halves connected by a turning mechanism. Several intricate internal clasps stand ready to lock the container once it is closed. The cold iron bands are added at the end, before the dwarf hands the sophisticated item to Vist. It feels impossibly smooth for something made of metal.

Vist observes the careful crafting of the dwarf, adding insight in a couple places, but mostly observing.

Iskandar wipes sweat from his brow. Despite the sandy texture of his skin, it comes off clean, rather than as a muddy glob.

"I see, now. I thank you, glorious general, for the time you've taken to train me. This has been... most illuminating."

Shortly after Vist has his truesilver sealing box and Iskandar has developed his martial abilities, a scout arrives to report arrives that the general's scouts have discovered the location of the portal connecting the Plane of Shadows to the lowest layer of Hell. The place is guarded by a small but elite force of devils, led by at least one Cornugon and two Gelugons.

The Lord suggests that the party may best be suited for clearing up the gate's defences and securing the planar passage. He wants to keep his main army hidden for as long as possible.

Vist

Vist rests his arm on the bristling inevitable.  Calm yourself.  We still need some more information, at least enough to teleport by.  Where is this portal, and what is it's nature?  Does it have a key, and is that key known?

"At least one cornugon? Whatever that is, I assume that means there could be more, yes?"

Turning to the others, Iskandar asks, "What do we know of these devils... cornugons and gelugons, was it? What capabilities do they have?"

The inevitable stops his battle preparations at the touch of the mage, then says in his deep monotone voice "Acknowledged.

Mage Vist, I also should inform you that the Quintessence you requested was collected by this unit."

Vist

Vist collects the remainder of the Quintessence that Dyson had fabricated, securing it in extradimensional space for convenient storage.
