3.5 Forms for Alter Self

Uses of Alter Self: (discussion thread here)
Mobility: Pick a few forms that can fly, swim, and burrow. I think you'd get a climb speed also, which can be handy.

Combat: High natural armor class, and natural attacks. Mobility can be helpful here also.

Utility: Many creatures have high racial bonuses to skills, and/or racial bonus feats. Telling whether something is a racial bonus feat or not can be tricky. If it has a (B) next to it in the feats section, it definitely is. Otherwise, if the creature's description doesn't say that it is, it probably isn't. All creatures get feats every three levels, and at first level, and you don't get those from the spell. I think disguising yourself as a member of another race, or an individual, also falls under this, but I guess it could be its own category.

If you submit something to be added to the list, please list the HD of the creature, the Type of the creature, benefits it offers, and what book or resource it is from.

Just so we are all clear on what exactly you can get from the spell, here is an excerpt from its description in the SRD. Pay special attention to the parts I've underlined.
 
Here is the compiled list so far, taken from lists by Lilt, Schulerta, ErikPSO, SouthernSkies, and various other sources. Dpskane is in the process of adding a column to it that indicates whether the form would be capable of using Verbal and/or Somatic components. Feel free to look over the list, and check to make sure it is correct, because I don't own all of the books used as sources in it.

Southernskies compiled a couple of lists of Magical Beasts with under 5 HD for use on familiars and other companions via the Share Spells ability.

The Sage recently said that familiars can only take the forms of animals using Alter Self (via Share Spells). He is obviously wrong. If you want to know why, look near the bottom of Page 2 of this thread. Southernskies lays it out well there.

Plus a personal favourite of mine from Shining South that was not included in the above. It is sentient (Int 12), can speak common and has true seeing at will!! This means it can tell its master about any illusions/hidden dangers ect/invisible/ethereal people etc the list goes on…

The most important thing I wish to bring to light is that on the above list there are creatures of the abberation, construct, dragon, monstrous humanoid, outsider and undead types.
And these familiars can transform into any creature of there own type (within a size category either way) upto the maximum caster level of the wizard who cast alter self (Max 5HD).
The challenge is can any one come up with a overpowered creature of the expressed types within the capacity of alter self? This allows the Improved Familiar feat even more depth (abuse LOL) when used with alter self?

Ok, this was already in the Aberration list, but I just noticed how crazy good the Gibbering Mouther would be as a melee form. +8 natural armor, 6 natural attacks, and four very good Extraordinary Special attacks. You might arguably get the Amorphous quality, also, since it is kind of intrinsic to the form of the monster. This would be super for an Elan Psion/Wizard/Cerebremancer idea that I keep playing around with. (This for combat, then add Metamorphic Transfer + Choker form for extra action goodness occasionally).

Spittle (Ex)

As a free action every round, a gibbering mouther fires a stream of spittle at one opponent within 30 feet. The mouther makes a ranged touch attack; if it hits, it deals 1d4 points of acid damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 18 Fortitude save or be blinded for 1d4 rounds. Eyeless creatures are immune to the blinding effect, but are still subject to the acid damage. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Improved Grab (Ex)

To use this ability, a gibbering mouther must hit with a bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity.

Swallow Whole (Ex)

The gibbering mouther can attempt to swallow a grappled opponent of Medium or smaller size by making a successful grapple check. (The gibbering mouther doesn’t actually “swallow” the opponent—it engulfs it within its amorphous form—but the effect is essentially the same.) Once inside, the gibbering mouther can use its blood drain ability. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by dealing 5 points of damage to the gibbering mouther (same AC).

The gibbering mouther’s body can hold 1 Medium, 2 Small, 8 Tiny, 32 Diminutive, or 128 Fine creatures.

Blood Drain (Ex)

A swallowed opponent automatically takes 1d4 points of Constitution damage each round.

Wyrmling Mercury Dragon (Dragons of Faerun) is Tiny, has 3HD, 2 natural armor, and a 200' fly (perfect) speed.  A Very Young Mercury Dragon - accessible via Reserves of Strength - has 6HD, 5 natural armor, and a 200' (perfect) fly speed.  These fly speeds are capped at 120' of course.

Just convince your DM to use Serpetent Kingdoms + web enchancement. There's a bunch of saurial themed humanoids (reptilian), here's my favorites:

Flyer / Small humanoid (reptilian) / 20ft, Fly 50ft / NA +4 (+1AC small) / caution: hands=wings!
Hornhead / Large humanoid (reptilian) / 30ft, Climb 30ft / NA +4 (-1AC large)
Tren / Medium humanoid (reptilian) / 30ft, 40 Swim / NA +8

There are a few more in this book + web enchancement, but not as spectacular. In my last campaign I was constantly altering myself into a flyer or tren. So OP! In my current campaign this book is not allowed, so Alter Self becomes more a spell to disguise yourself or maybe swim or climb, which is quite situational.
