I want to inspect a ways behind it; maybe a quarter mile, or so. Is it leaving footprints? Any other clues?

Search = 1d20+17, take 20 = 37
(If forced to roll because I can't spend the time, otherwise, just take 20):
Rolled 1d20+17 : 7 + 17, total 24

Knowledge (TMWNMTK) = 1d20+11
Rolled 1d20+11 : 6 + 11, total 17

IT's leaving a trail of some kind, like it's scouring the ground as it goes.  You believe it's a servitor of some kind, but summoned by who or for what purpose youo're uncertain.

Which direction is it heading? How far is it currently from town?

It's headed into the mountains, far from civilization, though it may encounter the Trogs.

Lets hope.  :smirk

As long as she's out this far, Elizabeth decides to go check on the trogs, as well.

There are bodies in the mountains.  Some of them Trog, some of them human, most partially eaten.  It would appear they are hunting stragglers from our (or nearby) town(s), and they aren't above cannibalism.

If nearby towns aren't too far out, Elizabeth would like to check on them, as well.

Do you know how that would translate to flying? The hawk's speed is 60'.

About the same, most horses are 50-60 ft.

That's more than she's willing to invest in the trip.

How are the trogs looking? Do they appear starved compared to earlier in the year?

Do there seem to be signs of anything else in the forest (apart from that huge thing)?

Other than that, Elizabeth will head back to town if nothing catches her eye. She wants to see to a rebuilding of defenses in case the trogs launch an even more desperate attack in the future. Does it look like the weather will be clear for a while?

The trogs seem watchful.  They do not appear to be traveling in anything other than large groups.-

Presumably they've been picked off by something big, and they're learning.

Elizabeth heads back to make sure defenses are good and that the bow training is going nicely. She's also going to advocate that any hunting/supply groups go out at least eight people strong.

There is news from Philadelphia.  They have returned to the old method of producing gunpowder with urine instead of saltpetre.  It takes forever, but it means the colonies won't run dry.

Do people in the town know how to produce using this method? I'm assuming Elizabeth could probably figure it out with her +10 in Knowledge (Physical Sciences).

If you need a check for her figuring it out, teaching people, or whatever: 1d20+10

You can substitute manure of some kind (preferably bat, but cow will do) and urine for the saltpetre.  This requires a 10 month process.  You can make it much quicker by substituting potassium chlorate, but that requires substantial chemical knowledge and equipment in your era.  It's also highly fucking unstable, particularly paired with sulfur, and could easily result in death.

Elizabeth will opt to avoid the super dangerous method. She instructs the people to start gathering the necessary supplies to get a head start on production, as well as to make sure we have enough cows kept alive for this reason, alone (and, presumably, milking).

Are there any nearby caves or other known sources of bats?

From the town's perspective, what's the difference on using cow manure instead of guano? At this point, getting guano means a lengthy travel and a vicious fight (using up more powder). If it's not necessary or even really important, Elizabeth wants to opt to use cow manure until winter has a chance to start killing the trogs.

Guano is just higher in nitrates.  You can try making up for ti by using the urine of wine drinking men (seriously I looked this up).
