The caravan from Tyr to Urik had been a painful one, the journey slow and fractious, the various merchants arguing with one another, the kanks loud, smelly, and feisty, the food poor and the water brackish.

Which was why, still in the Wastes, Klau-Doth was able to convince the others that they were better served striking out on their own in search of a legendary treasure, one whispered about amongst even the caravan guards. After all, they had enough supplies to traverse the desert wastes for some time, and with an undead mekillot as a riding beast, they need not fear their mount would pass away.

While not entirely convinced by his arguments (after all, if it was that well known a legendary treasure, why had no one found it yet?), Kythor and Urax agreed that even the stifling heat and loneliness of the Wastes was better than trudging along in a unending stream of kank crap. And so the three of them set out atop the mekillot, letting its howdah shade them as they trundled into the burning sands.

Instinct guided them, maps of the area being inconclusive, until they stood atop the edge of a great sandy bowl, heat pummelling down upon them. But below, in the sunken vastness, stood not only the vast bulks of sandstone mesas, but also, far in the distance, the unmistakeable visual of a temple, cut deep into a sandstone cliff. Perhaps the legends were true, after all.

Between them and their goal lay a vast expanse of baking sand, perhaps nine miles in distance. Nearest to the temple, it glowed and glittered, almost blinding even from a distance, but looking like a fiery ring of gold. Perhaps it signalled the treasures that were to come… or perhaps a burning heat, one that would exhaust them all.

Kythor sits cross legged in the howdah's shade, his back against one of its side rails. He stretches his arms over his shaved head and yawns, sending his psicrystal scurrying down of his shoulder and down across his chest. The dark purplish Crystal curled it's eight spindly legs underneath itself and rested in his lap. Looking out across the sand , he peers closer at the structure rising in the distance before saying,

"Urax, looks like we might not have wasted our time after all. Klau-Doth, I've got to hand it to you, I was beginning to doubt we'd find anything out here."

"Your lack of faith is your weakness. Doubt not my abilities, and in the power of the elements to guide us."

Urax snorts.  "We'll see if there's any treasure in there before we decide that it's worth our time.  Let's see if your abilities can get inside."

From most people Klau-Doth might have been gravely insulted, even to the point of being incited to violence, by such a disdainful remark. However, he knew that the mul, after having suffered so greatly as a slave, had an almost irresistible emotional compulsion to lash out at any perceived "authority" figures. So he bit his tongue... for now. There would be a time to put him in his place. For now, he might be more useful with unbroken free will.

The priest smiles and says "We will see. I was confident that I could find it, but I thought I might need help getting in and out alive... That's why I invited you two."

"It's not my lack of faith I was concerned about. Was more worried you had decided I'd be better off like your pet here."

Kythor finished with a chuckle as he patted the mellikot beneath then.

The priest chuckles grimly and says "No... for some purposes, the living perform much more admirably than the dead. Mekillots however, are much more... agreeable after you've killed them, and no less functional as mounts."

After a pause Urax decides that Klau-Doth wasn't taking the lead anymore.  However, he has no interest in getting off the mekillot and walking through through the wastes.

He settles on gesturing to the building.  "Are we going to go or are we going to sit here talking about your powers?"

With a HMPH sound, Klau-Doth directs the giant undead mount down towards the waiting ruins.

As they rode into the depression, the heat built and built, reflecting off the sand and bathing the area in a searing warmth that clawed at them even beneath the shade of the howdah. The temperature made their armour blisteringly hot, seeming to cling to them like an elven pickpocket's caress.

Klau-Doth tops off the barrel of water and says "Drink, friends. This heat is unbearable. We must make sure to stave off dehydration."

Urax drinks sparingly, shaking his head at his companions.  There's a reason that he has four waterskins.

"Hopefully the ruins will provide some respite... and not more heat..." the priest says, as he guides the undead beast deeper into the basin towards their goal.

"By now you should know I don't eat or drink. How long have we been companions? My mind provides the sustenance for my body. But here, this may help with the heat."

Kythor digs around in his bag and pulls out a few jars of keep cool salve. He opens the first jar and begins to smear the ointment over his skin, posing special attention to his bare scalp. He offers a jar to each of his companions before donning his armor.

"I'm not sure what to expect when we get to the temple, but I have a feeling any thing in there will be unfriendly to say the least."

As they passed onwards into the desert, the steps of their undead beast of burden bringing them closer to the temple, the sand around them began to reflect the light in ever brighter and more painful ways, until at last they were forced to close their eyes to cope. And such a reflection of the light concentrated the heat upon them, pushing it to even hotter temperatures, but not quite enough to breach the precautions they had taken.

By now, they had approached to within a mile of the mesa upon which the temple rested, but the blinding of the sand would make identification of any features difficult.

Kythor curses the waste around him as he pulls out a leather band with two lenses of volcanic glass sewn into them. Affixing them over his eyes by tying the strap around his head, he deadens the glare off the sand. Figuring the wind might begin to pick up, he pulls his hood over his head and pulls a mask of cloth from his bag. Tying it in place, he takes a breath through the mask, and breathed easily. No sense leaving himself unprotected any longer.

Kythor closes his eyes and focuses his mind. He reached down and places a hand on his Psicrystal and unleashes his focus with a mental snap. A shimmering substance flickers into existence for a moment, choosing his hand and Psicrystal. Taking another moment, he focuses his mind again and prepares for whatever may come next.

Klau-Doth takes a couple of filled waterskins and days rations and puts them into his backpack, assuming that his giant mount is likely unable to fit within the ruins.

As they approach the temple, what catches their eye is the structure residing in front of the temple. There rested a rectangular basin constructed from alternating bands of black and white marble, holding a murky liquid covered in green and yellow scum. All of it combined to give off a cloying odor of rot. Two rows of four bone-white monoliths flanked the basin’s long sides, standing like acolytes in prayer. The surfaces facing the pool were smooth and featureless except for pits and cracks left by decades of desert winds and icy nights. The sides facing away from the pool, however, bear engravings of some kind, still indeterminate at this distance.

Once, this might have been a temple of elemental water, but neglect appears to have washed away the holiness this place once had. Although, to see such copious amounts of water deep in the Wastes is a miracle all on its own, so perhaps some of its religious power still remains...
