Legends of the Heroes / [Setting] Communist Zombies
« on: November 13, 2014, 06:00:52 AM »
I decided to put my own spin on a Necromancer and his plans of world domination with an undead army. Basically, the human nations of the world have the historic problems with slavery, imperialism, theocracy, monarchy, sexism, brutal discipline, etc. (Basically, the nastier aspects of the past that Romantics tend to overlook are there in full force.) Meanwhile, the Necromancer is legitimately trying to bring about a better society, except that he's willing to commit untold atrocities in order to do so.

No matter which side the PCs choose, they will witness atrocities occur and have to deal with their side being the lesser of two evils. Whether they choose to resign themselves to it, or fight against it, is up to them. There is a certain irony to the party being recruited for a war against a necromancer's rebellion, only to rebel themselves after the fighting has settled down.

Legends of the Heroes / Help make a marshal
« on: November 11, 2014, 07:20:27 AM »

"I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wher ever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat."
Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt

This is roughly how a commissar behaves.

Commissioner Holt
Male Human Marshal
Level 7, Init +6, HP 57/57, Speed 20
AC 22, Touch 15, Flat-footed 20, Fort +9, Ref +5, Will +6, Base Attack Bonus +5
+1 Longsword +8 (1d8+3, 19-20, x2)
+1 strength rating Composite Longbow (100) +8 (1d8+1, x3)
+1 Mithril Chain Shirt, Masterwork Heavy Shield (+5 Armor, +2 Shield, +2 Dex, +1 Deflect, +2 Misc)
Abilities Str 14, Dex 14, Con 16, Int 12, Wis 10, Cha 19
Condition Angry

How can I make this guy the terrifying backbone of an army? I'm still not quite sure what would make for a mechanically effective Marshal. He's an NPC for a mostly 3.5 game, but whose skill and feat system is inspired by Pathfinder.

Off Topic Fun / Feinstein - Congress may act on violent videogames
« on: April 05, 2013, 03:25:19 AM »
I thought I had seen the last of this nonsense when Jack Thompson faded from the scene, but then the NRA dredged it up again after Sandy Hook, and now Senator Feinstein seems to have latched onto it as well.

Quote
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Wednesday that Congress may be forced to take action to limit video game violence.

Speaking to an audience of around 500 in San Francisco, Feinstein, who led the charge in the Senate on an assault weapons ban, said the video game industry should take voluntary steps to make sure it does not glorify guns in the wake of the December mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. She added that if the industry does not, Congress is prepared to take action, according to the Associated Press.

Feinstein said that video games play, "a very negative role for young people, and the industry ought to take note of that."

"If Sandy Hook doesn't do it ... then maybe we have to proceed, but that is in the future," she added.

The California Democrat is the latest to add her voice to a chorus of lawmakers, including many Republicans, who have connected violence in video games to gun violence.

In January, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) told MSNBC's Chuck Todd that he believes "video games is a bigger problem than guns, because video games affect people."

Tennessee Republican Rep. Diane Black attributed the Sandy Hook shooting to "unprecedented levels of violent games, music and so on," and Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) in December introduced a bill to study the impact of violent video games on children, one of Congress's first pieces of legislation related to the tragedy in Newtown. Former Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) also stated his support in December for a commission to study the effect of violent video games on mass shootings.

National Rifle Association CEO and executive vice president Wayne LaPierre was also quick to blame violent video games for the events at the Sandy Hook, after it was found that shooter Adam Lanza may have played video games like "Call of Duty" and "Starcraft."

Nearly 30 years of studies have shown that there is scant evidence to support the claim that violent video games influence real-life violence, dating back to the first major violent video game study in 1984. Critics argue such attempts to correlate the two are little more than scapegoating video games in order to avoid getting to the root of gun violence.

General D&D Discussion / How to DM for a party without trapfinding?

I am going to run into a problem very shortly that involves a dungeoncrawl and a party without trapfinding. Any suggestions? I suppose removing the traps and alarms is a thing, but that just feels... cheap.

Min/Max 3.x / Reliably triggering Explosive Runes
« on: December 17, 2012, 12:22:07 AM »
Here's a method for triggering Explosive Runes reliably.

Have one person Arcane Mastery so he can take 10 on caster level checks. He can then cast Erase and Dispel Magic at the minimum caster level necessary and guarantee a low roll. This allows these spells to be cast on Explosive Runes and trigger them.

Does this work?

Last year, several friends of mine had a marathon gaming session for charity. In the words of one of the key members:
"Auntie Paladin is a marathon gaming event put on by the RPG club at UCI. We play tabletop roleplaying games for a period of time based on incremental donation amounts made on our behalf to the Child's Play charity. The entire event is Streamed live on the internet, and we make sure to try and interact with our viewers between games of all sorts. Last year was our first run at it, and it was met with serious sucess, wherein we raised over $5,500, and played for 112 hours continuously."

This year they are doing it again, and I will likely participate, so I thought I'd spread the news.

Fistbeard Beardfist and the Fountain of Unlikely Chance

Devil Dogs

Who is Fistbeard Beardfist?

Fistbeard Beardfist is the alias of a great dwarf warrior of the Iron Fathers clan, whose exploits have become legend in his own time. Being a dwarf among dwarves, it was only natural that he would become a Deepwarden upon reaching adulthood, where he quickly rose up the ranks to become one of their best warriors due to his proficiency drinking and in beard based combat.

Unfortunately, due to a falling out with the Deepwarden commander, he found himself assigned to the most unpleasant posting imaginable to a Dwarf: liaison to the elves of Isteroth glade.

Due to his quasi-exile to the surface, Fistbeard has had the opportunity to participate in more adventures than the vast majority of his kin, starting off with the Dragon of the Witchwood Incident, and culminating in the epic Search for the Star of Tomorrow.

His life's story is contained in an autobiography in the Iron Father's clan archives, and is currently being made into a ballad by the kobold adventuring band and musical sensation Dragonforce.

Min/Max 3.x / Build idea: Chameleon and Master of Masks
« on: October 29, 2012, 05:00:26 PM »
I am interested in making a Chameleon/Master of Masks build.

It will likely have three levels of Rogue, two of Ranger, ten of Chameleon, and five of Master of Masks.

Are there enough class features in Master of Masks beyond the Gladiator Masks to justify 4 more levels in it, even if Chameleon is carrying the build? What masks might be useful? I can imagine that the Archmage masks could be useful for Chameleon casting, Assassin for a bit more sneak attack, Faceless for improving will saves, and Jester's... well, that'd be mostly for style.

Mask Specialist could be used with
*Mask of Lies (MiC 115, 4,500gp) Provides continuous Undetectable Alignment, a +5 to Bluff checks, and the ability to use Disguise Self three times per day.
*Raptor's Mask (MiC 210, 3500gp) +5 unnamed bonus to spot, plus immunity to being blinded and dazzled.

That's all I have so far.

Gaming Advice / Fey Presence - how to calculate saving throw DC
« on: August 28, 2012, 01:39:00 PM »
The Fey Presence feats grant you several spell-like abilities. How does one calculate the saving throw DC for these abilities? My gut says that it is based off of Cha, but I'd like a second opinion.

Here is Black Jack Wellesley, the Pirate King. What equipment would you suggest for him? (Please list sources and cost).

I'm thinking a pair of short swords and some armor are the most important things. Gloves of the Balanced Hand for ITWF are a given, of course. Will probably get a Ghost Shroud (upgraded to +5 deflection bonus) for dealing with incoporeals.

General D&D Discussion / Warlocks are too anime and overpowered
« on: August 10, 2012, 01:30:29 AM »
I'm so sick of people bringing the Warlock into my games. It's too much anime inspired munchkinry for my taste and detracts from my Dungeons and Dragons experience.

The first ability a Warlock gets is his Eldritch Blast, which can be spammed ALL DAY LONG as a RANGED TOUCH ATTACK for 1d6 per TWO LEVELS! As if that wasn't bad enough, he can make attacks out to 250 feet with one blast shape invocation. Since Warlock abilities are inherited, that means the Warlock can be a little girl flying about in the air and blasting people. It's like watching Sailor Moon in action, it really is. I can almost hear a Warlock saying "In the name of the moon, I shall punish you!" every time an Eldritch Blast is used.   :shakefist

And that's not all; their class abilities come straight out of anime as well.

Warlocks get Damage Reduction, Energy Resistance and a limited Fast Healing ability. Wow, the ability to ignore damage taken and heal from injuries quickly? It comes up so often in anime that I bleach my brain at the thought.  :banghead

UMD related skills, the ability to craft items as if they were real magic users? I guess that makes the Warlock into some sort of Dark Magician Girl.  :banghead :banghead

Prestige Classes? There's a prestige class for warlocks, alright. It's called Hellfire Warlock and its primary benifit is to be able to Kamehameha things to death.  :banghead :banghead :banghead

Invocations? Let's see what those give you.

Fell Flight lets you fly all day long. Gee, I wonder where I've seen characters flying all day long before? Maybe it was the same anime that had people who could use Flee the Scene at will, the power that lets you teleport away and leave a major image of yourself behind to distract opponents. These abilities are so totally ripped off of Dragonball Z (ever watch the first fight between Goku and Vegeta?) that it's not even funny.    >:(

Spiderwalk lets you run up walls and do the kind of acrobatic you only see in wuxia inspired stuff like Ranma and the Matrix. (Seriously, who else moves on walls like a spider, man?)   :rolleyes

Crawling Eye, for instance, detatches your eyeball and lets it go around spying for you, which is exactly what Naruto's Gaara of the Sand does in the written Chunin Exam (1:16). Come on, this one's so blatantly anime that I can't believe no one else has picked up on it yet.  :rolleyes :rolleyes

Finally, they get the invocation Chilling Tentacles, and we all know what inspired those:rolleyes :rolleyes :rolleyes

I don't have time to go through the others in a systematic fashion, but my first impressions were that they were too anime and I'm sure everything else is as well because that is a reasonable generalization, like how most wizard spells are blasting spells.

In short, I hate warlocks because their flavor and power level does not fit in with my medieval European inspired fantasy world with kung-fu monks.
