D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Simple question
« on: May 23, 2019, 04:51:15 AM »
The post mentioned Sword of the Arcane Order, so I assume 3.5 instead of PF. In that case the question is surprisingly hard. Only option I can find for Detect Magic or Arcane Sight that isn't a random power tacked onto something expensive (Thurible of Divining) is as a power option for intelligent magic items. There's the Insightful feat in Complete Arcane that gives it (+Read Magic and Detect Secret Doors) 1/day as a SLA. Alternately at high levels (11+) you can take Magic Sensitivity from Complete Magic to have it always on

Intelligent magic items are an amazingly-good investment for other reasons (i.e. breaking the action economy), so this would ordinarily be a perfect solution. There's just one snag - unless you're really going balls-deep on being able to buy anything, there's no way* to get an intelligent item with a specific special ability. Crafting intelligent items produces random abilities, so you can't reliably craft or commission it.

*There is actually one way - Item Familiar. However, it's variant rules and a notorious feat in general.

Step 2 is almost always go out on a PHB2 Rebuild Quest, to knock of (in this case) five horribly picked levels, for 5 more of the good stuff.
Here-in lies a curious point :   why the hells+gehenna would a level 16 wizard not pick the level 17 of wizard?  Why mister anderson WHY ?!

You're forgetting that this is an NPC and not a PC. ECL doesn't matter*; CR does. In this case, knocking off those five levels of the template classes would only reduce CR by 3, not 5, so to keep her at the same CR you could only add 3 wizard levels. Also, it would knock off lich rejuvenation, which the DM probably wants to keep because it's kinda the defining feature of liches.

*Depending on which source you take, it might affect their treasure, but that's all.

Handbooks / Re: [WIP] List of epic classes/PrCs by feat progression
« on: April 21, 2019, 05:36:36 AM »
Okay, I've skimmed all Dragons that could have Epic content (297 through 363) and found basically just the Epic Binder. I've also added the Incarnum classes.

So, to recap, these are the sources of Epic classes I've found and included:

Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (obsolete and superseded by Epic Level Handbook)
Epic Level Handbook (updated to 3.5 in 3.5 update booklet)
Races of Faerun
Various Epic Insights (superseded by Epic Insights Compilation)
Dragon Magazine #297
Dragon Magazine #308

---3rd -> 3.5 edition change---

3.5 update booklet
Epic Insights Compilation
Expanded Psionics Handbook
Complete Adventurer
Complete Arcane
Complete Divine
Complete Psionic
Complete Warrior
Magic of Incarnum
Forgotten Realms: Player's Guide to Faerun
Epic Insights: Epic Ghostwalk (July 4; I'm not 100% sure but I think this is 3.5 territory)
Epic Insights: Epic Races of Faerun
Epic Insights: Epic Swordfighters
Epic Insights: Epic Shapechangers
Epic Insights: Epic Miniatures Handbook
Epic Insights: Epic Warlock Feats
Dragon Magazine #339
Dragon Magazine #363

If anybody has any corrections or additions to this list, please come forward. I'll be asking for this to be moved in a couple of days.

Am I reading this right?
https://dndtools.net/feats/secrets-of-sarlona--14/quori-dread--2347/
with
http://therafimrpg.wikidot.com/imperious-command

By RAW a Kalastar can auto-1v1 anything not immune to fear if they spend a move action each round?

It's a stretch, because Imperious Command is clearly referring to the "Demoralise Opponent" use of the Intimidate skill. I suppose if you say demoralising is demoralising, it'd work.

Also, Imperious Command is relatively cheesy to begin with, particularly when combined with Fearsome from the same book.

Okay, so I just happened across Ordained Champion's and Spellsword's Channel Spell. Now, before you tell me that these and the abuses are known, or that Ordained Champion got errata-nerfed, I searched the forum and the specific issue I found is not mentioned.

Specifically... you don't cast the spell. You channel it into your weapon, spending the spell slot ("as if you had cast the spell"), and then you poke something with the weapon and it goes off. This bypasses material and XP components.

Ordained Champion's errata-nerf does cut down on the abuses of this, since most cleric spells with material and XP components have long casting times, but it doesn't remove it entirely.

I just realised that Illumian power sigils work in Wild Shape. Aeshkrau makes bonus spells go off Str. Holy crap.

I mean, it doesn't hit save DCs or required-stat, so it doesn't actually change the way Druid optimises, it's just a giant pile of extra bonus spells.

Aeshkrau Illumian is worth a mention as a good race. Basically an extra bonus spell at each level, if not more.

Handbooks / Re: Shadowcraft Mage Handbook

Wonderful read. Did notice a small error in your iconic shadow craft mage build. The listed feat path you have doesn't work because Gnome Illusionist Substitution does not gain the bonus feat at 5th level (ie. No heighten spell at that level)  unless you can elect not to take the substitution ability somehow.

Racial substitution levels are independent of one another.

Quote from: RoS p146
A character need not take all the substitution levels provided
for a class. For instance, a goliath barbarian might
decide to take only the racial substitution level at 7th level,
ignoring the previous substitution levels.

Maybe : just Uncanny Trickster and Legacy Champion, and a hypothetical Epic Ollam prog ?
The epic Ollam prog is "N/A". Only PrCs that are at least ten levels long can have epic progressions.

Two castings of Reverse Gravity?

Even that probably wouldn't be enough with only CL 20. The Leviathan was updated to 3.5, but its size wasn't changed - it's technically still 50x200. If you assume it's of a similar height to its width... that's 500 10-ft. cubes. You won't need the full 500 cubes affected to lift it, since the weight of the reversed parts is opposing the weight of the normal parts and the waterspout will also create a current, but you'll need a decent chunk of that. Maybe 100-200? And then there's the aforementioned issues with swimming off the waterspout. If you've got the insane caster levels needed to pitch the thing into the sky... why not just fry it with Wings of Flurry or a godslaying Holy Word or something? Or heck, even Dominate Monster; its Will save isn't that great and if you've got a cheesed CL its SR is irrelevant.

I'm not saying the dumb thing lives up to CR 25, but Reverse Gravity isn't the solution to this one.

what the heck does this mean?

Well, usually a cleric's caster level = their class level, so it would seem that the Ollam gets cleric casting equal to a cleric with one less level than the Ollam has Ollam levels. Interestingly, it seems to be 4/5 in that case, although this still isn't anywhere near good.

I mean, yes, "her" is imprecise, but it's pretty obvious that "her" is the Ollam and not the hypothetical cleric.

Royal Defiler mentions you need to be a defiler. From what I can gather it deals with being an Arcane Spellcaster of sorts, but I am not sure if it is a specific class, a status Arcane casters can obtain with some feat or other prestige class, or just a general label for Arcane casters in general?

In Dark Sun, arcane magic draws power from the life energy of Athas. Good people generally try to avoid taking too much, and are called "preservers". Evil people draw all they can for extra power, which has a bunch of cool mechanical effects (free metamagic, re-using slots) but kills all the nonsentient life in the vicinity - for decades to centuries. Athas is largely a wasteland in the current era because there are actually quite a few evil people around, and defiling adds up fast.

Dragon 315 has rules for preserving/defiling magic, and 319 has a Dark Sun player's handbook (Dungeon 110 has a complementary Dark Sun DM's guide). Not sure whether that's reprinted/superseded by other 2nd-party Dark Sun material.

A CR25 Leviathan (Monster Manual II) was trivialized with one casting of reverse gravity.

You'd need a pretty high CL for that due to the Leviathan's size. And since RG on the surface of a body of water creates a waterspout, it could possibly swim off the top and fall back into the ocean (definitely can't swim directly down, though, since that's DC 80).

Heeeeey, remember the Talenta Sharrash from ECS, and how it got nerfed in errata because 19-20/x4 crit was kinda ridiculous?

It got reprinted in Dragon 331's article on polearms. Without the errata.

Dragon 328 has the Bard 4 spell Fugue of Tvash Prull. Medium-range, 30ft-spread save-or-suck with effects that scale based on your Perform check hitting each round. The nasty ones are "attacks nearest target" at DC 45 (presumably for the duration of the spell, which is concentration up to 1 round/level), Feeblemind at DC 55 and death at DC 60. Also, if they make the save they still get a -2 to attack rolls and skill checks.

Note that this is [Sonic], but not [Mind-Affecting] or [Death]. Weird, eat your heart out.

EDIT: Ah, it got whacked with the nerf-bat in Spell Compendium. You could make an argument that it doesn't override due to changing the spell name, but eh.

Wild Touch from Dragon 326 is one hell of a weird feat. 1/day, whenever a magic item requires a random roll or random draw from a deck, you can roll or draw twice and pick which one actually happens.

It seems to be intended for hacking Rods of Wonder, Warpswords and Decks of Many Things, but RAW it should work on damage rolls too. There's also prismatic effects, if you're so inclined.

Doesn't work on Olidammara's Dice, because they have an anti-tampering clause.

Requires a slashing weapon, so crossbow bolts are out unless they do that.  I seem to recall a netcutter variant or something along those lines.
I was mentioning it for Iaijutsu Focus in general, not specifically Whirling Blade.

The Compendia are full of weird shit. They imported HoH's fear stacking despite HoH not being intended for non-horror campaigns, and made a concerted effort to make Identify and item slots redundant but did it in a really roundabout way. Not sure if Baleful Polymorph's massive buff was imported from somewhere or a RC "innovation", but that's weird too.

Sunblade (EtCR): +1 Bastard Sword that counts as a light weapon and only needs short sword proficiency is worth 3000 GP.

It's called the Sunsword, and it's not quite that good. Without the bonding ritual, you can wield it with short sword proficiency, but it doesn't count as a light weapon (it doesn't have the magic words "wielded as if it were a short sword"). 700 gp for Weapon Familiarity is probably still too cheap, but it's not as egregious as if it were a light weapon.
