Metal Bard, help needed!
« on: July 05, 2013, 09:54:43 PM »
(I have no clue where else to put this, I need help with song selection.)
I am making a bard-like character for a game.
(Not D&D, but: he plays music, and things get easier for other people to do; he's a social master in a non-social game; he can work other, basic magics, but less than what the actual mage can do. Bard.)

I want him to be fluffed very heavily as a metal-head (or other very hard rock, I don't get too hung up on genre classifications). Yes, the game world is basically near to modern earth.

I don't know anywhere near enough metal, in part because I only like the stuff that is still melodic. Turisas and Manowar comes to mind.
Because so much of metal lacks melody, I don't listen to much, and that means I don't even know much of the stuff that still does have melody. Heck, Turisas I only know because of Questionable Content.

So, I need the help of others on these boards on finding good music for this guy to play.

Cannot go wrong with Iron Maiden.

Simply cannot.

AC/DC is more on the side of classic rock, it's also very good stuff. Highway to Hell is so damn iconic, it just BREATHES rock.

Right, I've got some Iron Maiden, Manowar, Turisas, and BOC (just 'Reaper', which segues into Hymn Of The Immortal Warriors when he uses his resurrection ability). Also, the soundtrack to the movie Heavy Metal.

I need more, and I'd like to know more modern stuff.

Also, I'm looking for some that go with some of his abilities.
A collection of 5-second guitar riffs for when he's putting on his 'Pyro show' (any enemies caught in said show are purely coincidental).
Something to play to pull someone out of what is basically Frenzied Berserker Frenzy. (IM: When The Wild Wind Blows is one, but I'd like to have a range of options for effects I'll use often.)

Basically, to put his abilities this way:
Inspire Confidence
DFI
Inspire Competence (Which is much more useful in this case, but still, boosting out of combat abilities)
Pyro show (basically, a 'Lesser Orb of Fire'... possibly several. Not much damage, but passable)
Rez.

Except the Rez, I'd like multiple tracks for each thing.

I have now listened to two songs apiece. Re-listening to Eternal Flames Of Metal.

Enter Sandman comes to mind if you just want sound clips. Because looking at this thread got that stuck in my head.

Going to be dealing with eldritch horrors? I know the exact right song for that. Ditto for anything along the lines of Dominate (alright, it's about drugs, but if you don't pay too much attention, Master of Puppets is perfect).

You are obliged to play Iron Man in lieu of anything else should you come across constructs. :p

Inspire Confidence:
As Blood Runs Black - The Brighter Side Of Suffering
Mortal Treason A Call to the Martyrs
Bruthal 6 - covers Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit
Marilyn Manson - The Fight Song

DFI:
dragonforce through the fire and flames
Dethklok - I Ejaculate Fire

Inspire Competence (Which is much more useful in this case, but still, boosting out of combat abilities):
Hatebreed - Perseverance
Black Sabbath(band) - Black Sabbath(song) - Black Sabbath(album)
Metallica - Master Of Puppets

Pyro show (basically, a 'Lesser Orb of Fire'... possibly several. Not much damage, but passable):
Flight of the Bumblebee at 1300 BPM (Skip ahead to about 6:30)
Rammstein - Ich tu dir weh (These guys are known for their pyro (at live shows))

Rez:
Mudvayne - Dig
White Zombie covers Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave

"pull someone out of what is basically Frenzied Berserker Frenzy."  (um hrm?)
Bert and Ernie
Vlad - Elektronik Supersonik
Aaralyn and Izzy "Zombie Skin"

Other recommendations, because i'm wating on my B-spec GT5 race to end and ya:
Dethklok- Awaken (MustaKrakish)
Slipknot - New Abortion
Static-X - I'm With Stupid
Nirvana - Tourette's

Edit: and one more

I seem to recall that Rammstein's singer is also a licensed pyrotechnician because of how much stuff they use. :lmao

That's a pretty cool list.  I've not listened to music like that for years.  If your party has a cleric I can't see them being too pleased when they hear the Marilyn Manson Fight song... :D

I can't believe I forgot Dragonforce.

Rammstein - Ich tu dir weh (These guys are known for their pyro (at live shows))
Yeah, I'm also using Engel as one of my "Pull them out of Frenzy" songs.

Dethklok- Awaken (MustaKrakish)
Slipknot - New Abortion
Static-X - I'm With Stupid
Nirvana - Tourette's
I liked the show when I watched it, but I don't really like Dethklock much due to the Nathan's lack of melody. These other three I actually listen to.
(Actually, the fist time I worked a Shotgun Suicide as an EMT, and the more experienced Medics wouldn't leave me alone about "Are you handling this okay?", failing to understand that I grew up with that stuff, I just started answering by singing Nirvana. I got through two albums because they just wouldn't stop asking and take a hint.)

Lordi, Tenacious D.
Here you will learn a lot about Rock and Metal. There's a lot of great songs, maybe some will be useful to you.

The Kitchen Sink Lord laid out a pretty solid list.
I'll add some of my favorites .... though, just generalities (i.e., just bands; not any specific songs):
- Cliff Burton era Metallica (yes, I'm a bit biased)
- Pantera
- Megadeth
- Disturbed (more punchy than melodic; but has some really good hooks/riffs)
- Mushroomhead
- anything featuring Rob Zombie
- Judas Priest
- Helloween (how's that for firing up the way-back machine  :cool)

And if you're really adventurous, try some prog-metal on for size.

A friend of mine wouldn't let me get away without mentioning Machine Head.

Can't see as how it helps your Bard, but I owe it to my friend to at least mention them. >_> <_<

Warrior's Call by Volbeat
Destroyer by Static X
Between the Hammer and the Anvil by Judas Priest

On the heavier side there's a small Austrlian band called Tomb of Doom. Massive difference between these guys' style and the above artists though.

Johnnys list was very decent.  I'm not a fan of the older Metal though.. such as Iron Maiden etc.

For some of the newer Metal I would highly suggest  Bring Me The Horizon this is one of there songs    very metal, and very epic.

they are also the only metal band I know of that actively takes there metal and turns into chilled out techno remixes. which is totally fcking awesome. perhaps even better then the original stuff. check it out HERE

As far as actual builds go, I just made a metal flavored bard the other day. Mine mixed with barbarian and rage mage though... trying to smash peoples faces while belting out awesome metal  :devil

Thank you very much guys. I think I have a pretty ample list now.
I think my favorite is going to be helping other people meditate / concentrate by playing Alestorm. (Seriously, 'Pirate Metal'?... What?  :thumb)
