Might be a bit much. I'd think a 1d6 with a 19-20/x3 crit

I actually thought of it, but I didn't want to step on the Pathfinder Falcata's toes.  So I took a mace/longsword, bumped up the damage a size, and added the boilerplate armor piercing I've been adding to non-simple homebrew maces I've been doing.

Incidentally how does that weapon work in the source material?  Did I get close?

Honestly you barely ever see Balin fight so I'd say just maybe swung like an axe but using some sword technique in the swings?

Based on the extra weight at the end it would indeed be swung more like an axe with a chopping motion.  Since it's double-edged it would still have certain sword techniques used for it.

All things considered I don't think that would be mechanically different enough from a regular D&D handaxe to warrant any stat changes.
