I doubt we could actually do this without a DM

Who's going to worldbuild?
Who's going to decide encounters?
(As mentioned before) Who's going to run all of the NPCs?

And at this point, whoever is doing those things is the DM

Well, I said that we could use a published setting, and since it's a sandbox the encounters would be decided by what the players do. But we really do need someone to run the NPCs, which is basically a DM. So I don't think we could do it either.

Anyway, I think the setting should probably be urban.

Any particular reason why urban?

I just think it would work better, though I could be persuaded otherwise.

Man, if I were any good at keeping games going I'd totally be down to run things for you guys. But, as my players know, I suck.  :(

I don't even care. We need a DM, this game can take minimal DM work and I've been wanting to play in a game you run...

I would've volunteered but I don't think anyone wants to deal with that sort of nightmare. :S

... all the NPC's would be really damn weird, for a start.

I'm not particularly sure about running NPCs either.

Though really damn weird isn't necessarily bad, Raineh =P

Combine really damn weird with 'I have no experience building NPC's' and you'd have a trivially easy campaign full of nutjobs. And your greatest threat would probably be some sort of brothel tycoon. :p

We could all collaborate on NPCs, we just need someone to run them.

Great, so our choices are between me, who has never DMed and would mess everything up, and someone cowering under a chair. This can only get worse. :lmao

Well, I certainly had some ideas for the basic premise from which the sandbox campaign would emerge. I like world-building and writing NPCs, though the quality thereof is not for me to judge.

I think my premise would start with the death of a tenured professor of the Sciences at a prestigious university, a small selection of his former pupils gathered as part of his Last Will and Testament. Only the students present, they are left with the final words of the professor, which instruct them about said professor's secret studies, his discovery and forays into Gramarie, and instructions on how to carry on his legacy by advancing his research into its applications. These students are, to their knowledge, the only ones in the world with knowledge of Gramarie (as SirPercival mentioned in his ideas), and must decide how best to fulfill the Professor's wishes to see Gramarie spread as far as any other science or art.

I foresee a world in which science is the major force, in a world where magic is largely forgotten and only stray mages roam or hide away as hermits or are written off as shysters and swindlers, small cults or sects practice magic in secret, etc. Similar to our world in many respects, there would be some friction between the world of science and religion, which would be seen as the only source of true magic and miracles by the faithful (and all others labelled as heretics).

Hell, if no one here likes that, I'll probably use it for something else in the future. :D

Bah, science and modern fantasy. Which means guns. Yay. Stupid things. >.<

Actually, probably no guns. Not a full modern fantasy. There would be magic, but it would generally be sold to the public as coming from one or more churches/Gods. Magic isn't dead, but a lot of people would be distrustful of anyone calling him/herself a Wizard or Sorcerer. And just because it's not trusted, doesn't mean magic isn't present. It's just not Forgotten Realms or Eberron-present.

It was just an idea, as well, and could be changed to suit the players' need for the campaign.

I hate realistic science in fantasy. Sorry. >.<

I mean... fine with magitech, and clockpunk, steampunk, and pretty much any other punk. Things set in the modern world? I suppose. But when you start introducing halfway realistic science into a fantasy world? Hate that. It's weird. :/

... also, I think it kinda ruins the fun of having the science of magic when there's science there already.

It sounds alright to me, but wondering what sort of tech level would the world be at? Perhaps it's not high enough to bother Raineh, making it a non-issue anyway? I mean we don't have guns yet so that dates it somewhat.

If it predates the scientific method, where discoveries are largely accidental, sharing your findings is considered bad, and the secrets of automata etc. are lost if the maker dies with no apprentices...

I want to introduce science to the masses, damn it. I SHALL BAMBOOZLE THEM WITH MAGIC SCIENCE. :p

The first base class is a magic science warlock. Oooh...

Sadly the second base class doesn't quite look like it'll work as we'd need a government or other big organization patron(quite a few abilities rely on them and given their effect for good reason it seems). I mean unless the DM is willing to provide us with one. Like maybe the prestigious university has a lot of land and students in need of work... And then the class would end in a military coup of the head of the university  :lmao
