"Eh?!" Lancer obliges, with an utterly dumbfounded expression, "Who're you, granny?"

As near as Lancer can tell, this appears to be nothing more than an old woman who performed a Taoist ritual so she had someone to carry her groceries, and of more immediate importance, an old woman smacking Lancer with her purse.

"Don't backtalk me! Now come along quickly or else they'll have run out of the good produce. You can't trust them, you know. They put dyes on the food so it looks better, that's why you have to shop when the sun's overhead. You can see the difference then." The old woman bends down, an act which takes the better portion of ten seconds, and taps her nose knowingly, face so close to Lancer's he can see every single wrinkle.

Completely bewildered, he hauls the bags along, looking around for some way to get out of this chore. This is the most frivolous, inspired use of magic ever, and he wished he'd thought of it before.

Laoise dignifies the questions for her brother with no answer other than a frown. When recess passes with no success on her search, she decides on an unorthodox approach. That is, skipping class.

She waits where she is, avoiding the notice of other students until she's sure that everyone else has headed to class, then moves back inside to find the restroom on the ground floor again. Once she's doublechecked that there is nobody in the hallway or the stalls, she hunkers down and begins her specialty ritual, concentrating on the connection between the traces of magic she sensed (but this time, going to some pain to avoid actually touching the floor with her hands). "Fire, illuminating everything..."

The old woman drags Lancer from stall to stall in the open air market, occasionally launching into half of a lecture on pesticides, price gouging, or subsistence farming completely unprovoked and drawing quite a few bewildered looks from the other shoppers. More than a few sympathetic glances are directed at Lancer, especially since for all intents and purposes he looks like a very young girl hauling around more bags than she should be physically able to carry.

As the elderly woman continues another tirade, this one about how all the bananas for sale were secretly plantains (except for the plantains, which were actually pears), Lancer's roving eyes catch sight of a cowboy hat moving through the crowd, and seconds later, the man Laoise described from yesterday's ritual comes into view. His outfit looks just as anachronistic, perhaps even more so today, as he seems to have adorned it with a duster and a red bandanna tied artfully around his neck. An impressive mustache tops the image off. The effect is rather striking, although completely out of place in Fuyuki.

Lancer can't see any weapons on the man, though if he's really a Servant, that's no indication that he doesn't have any. The man's eyes wander around as he drifts through the crowd, though not as though he were looking for something. He seems to be looking around just for its own sake, rather like a tourist, and indeed most of the passersby are treating him with that sort of good-natured amusement. As Lancer watches, a young girl runs up and tugs on the man's duster. "Can I have a picture with you, mister?" she pleads, and the cowboy's face splits into a smile. He plops his own hat onto the girl's head before lifting her onto his shoulders, beaming while the girl's father snaps a few photos.

Meanwhile, Laoise hastily conducts her detective ritual for the second time in two days, this time under pressure not only to finish before someone comes in, but also not to pick up any diseases from the floor. Once again, a lengthy span of time compressed into an instant rams itself into her brain before exploding into raw sensation.

A woman, tall and red-haired, standing at the sink and frowning thoughtfully at the ceiling. She bites her lip so hard she draws blood, and a tiny spatter of it lingers on the sink. Laoise doesn't recognize her - she's not a teacher, and her features are so solemn and angular that she'd surely have stuck in Laoise's memory somewhere.

The woman murmurs something that reverberates and echoes too much to be heard, and suddenly even Laoise's ritual can't pinpoint her exactly. Her position is inconstant, her face a shapeless blur, and her movements leave behind trails of where she was, will be, or maybe might have been. The only thing that stands out clearly is the blood on the sink.

The light shifts suddenly, hours passing in seconds until the late afternoon arrives. A gloved hand carefully scrapes the dried blood from the sink, catching the flecks in a tiny plastic bag.

Another shift in light. Today, just a few hours ago. Lucía stares into the mirror, hastily applying an unnecessarily thick coat of makeup to her face. Another girl comes in and Lucía jumps, knocking the container into the sink. A few hasty apologies later, all but a few smudges are left, and those smudges are what greet Laoise when she returns to her normal awareness with a dizzying rush. The door swings open and one of the older students walks in, giving Laoise a bemused look as she walks to the sink and begins washing her hands.

Laoise sways exaggeratedly and gets up, washing her own hands and making a show of splashing her face with cold water. Barring interference, she then exits the toilet and heads for the next one to hide out and think in until the period ends so she can return to class.

Lancer stops for a moment to stare at the cowboy. There seems no chance for a conflict here, but perhaps something could be learned from observation.

No one stops Laoise or harasses her on her way to the next toilet, but when she enters, she discovers Lucía in the process of washing her hands.

"Oh! Good, you're okay! I was worried when you didn't come back from lunch. Are you feeling well?" The new girl gazes at Laoise with concern.

Meanwhile, Lancer watches the cowboy set his young admirer back down and retrieve his hat, chatting with the girl's father. At this distance, Lancer might have been able to listen in, but the old woman who called him here is still going on about fruit, with the seller trying (fruitlessly) to get a word in edgewise. Ears full of complaints, he simply watches the other Servant shake hands and move on down the street, still strolling with the air of a sightseer.

Sighing at the relentless old lady, he looks to the heavens, wondering what exactly did he do to deserve this and hoping the old bitch would be done before long. He dare not work any magic to help speed things along, or the other Servant might notice this wasn't exactly a schoolgirl.

Laoise barely and poorly suppresses a small frustrated noise at walking in on yet another witness. She reflexively takes a step back, but unlike the the upperclassman, she can't exactly run away from this one. "No, I'm fine... I mean, yes..." Without thinking, she fidgets around with her left sleeve, pulling it down over the bandage, before making up her mind and striding towards one of the sinks to wash her right hand and her face... again.

After an agonizing walk back to the old woman's home laden with more food than even he could eat in a week, Lancer is finally turned loose, although not before he receives a pat on the head and a wrinkled envelope containing ten one thousand yen notes. She might not be pleasant company at all, but at least she seems grateful for the help.

Lucía continues washing her own hands, occasionally sneaking worried glances over at Laoise. After a little while, it dawns on both girls that they're waiting on each other. The new student finally moves to dry her hands, biting her lip all the while, then walks toward the door with forced casualness. She pauses with her hand on the handle, then asks, "Hey, if you're not busy after school, do you want to go get something to eat? I'm new and don't really know what's good, so I was hoping you could show me..."

Laoise's first thought is that she should just refuse. But saying no is hard. "...Okay." On the bright side, she can use this for covert scouting. There should be a restaurant near the Buddhist temple...

For now, the bigger challenge is getting back into class while attracting as little notice as possible. Laoise sighs internally, thinking she should have just skulked around the corridors until the bell rang.

Lancer sighs with relief once it was done, and the moment the old lady vanishes from view, he races back to complete the altar sanctification ritual.

Taking a moment to ensure that nobody was within hearing, Lancer expended a tiny bit of power to light the altar, then begins the chant to attune it to the energies of the school area. "Powers of Heaven and Earth. Obey the master of wind and fire. Bind the lightning and seal the rains within this cage. Submit to my authority by the right of Heaven."

Lucía's face lights up. "Great! I'll come get you after class then!" She heads out happily, leaving Laoise to follow at her own pace.

Slipping back into class isn't so hard, as it turns out. When she arrived, things might have been different, but with everyone's attention now focused on the more outgoing transfer student, Laoise makes it back to her seat without drawing more than a cursory glance from her teacher, who continues the lecture as though nothing had happened.

Atop the roof, the winds stir as Lancer speaks, swirling around his makeshift altar in response to his incantation. The clouds overhead rumble with thunder that only he can hear, and the altar pulses in time with the morning's rain. When the winds subside, he can feel the vitality of the sky flowing through the newly-created nexus of energy, bound to his desires.

Not too much later, the last bell rings, and Laoise is freed from her classes.

Laoise senses, not a moment too early, Lancer's immaterial presence by her ear, Work's done, and I saw our cowboy friend having fun with some brats in the streets.

Laoise starts involuntarily when Lancer approaches her and hisses, "Where were you?!" Then, she realizes she's still around people and goes off to find a corner where she won't get looked at funnily for talking to herself. "What happened? What do you mean, having fun?"

Had to take care of some business in town. If there was any danger you'd have called me back.

"It's not the school... at least tell me where you're going! What could be that important when you're a Servant?" Though she looks genuinely upset, Laoise's scolding quickly runs out of steam for want of more things to say. "...Anyway, the park's probably off limits today, so we might as well take a look at the temple."
