need ideas for politicians
« on: November 27, 2015, 12:04:00 PM »
I'm currently running a steampunk campaign on an island called Pallisland "The First Planned Island Community" the name is intentionally obtuse and hamfisted (the map is actually shaped like a castle with the main city at the top spire)
The focus of the campaign is the an election in three months time in game. This election was spurred by the untimely deaths of three out of the 6 members of the council. I already have an isolationist xenophobe but I want at least two more that I can play the party off of because one of my pc's plans on running, bless his heart.

Comrades, have you not had enough of corrupt politicians and feudal lords controlling your lives and livelihood? Let us reject their domination and seek to build a better world for ourselves! We must overthrow our indolent rulers and seize the means of production for ourselves; we the people, we who labor has produced so much. Let is take back what is rightfully ours! Viva la revolucion!

Or at least an anarcho-syndicalist commune.

The Mad Technocrat - Metropolis-style, because there's always one of those
The Necromonger - because zombies require less upkeep
The Luddite - because this technology is dehumanizing us
The Millionaire - because he's bought everything else
The Snake Cultists - because even though it never helps its just soooo fun
The Dragon - because dragons are always kewl
The Guildmaster of Thieves - because politicians rob you blind anyway
The Guildmaster of Assassins - because I'm afraid to vote against him
The Inquisition - because everyone expects it, what a thrill!

I think the word would be autocracy. Everything has a monarchy feel though, one of the members that died was the last in a line of council members. One of the members (the only permanent elven resident) has been there since the council's inception. I've been kicking the phrase "rolling coin economics" around and made it clear that the money is actually small cubes of iron made to look like precious metals.

Come to think of it, before we give advice someone should ask what kind of government/society exists now, and how many different pols do you need?

I believe the answers to your question are "autocratic oligarchy" and "at least 2."

This election was spurred by the untimely deaths of three out of the 6 members of the council. I already have an isolationist xenophobe but I want at least two more that I can play the party off of because one of my pc's plans on running, bless his heart.

The Pirate Party: their leader is a warrior and sailor who believes in the concept of free trade...meaning that merchant vessels should give up their cargo for the good of Pallisland's community, which he or she then distributes to the island's inhabitants in exchange for votes.

The Militant Imperialist (to counter the isolationist) and the Richest Guy in Town.

Being steampunk do you have Tinker Gnomes?  Perhaps one of them has accidentally awakened a Giant Space Hamster who hopes to run for office.

I'm thinking it's going to come up something like this
Obvious plant for outside government "sure I have my documents of citizenship right here"
The Automaton "yea I know he's made of gears but he makes some good points" is actually a gnome in the podium.
The militant isolationist "come together to root out the the foreign anarchist threat"
Friendly neighborhood cult leader "man his rallies are odd"
And a wild card yet to be determined.
