build optimization questions
« on: February 19, 2015, 04:13:10 PM »
Hi there, I was wondering if I followed the rules correctly, in order to create the following build..
sorc 16/ fighter 2/ warlock 2, max CHA for the eldritch blast, and taking the fighter lvls just for the action surge ability
The idea is using the eldritch blast (4 rays), then using the quickened spell metamagic from sorcerer class to cast 1 additional eldritch blast ( 4 rays), and then using the action surge for fighter cast 1 additional eldritch blast (another 4 rays), so you will be able to cast 3 eldritch blast in 1 round( 12 rays), and then 2 (8 rays)for the following 7 rounds, the lvl 2 warlock allows you to add the agonizing blast invocation, and you can choose hex spell for the warlock class... the possible damage for each ray should be 1d10+5 (cha)+1d6 = 15 average per ray
If the build does not violate any rule, I think is a pretty nasty combo, please reply with some rules that I miss or some extra modifications to improve this build

I'll see if it breaks a rule, not sure.

But choose Repelling Blast as your other invocation. Potential 120' push is ridiculous, and you can split it up for each ray.

I'm afb, but I think that's right.
And it's a decent combo in general, not just for the nova'ing.

Some of this was covered back at this wotc Assassin (not the class) thread.
http://community.wizards.com/forum/player-help/threads/4149876

Sorc + Lock got lots of play early on.
Warlock 3 is a decent possibility with Sorc 17 or Fighter 2 / Sorc 15.
iirc Fighter 2 / RogAss 3 / then some combo of Sorc+Lock , goes about the same.

I was thinking in choosing the invocation that allows you to see in darkness(magical and non-magical), so with the sorcerer spells you can create darkness and have some advantage

Or just choose a race with darkvision.

This, for pushing darkvision into a 1 mile radius:

With PC attacks.

This for pushing sensor radius into 10+ kilometer range, with attacks. This post and the one under it:

Arrgh! The birds, the birds.

Any further questions?

remember that the racial darkvision, or the one provided by the spell or items, does not allows you to see in magical darkness..thats why this invocation is better

If it's a darkness mage build, fair enough. Vision advantage is nice. Not so nice for other party members, but whatever. It's your positive vacuum state (most high level builds are, just so you can plan that advantage in on the build. There are light making spells though. Doesn't give you disadvantage, but it's not as though the light-thing is all a caster can do).

Don't forget you will need 13 str or dex for fighter multiclass.

You may want to consider your 1st level class in terms of which saving throws you gain proficiency in.

Does Darkvision work for something like Darkness?  I think you'd have to take something like Devil's Sight (Warlock Invocation) to see in Darkness.  But if you're taking Warlock you can dump darkness for something like Hunger of Hadar and get some decent AoE control and damage.

Cast Hunger then use repelling blasts to push enemies into the AoE.  You can still target them with Devil's Sight even though they're in the dark and if you took something like magic initiate which lets you get extra cantrips you can use something like Ray of Frost to keep them in the field and keep them taking damage.

There's a ~5 paragraph thingy on Lightly Obscured vision (status?) in the PHB.
Darkvision would get rid of that problem out to the darkvision limits, but not beyond.

The trick with Barb 6 Eagle, is you can see 1 mile like you do at 100'.
So then you dumpster dive (ha not so much) for ways to have
100'+ vision first then apply that ability.  Now stuff more abilities on it.

Devil's Sight works in Magical Darkness to 120'.  OK there's not much
to the difference between Regular Darkness and Magical Darkness.
But they've written it; presumably they'll further distinguish these at some point.

Observant feat lets you read lips, combined at 1 mile.  And it's always on.
Comprehend Languages spell/ritual or custom item, seals the deal.

Absolutely.

I think Fighter is your best bet as a first class. Getting heavy armor and CON saves is a huge boost.

Shoot for a 15 STR so you can wear plate later.
Dwarf FTW.

Replace the word "Warlock" with "Sorcerer" giving you an 18 levels into Sorcerer, and you've got yourself a Magic Missile Auto-Turret.
L9 Magic Missile shoots 11 shots. You quicken a Magic Missile, giving you 11+10 Magic Missiles. That's 21d4+21 damage. Do your fighter thing; Shoot another 9+8 Magic Missiles.
You just shot 21+17=38 Magic Missiles in 1 turn. Congrats, you just made the enemy play Touhou.

You illustrate my complaint about most capstone class abilities.
2 levels of Fighter for the action surge is most often better (should you meet the multiclass prereqs)

When you cast a bonus action spell, you're done casting spells other than cantrips for the turn according to page 202.

e: also action surge doesn't give you a 2nd bonus action

.-. I didn't read.
Well, then. I guess actually the 16 Lock/2 Sorc/2 Fighter caster build is one of the best builds we have to date, I believe.
12d10 damage, probably plus CHA mod which is probably five, so it's actually 12d10+24, with that 120' knockback.

So fire both, think of it like firing the gatlinger and the cannon at the same time.
