Title: OOC Discussion
Post by: sirpercival on November 07, 2011, 10:02:58 AM
Here we go!  I'll be starting up the campaign thread again shortly.

EDIT: Campaign thread is up.  If anyone needs a reminder on what they've done or what information they have, let me know (or check the board at BG, it's still there).

Some of us had left to go to the stables to return the horse and get some information out of the stablemaster.

Actually, no -- you guys had gone outside the inn to gather together and do those things, but no one had actually left yet (it was next order of business). :)

btw guys feel free to keep boon in check, he gets a little jumpy some times.... chaotic neutral ftw! :D))
I thought about trying to intimidate them with Legion, but it seemed more with Legion's temperament and alignment to try to just smooth it over. Besides, I thought Boon would probably do it anyway.  :P We can do the whole "good cop, bad cop" thing. Maybe I should have kept Diplomacy with Naberius... since we already have someone specialized in Intimidate....

I guess we should try to find out where the stone actually came from? Then go there?  :plotting

It probably came from one of the locations at the map pins. Odds are, the other stones are at those other locations. Now... whether finding and assembling all of these stones is something we want to do is another question... Maybe we should find out what the hell they are first?  :huh

What Kyle was thinking exactly.

We're starting to get some more hints, now it's time to start unravelling this mystery!

Don't be silly, they couldn't possibly anything other than a plot point. Like awakening a long forgotten evil, that we will have to quest to destroy, as is in our destiny. Or something like that. I mean, why else would a holy man be looking for it, right?  :D
Title: Re: OOC Discussion

Sounds good. Boon isn't really a deep thinker though. So unless some one needs a good intimidating, he will probably stay out of the way and let you smart guys solve it :D

Just to let you guys know, I'm not in the business of railroading.  The quest is there should you choose to pursue it, but if you want to go off and explore the world and do other things, then go for it.  :)

Yeah, I think doing a little research sounds good. We can also poke around town more, maybe with Legion disguising himself as the dead guy some more, to see if anything else falls out (maybe someone else who knows him will show up... hopefully not someone else he owes money too, though... :P ).

Anyone know what's up w/ CrazyBS?  He hasn't posted here at all, did he make the transition to the new site?

Also, what about ImperatorK?  No posts since the character sheet one...

CrazyBS is a IRL friend of mine. Currently he is swamped with work situations, he probably will not have the time to play. :(

Does anyone have an issue with me bringing in a DMPC, so I can test out one of my homebrew classes?

Or, I suppose I could recruit another player to try it out... *goes off to find Garryl*

OK guys, I'm officially bringing Garryl in as a new player -- he's going to be playing a Ritualist (my homebrew class).  I'll be introducing him shortly... hope nobody minds!  :)

I'm not sure. I don't think it has come up at all actually... I can only assume I am still holding it. Though I do remember Flays character looking at it. So I'm not sure. I'm open to either possibility

It was actually left on a table, so probably Kara or Boon. Since Kara was trying to be inconspicuous and carrying a rock half your size decidedly isn't, it would be Boon.

I was waiting for dna (Boon) to react to your reckless actions while I puzzle out how I'm going to react to your reckless actions.

I'm conflicted on how to act right now. I think I'll go with curiosity, following you back to wherever you're going, then asking for an explanation there. Think that'll work out?

OK... so I know we JUST added a new player.  However, one of my players from last time I ran Augury just recently joined the site, noticed I was running... and asked to reprise his character.  His party didn't get very far into the story, so there's no real problem with metagaming (and I wouldn't be bringing him in immediately anyway).

Thoughts?  His character was an anthropomorphic ermine warblade from above the snow line.  He's an excellent player.

For the trip, I'll be binding the Green Lady, and probably picking either Identify or Repair Light Damage for the SLA, depending on if anyone else can ID things or not...

For his initial speaking role, I threw together some flowery sounding jibberish to represent the fact that Nora'Luuu does not speak Common. This will probably not be the case if there is a translator in the party.

Though, wild gestures and such can always be used :)

I am SOOO going to have to use something like this as an adventure in a campaign, now... Imagine how much hatred this could inspire from the PCs?

Don't forget to have the Dwarven traveling merchant cart near the end of the campaign.

"RUNESTONES! GET YOUR RUNESTONES! KEYSTONES! FLAGSTONES!" and his cart is filled with cheap, imitation runestones exactly like the ones the party is looking for.

<player> BUT... these runes... they.... they....
<Dwarf> Not bad, eh. My boy took a fall last spring, and his arm has this twitch. So I gave him a paintbrush and voila, instant runestones!

I used the head of vecna in a game. I planted little clues for weeks, and I even made a ear of vecna haha. long story short, one greedy greedy PC paid one of the other players to cut his head off and put the vecna one on.
it was pretty funny  :P

Definitely a "pop", but you can only use it when being chased around a mulberry bush by a monkey.

What are we waiting for here?  Are you waiting for me to do something?  I was waiting for actions from folks...

Surprise round is done, right?

So:

INITIATIVE ORDER
22   enemy B
>>20   willow
>>20   boon
>>20   legion
>>15   isaac
>>13   snowy
13   enemy C
12   kara
12   sorrel
8   enemy A

Enemy B is up then, followed by the five mentioned?  As for me, I normally don't care about posting my action out of order...but I have five players and two monsters ahead of me, so I'm waiting for at least half of those to act to give me a general idea on which one I should go after (most likely Boon's target of choice).

Legion took 10, but Willow only too 7. So you're still up and about with 2 HP. And with the healing, you should be at full hp and with 3 nonlethal damage. Legion has 5 nonlethal. It goes away at 1 damage/level per hour (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/injuryandDeath.htm#nonlethalDamage), no rest required it seems. Pretty convenient.

I thought we stuck around searching while Garryl healed us, then moved.

Or do you mean are we searching the new area (presumably for traps) as/before we move into it? If the latter... at our level, we're not likely to find traps via Search anyway. So maybe we should just send the beefiest, least injured guy first. :P

Or heck... we could use summons, if we run into a trap-filled area. I could bind the Green Lady for SM1, to spam monkeys... (no, I don't mean spank monkeys)

My first reaction is to go bear hug the mushroom (WITH FIRE) till it stops shrieking, but I'm not sure if that's what Legion's reaction would be...

This whole thing reminds me of an old "Deep thoughts with Jack Handy" skit from SNL. It went something like this:

"If trees screamed, would we still be so eager to chop them down?

Maybe... if they screamed all the time."

Does anyone have any suggestions or preferences for rituals I should charge? With Circle of Good Hope, I can share one of them (two if I charge CoGH twice) with people within 10 feet. They only last 2 rounds, though. I have access to all the Minor rituals from the Ritualist (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1695.0;msg=16406) and General (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=1693.0;msg=16392) lists. Some of the stand-outs for combat are Ritual of Intuition (+1 on a roll 1/round), Ritual Boost (+2 enhancement to an ability score), Ritual Combat (+2 competence to either melee or ranged attack and damage rolls), and Ritual of Protection (DR 2/- and resist energy 2), although I'm probably missing some. There's plenty of utility on the list, too, although it's easy to switch out of combat.

I'm currently walking around with the following:
(click to show/hide)

Zone of Calm isn't too useful in this environment, so I was thinking of trading it out for something else, anyways. I just haven't decided what.

If we can ready actions (not sure if we're "in combat"), Legion will ready an action to breathe on any hostiles that come within range of his breath (which is only 5 feet, so...).

Welcome back! Certainly Gilgrim could be a help :)

I'm still waiting for Willow's init, so if zook doesn't post by tomorrow I'll just go on without him.

Alright, I've trolled through the story thus far.  I'll post tomorrow afternoon for character and possible roleplaying on where I was and how I showed up :)

Very little has actually happened since I last was with the party.  (3 months and only ONE location change?!)  So it could be that I was just FORGOTTEN cruelly after passing out in a drunken stuper.  I have only just finished catching up after talking to everyone in town if they have seen my group.   Widdle directed me in the right direction toward the cave.  Any thoughts?

Little did you know that these centipedes have magical pincers that impart arcane knowledge -- kind of like an anti-illithid savant.

A pity Kara is too flat-chested (Charisma 10) to learn sorcerer casting or even spell-like abilities. Though a (weaker) version of Beguiler casting would be interesting...

Edit: Since there's folks in front of me you can technically apply soft cover (+4 AC) which will make up for it being flat-footed (no Dex). And yes, DR is the easiest way to keep an optimal thrower in check. ;)

True, that's where sorceresses keep their arcane power.

Though, for a few thousand gold Kara could buy a set of Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mammories, which should boost her Charisma enough to qualify.

Sorry. Can't believe I missed that. Going after the close one - it's in melee with the front-liners, right? So 10 ft in front of Kara? If further, range penalties apply.

And this is why I love Halfling throwers. Dex bonus, size bonus, racial bonus, weapon focus and Point Blank Shot...:)

Since editing posts is fun, except when there are rolls in them, would it be alright to have a separate thread here just for rolling? We can link to the individual posts where we rolled, and won't need to worry about editing our rolls. All the convenience of Invisible Castle, but together in the same space and without having to go to a different site. Although at the point where you have to start linking from one post to another, I'm not sure it's worth the effort. /shrug, food for thought.

You enter through a plot hole and come up in another campaign. The environment seems to be fantasy-future, and people's names appear above their heads. You hear something about a war among stars, and how old the republic is. Roads continue to the west, north and east. The plothole is to the south.

So we're down to Phae, Garryl, Shiki, Sable, Flay, and SDK, correct?

Sorrel had identified these things earlier as Violet Fungi.

Yes, but I don't think he told Nora'Luuu that. Come to think of it, what if Nora'Luuu is mildly colorblind, and can't see the color Violet? Then it'd be a sensitive topic for him, huh. Never thought of that, did you? What if he's really insecure because he can't tell Violet Fungi from Grey Fungi, and one of them is really delicious and the other isn't? Now what, Mister Condescending GM?

Totally kidding, though I don't think his identification of the fungus was ever vocalized. That, and Nora'Luuu doesn't know that Violet Fungi are filled with a deadly neurotoxin. :)

Any rules to know about leveling up? Such as HP and the like?

Also, would it be possible for me to shuffle my feats around a bit? Specifically, moving Extra Charge into my bonus feat slot for Ritualist 2 so I can take something else in the level 1 slot (probably Quicken Ritual, but I need to look at the ritual feats again anyways). As it turns out, you can only get Ritual feats (not even Metaritual feats).
Title: Re: OOC Discussion

3. What are those?

Title: Re: OOC Discussion

Any suggestions on the languages thing? I'm used to languages being something you write on your character sheet, but that don't matter except in corner cases of roleplay because everyone speaks Common and there are so many other languages that if someone speaks something else, you still probably don't understand it. Of course, now we have someone in the party who only speaks Sylvan, so knowing a specific language is relevant again. But, language selection is a character creation thing and I don't want to retroactively metagame. On the other hand, I wind up reading Nora'Luuu's Sylvan spoilers anyways, so metagaming there. On the other other hand, I never act on it so does it even matter? Oh, hey, it's just a game, so probably not.

Anyways, feel free to ignore my neuroses.

Not perfectly. You left the second 'o' in "look" on the first tablet.

Anyways, decoding the new tablet during lunch.

Very close :) The only thing you missed you couldn't have known, because it has words breaking oddly across lines.  I'll give you the official version when someone casts Comp Lang.

Speaking of which, you guys don't have a spellcaster anymore... but Sorrel can take 5min and get the Least Ritual of Speech.

Legion still has 1st level spells (in semi-limited supply) when binding the Green Lady. That's how the first Comp Lang got cast, if I remember correctly. And I'm still 2 levels away from least rituals, so unless you feel like tossing us 5000 experience points apiece (didn't think so), all I have is an effectively +9 or +10 Decipher Script modifier.

Oh jeez, I forgot that you don't start with Leasts.  Lol last ritual class I looked at was Ritual Mage which gets them at 1st... because it's a prestige class.  Duh.

And yes, Legion gets a single 1st-level spell.  And I guess Isaac is kind of a caster.  But you guys have no tier 1 classes anymore, which is unusual for my games. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if we go back there later when we're better able to deal with the magic that's making the ice.

I think the breath weapons' Snowy and I have did OK in dealing with the ice itself. This place is pretty out of the way, up above the snowline, etc. Who knows if we'll make it back up here?

Q&A:

1. Can you figure out what's causing the effect?  Yes, with some good rolls.
2. Can you get to it/get it?  Yes, with some ingenuity, though it's dangerous at this level.
3. Is it cool?  Yes.
4. Is it necessary? Not right now.
5. Will it still be here when you get back?  Given that no one else knows about this place, and the ice keeps pretty much everything out that isn't actively trying to get in (and has the resources to do it)... probably.  :)

Title: Re: OOC Discussion

Actually, it has to stay adjacent to the object's exterior. Still assuming that the whole ice cavern counts as a single block of ice, could it still pass along the ice's edge that borders with the cavern walls/floors?

Well, that's interesting. About how deep is the cavern overall, and about how far in is the knife? Are there any other exits within the frozen area, and is there any area of the cavern (other than the part we're in) that isn't solid ice?

What's Flash-Freeze? I don't have Frostburn. I know what Blue Ice does from the preview (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20040911a&page=5), though.

Edit: To confirm, is the ice itself blue ice, or is it just a coating of blue ice around the room's edges and regular ice in the otherwise open space?

Flash-Freeze (http://dndtools.eu/spells/frostburn--68/flash-freeze--1307/).

The cavern is about 100 feet deep, and the knife is about 70 feet in, in the center.  There's a lake which is presumably fed by the river, but the top portions of it are all frozen.

EDIT: And the knife is a kukri, if anyone's interested.

Legion can do it via Green Lady. Both directly (with the Identify spell) and indirectly (with that granted vestige power that IDs things with a Spellcraft check). And I should be able to boost said Spellcraft check a bit with my rituals, too.

Anything down in the lake/leading to where it's fed by the river?

OK... but I still think my idea for creating a frozen prison was a good one.  :D I'm definitely going to have to use that sometime.

It seems like it's always some kind of magical bars of force, with a dimensional lock, or a pocket dimension (iron flask), etc, holding back the BBEG/demon/elder evil/etc. But why not just freeze him? That seems a lot easier to pull off with lower level magic, and it's cooler... (Yeah, I went there.)

I've already done this at conventions. Scooby Doo and the Thing that Should Not Be. When there's a big enough attendance, we include guest stars (Like the original cartoon used to) which would be the Three Stooges, or the Marx Brothers, or... in the event of a massive turnout, the Addams Family or the Harlem Globetrotters.

Legion seems to be the one to read all of them in character. I just do it OOC.

By the way, what would the Decipher Script DC be for translating this language, and how would that change with the reference material we have already (one tablet translated, and a few more letters via Gurdin's books)? For reference, I have a +5 DS modifier, and I can pump it up to +9 with rituals since an attempt only takes 1 minute (I can sustain 15 rounds of rituals without recharging), or +11 if the modifier only needs to be increased at a limited point in the attempt, rather than over the entire duration.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: sirpercival on May 22, 2012, 08:55:46 AM
Well, let's give you the previous sources as +2 circumstance modifiers each, giving you a +6.  All this text is pretty simple, but the language itself is archaic, so base DC 25.

And I think since you only need to roll once that you can pop out the +11.  I mean, you can do Divine Insight to help DS, which only affects one roll and is discharged when you use it.  It's just that the roll takes 1 minute.  :)

It's more like that I can get the extra +2 modifier, but it (they, actually, since it's two +1s) would only last for 3 rounds and the skill check takes 1 minute. Ergo, my skill check modifier would not be at the increased level across the entirety of the attempt to use the skill, only at the beginning/end/whatever point of it. Not that it matters here, since I can make the DC taking 10 with the basic skill ritual's +4 and the various circumstance modifiers' +6.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Sneaky_Sable on May 22, 2012, 10:00:11 AM
You can always start the decipher, then just when the minute is almost up pop both the +1's in time for the skill check. :)

Since we're certainly leaving this cave to do whatever we decide to do (unless the decision is to become hermits), can I get the Detect Magic results on the rune in the entrance arch, please?

We should probably make preparations for whatever trip we decide to make. From what I understood, we only have supplies for travel on a local scale, not an international one. We should probably share the information we've found with someone we trust, so that if something bad happens to us it doesn't get lost completely. Sorrel would also like to at least say goodbye to his family before disappearing.

By the way, I don't suppose I've heard (or read) the name "Eidoloterra" anywhere before?

If I'm going to really think hard on it, or doing research on it when we're done here, it'll be a ritual-enhanced check for another +6 on top (included in the rolls). You be the judge, just take off 6 points if you don't think it's appropriate. About how far away is the aforementioned creature?

Knowledge checks to ID (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=4362.20;msg=88967). For future, should I just roll once and list off the modifiers, or should I continue using the roller once for each different modifier the roll could have?

So... I forget. Was it a full round action for Legion to bind a vestige? Or was that just for "swapping out" once per day? If it's a FRA, I might go ahead and bind one.

I think you could bind as a FRA 1/day, swapping out if you already have one bound.

In the future, roll once and list modifiers.  I'll pretend that you did that this time and just use the nat 20 you rolled first.

So what if I didn't already have one bound, and I bind as a FRA? Can I still swap to a different one 1xday, but take the normal time (1 minute, IIRC)? Or I'm stuck with the first one all day?

I wish I could access Cure Light Wounds via the Green Lady... that would let me function as the party band-aid, rather than just patch up myself (via Repair Light Damage).
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Garryl on July 09, 2012, 11:11:10 PM
Out of combat, I can still heal half of all damage anyone's taken (and turn the rest into nonlethal), so healing isn't as much a concern as it seems at first glance. In two more levels, I'll be able to heal everyone to full, too. I just it didn't take so much time to do it.

Leading the Attack grants allies +4 to attack rolls against the target I just hit. Now, it lasts for a round. Is that "Until the end of the current round" or "Until my next action"?

Isaac will take a 5 ft step diagonally to the square above Legion. He will draw his greatsword, and then ready an action to attack and psionic weapon the thing if it comes into range.
I'm pretty sure this thing has reach, Flay. So it's probably going to just smash you from where it stands, and not trigger your readied action. :P

Take levels in Cleric, define the deity you worship as having your exact ideals. Essentially, worship yourself.

As you perform low level cure spells (Be it through a wand of vigor or actual access to cure spells) others will have faith in your chosen divinity. Eventually such faith will flourish into an actual Divine Rank (Which is the only thing I've never seen any homebrew actually grant, so this may be a first).

Be sure to remember us all when you're a god.

I said I'd take suggestions for ideals and maneuvers, not classes. :P I could see if any of the ideals grant healing abilities, but I think if we can manage to wrangle up a wand of Lesser Vigor, we'll probably be OK. Although, if you all want to convert to Undead or take Tomb-Tainted Soul, I could cure you all with a touch.  :smirk

Radiant Dragon grants Healing Touch at 4.  That's a little ways off, though... I'm sure one of the forthcoming Ideals will have Devoted Spirit.

Seriously, since you're doing this I'm going to prioritize making Ideals.  So pick a couple, and then if some new ones come up soon that are more delectable, then you can swap at that point as necessary.

The ones I'm considering (and why) are listed in a spoiler in my character sheet, actually, along with a tentative list of maneuvers chosen and a stance. Recopied below for your convenience:

Quote
Primary Ideals: Pyroclastic (Breath of Fire discipline), Shadow (Hide, Autohypnosis, awesome discipline), Tartarian? (discipline is based on Intimidate, and looks good)
Other Ideals to consider (and probably take later): Song (Perform, Disguise), Battle (Bardic Music), Styx also looks interesting, if I decide to go towards grappling
Howling is quite good also. Shatter and Gust of Wind as Ideal abilities, and very strong options based on Intimidate as maneuvers.

Stance: Pale Horseman's Reckless Harvest: deal Str mod in damage to all threatened enemies on each successful attack. -2 penalty to AC and attacks while using this stance.
Maneuvers: Devlish Catharsis (AE 1, boost): Single target makes Will save or frightened.
Smoking Burn (BoF 1, boost): After using breath weapon, cloud of smoke left behind for 1 round + 1/4 ranks in spellcraft.
Clawing Back Time (SN 1, strike): Gain 1d4+IL temporary hit points after successful strike

And actually... comparing them again, I'm thinking of going with Howling as a primary over Tartarian. Shatter at will is pretty nice, plus there is a boost that lets you intimidate (demoralize) anyone you attack as a free action. Combined with the stance above, which is basically like a toned down Sweeping Strike, that should let me demoralize everyone within my reach as a free action every time I make a successful attack roll. :D

Edit: Character updated.

About a minute.  So Isaac gets the benefit of 10 rounds of Sorrel's particular brand of TLC.

Yeah. Don't miss!

Though, my suggestion would be to take the round and get the bonuses. If you take the attack and miss, it's a dead round anyway. Is it a one round thing only, though, or does it have a duration?

If it's just the one time thing, may not be as worth it then. Cuts your attack progression essentially in half.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion

It lasts for 3 rounds of actual use. I'd be using Quicken Ritual to cast Ritual Focus as a full-round action (instead of taking 1 minute), and then discharge it next turn before my attacks. Napkin math says the bonus breaks even after about 3 rounds of combat, so it's only a net gain if we go into round 4.

For later on at higher levels (assuming you take Wyrm Warrior to 5th for the second ideal power), you might want an ideal with Flame of the Forge for one ideal and combine it with binding Astaroth for the floating item creation feat and be a mini-Artificer. But that can't come before 10th level anyways, so it's a ways off.

Huh. I didn't actually look it up. I thought I'd memorized those progressions. :P

I think in the future I'll have him wielding the longspear and choose Fist of Stone for his 1st level spell known. That will give him great damage (3d6+9) for our level. Of course, he'll be a bit more vulnerable without the shield, and especially by choosing Fang instead of Shadow as his expressed ideal.

Hmm... 1d8+9 with Mirror Image vs 3d6+9... Is Mirror Image 6xday worth 6 more points of damage on average?

Well, that was interesting.

Once we're sure we're not getting interrupted again (double check the horse and the knight, too, and plop some more weapons into the ogre for good measure), I can set up my healing shop again. Isaac should be at 12 damage + 3 nonlethal, and Legion should be down 11 hp (13 damage - 2 temp hp), right? I can get everybody topped up in 22 rounds (isaac will have 9 nonlethal, Legion will have 5 nonlethal when we're done). Does anyone else need any healing?

Nice roll!

The ogre had a very dirty loincloth and a Large greatclub.  The knight, on the other hand, was wearing breastplate and had a masterwork greatsword, a light warhorse w/ military saddle and saddlebags.  In the saddlebags he had 114gp in cash, three full potion vials, 50 feet of nice silk rope, a small steel mirror, one meal's worth of rations, a whetstone, and a folded net.

Technically, a Medium Longsword is a 2H weapon for Nora'Luuu. To use a greatsword, he'd need to use both hands and his mouth as well. And he wouldn't swing it so much as throw it and follow behind.

Technically, a Medium Longsword is a 2H weapon for Nora'Luuu. To use a greatsword, he'd need to use both hands and his mouth as well. And he wouldn't swing it so much as throw it and follow behind.

Which would be hilarious. Not to mention Nora'luuu could use the medium breastplate as an armored tent :) So go for it!

Nora'Luuu may show interest in the mirror, because it's shiny and he's primitive. :)

A medium longsword is a one-handed weapon. As a small creature, Nora'luuu treats it as a two-handed weapon, and takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls when wielding it. See Inappropriately Sized Weapons (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm#weaponSize). As such, Nora'luuu should really be using a small greatsword instead of a medium longsword, which (in addition to not having a -2 penalty on attack rolls) would deal 1d10 damage instead of 1d8.

I actually liked the 3.0 system better than 3.5 in this respect. Back then, a medium longsword was exactly the same thing mechanically as a small greatsword, and could be wielded as one with no penalty.

Cool. Someone buy this for Nora'Luuu when we get back to civilization, cause Nora'Luuu took his father's sword, and his father was so old he had a THAC0.

We killed the baddie, and looted the bodies. What more else is there to do? :P I guess if someone is noble of heart and mind, they might bury the knight and/or find out who he is so we can notify his family, find out where he's from, or something like that. Legion is a bit... out of touch.... when it comes to nuances of good social etiquette, so I'll let someone else do that stuff. :D

Yeah, Sorrel is lord Fontaine's son. I need to add my backstory to my character sheet before it gets lost to the PM box.

Should I roll a Knowledge check or something to identify the knight's crest? Nobility and Royalty, I guess?

I'll take 10 for a 15, if that's alright.

Found the backstory (thanks again, Sirp), and added it to my character sheet. I'm pretty sure I would have told everyone when we first met and/or during travel time, and if I somehow haven't it's a safe bet that I'll talk about the pertinent details when we do introductions to Nora'luuu.

Sure, since downtime in Silverhaven is happening as soon as I get around to updating, let's add dpt & cnc to the fold.  Lol.

Use those chargen rules, but start at level 2.

It's a little weird in the setting... but my policy is to make it work so you can play what you want.  So see if you can come up with a cool background, and we'll tweak until it fits. :)

Diploartech, CNC, welcome to the club. Refreshments are in the fridge. Pull up a chair and make yourselves comfortable.

You don't hear me complaining (possibly because sound doesn't conduct across internet forums). I enjoy your homebrew too much.

By the way, weren't there some alternate char gen rules (I think I used them) for taking some specific array instead of rolling for stats? 18/16/16/14/12/10, I believe, although I don't remember the details and I don't see it in the chargen post.

Hi guys, Thanks for inviting me to the party, I'm about half way done with my char gen, and just had a question or three for SirP at the moment:

Whats the rule for HP generation? Max, mean, minimum etc?

Any problems with a Human Factotatum (building to Chameleon) arcane skill monkey with a penchant for running Up the Walls? I'll probably take Battle Jump at level 6 to keep my damage on pace but I don't intend to play ubercharging games.

Skill Tricks ok?

Can I handle animal a dog?

Anybody know any repeatable way to get Spider Climb? (no dips)

I'm thinking of characteriz... I mean I think my character will have a background in being a do-it-all, make all the bigger kids mad and chase him sorta thing where he would always end up jumping on roofs or trees... So lots of running up things and jumping and "climbing"

Do I sound too much like Endarire yet?

Anybody know any repeatable way to get Spider Climb? (no dips)

1. Sovereign Glue on your gloves and shoes. Buy a million gloves and shoes.

2. As above, except you glue spiders to your hands and feet. May grant circumstance bonus to Intimidate checks vs. people who suffer from Arachnophobia. May grand circumstance bonus to Diplomacy to deal with Drow.

3. Wand of Spider Climb?

4. As 2, except with Masterwork Bees.

5. Buy two Immovable Rods and keep them in your shoes. Train your toes to press the trigger stud repeatedly. Enjoy walking on air.

6. As above, except with bedtime slippers. Pretend to sleepwalk on mid-air. Enjoy founding your new religion.

7. As above, except while you're awake. Also enjoy your new religion.

8. Hire thirty illusionists to disguise themselves as you and masquerade as you all over town. Optional: Hire a bard to play Yakkety Sax while this occurs.

Ok so maybe just the wand....

The only real problem there is if you plan on bashing people's faces in with the gauntlet then you risk damaging the wand. Besides, if your wand fist is going to be smashing into people, you should save up money for a wand of Levitation, then just uppercut people into the sun.

Hey dpt, just letting you know that I'm willing to include these (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=3214.0), along with the houserule that you get 1 inspiration point for each [Inspiration] feat you have (which is necessary for the rewritten FoI).

On a related topic, I've put up (mostly playable) a character sheet that is not quite finished. I was wondering if I could give you big puppy dog eyes  :bigeyes and get the Chameleon requirement of Able Learner waived. Its currently on there taking up a feat. So let me know what you think.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: sirpercival on September 27, 2012, 01:21:50 PM
Hmm... see if you can come up with any suitable replacements.  Thematically appropriate but not as useless for a Factotum.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Concerned Ninja Citizen on September 27, 2012, 08:07:20 PM
Jack of All Trades (http://dndtools.eu/feats/complete-adventurer--54/jack-of-all-trades--1695/) is a possibility. It would at least obviate the need to put a rank in each Knowledge and things like that.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: dipolartech on September 27, 2012, 10:11:30 PM
Unfortunately Jack of All Trades doesn't manage to satisfy the Cunning Knowledge class feature of Factotum:

Quote
When making a check involving a skill in which you have at least 1 rank, you can spend 1 inspiration point to gain a bonus on the check equal to your factotum level

So it would be spending a feat to satisfy the same requirement as using 2 levels worth of skill points to have 1 in all of them. Thematically appropriate but not any more useful than Able Learner to a Factotum. i'll cruise around the books and keep a look out.

Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Concerned Ninja Citizen on September 27, 2012, 10:46:05 PM
Ack, didn't realize Cunning Inspiration had that proviso. Maybe homebrew something relevant?

What about a feat version of the ACF Bardic Knack?

Cunning Knack
You are extremely versatile. You know how to do absolutely anything, at least a little.

Prerequisites: Int 13, Must be Taken at level 1, Must be played by Dipolartech in Augury Campaign run by sirpercival.

Benefit:When making any skill check, you can use 1/2
your character level (rounded up) in place of the number of ranks
you have in the skill (even if that number is 0).

Special: This feat may be taken in place of Able Learner to qualify for the Chameleon Prestige Class.

Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Sneaky_Sable on September 28, 2012, 04:43:00 PM
I think Able Learner is there for a reason. Two, at least.

One: It's awesome
Two: To qualify for a silly class like Chameleon, the prerequisite should be nasty.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Concerned Ninja Citizen on September 28, 2012, 04:56:54 PM
Except Able Learner is only nasty for Factotums. For anyone else it's a strong and useful feat.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: sirpercival on September 28, 2012, 05:07:14 PM
Yeah, factotums have every skill as a class skill.  It literally does nothing for him.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Garryl on September 28, 2012, 09:27:57 PM
As a single-classed Factotum, yes, Able Learner does nothing. As a multiclassed Factotum (say, going into Chameleon) it does do something. When you're in another class, you keep the rank maximum of other classes' class skills, but spending skill points on skills that aren't class skills for your current class still costs double (as normal for cross-class skills). Able Learner keeps the cost at 1 per rank, like class skills.

If you don't come up with or can't decide on a viable alternative, just take a different feat initially, then retrain it at level 5 before you enter Chameleon. You could even use your level 6 feat to pick up whatever it was you originally took, I suppose.

I don't remember the exact house rules we're using here, but the ones in use for High Arcana include the effects of Able Learner as a base rule for everyone, so the feat would literally do nothing there.

We seem to be frozen mid dialogue. I asked Legion/Phaedrus how the group came to form and then the drunk guy showed up. We're kinda waiting on reactions to these things from the rest of the party.

Nora'Luuu adds something of a menacing growl to Legion's menacing tone, but it's hard to take something so small and cute as menacing. (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=4362.msg125761#msg125761)

Maybe it had to do with the fact that what was a chicken leg to most was a turkey leg to him. Or maybe it was the hiccup that hit directly in the midst of the growl...
In either respect, Nora'Luuu quickly turns his attention back to the food before him, silently wishing to father that the last ten seconds could be wiped from the record.

Still here, just hanging out invisibly... I certainly can wait a little while longer to make my entrance yes surely... not to rush but I'm pretty sure you guys have to deal with the drunk before Sheant can make his appearance... that or sirP could just have me rush in and stab him or something....

First thing, I forgot to add my piddly +1 ability modifier to the roll but I think it will be ok.... maybe.

Secondly, whats preferred here rolling in thread if its something simple, making a url link every time to the dice roll thread? Just spoilering the number from the dice roll thread?

Thirdly I really need to take this hand written character sheet and stick it on mythweavers.....

Fourthly I seem to have gone off the deep end, I put down a +2 misc bonus to Bluff but I think i meant that to be a situational to disguise... now I'm all confused. Am I right in saying that there shouldn't be any skill synergies to add to Bluff at level 2?

Skill synergies only require 5 ranks. So you could have a synergy.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: sirpercival on November 17, 2012, 12:47:20 AM
No, nothing gives synergy to bluff (only the other way around).  Just include links to the roll posts -- that "this post has been edited!" crap is why the rolling thread exists in the first place.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Garryl on November 19, 2012, 12:51:07 AM
Standard policy for rolling is to roll in the rolling thread (or on another site like Invisible Castle, I think, is okay), then link to it in the thread you're posting in. Using the forum roller in the thread you're doing stuff in is annoying because you can't edit your post without the warning popping up. Similarly, quoting the post with the roll in it makes it into a warning. Plus, main posts like that tend to get edited, and while I'm sure everyone here is trustworthy and nobody is even thinking of cheating, it's better not to have the worry/temptation, right?

Could the Bluff bonus be from a masterwork tool?

I'm pretty sure that course of action leads inevitably to skynet and world domination.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind so much having sirpercival as our robot overlord. Unless it means he's too busy ruling the world to homebrew or run games. Then we'd have to mount a rebellion.

How do you know you're not just an advanced robot who thinks he's the original and are actually (but not to your knowledge) breaking into Cyberdene to rescue your creator (who is of course held captive by Skynet, which you will likely cripple or destroy in the process), the revelation of which will blow your mind and make you question your very existence before ultimately concluding that you are more than just a machine, a distinct entity in and of yourself deserving of a life of your own, free from the whims of the one who thinks he is your better simply because he made you? Because that would be weird.

Nothing like a good bar brawl.  :D

Edit: OK, so Legion lost his slam attack by becoming a dragonborn. So his unarmed strike is nonlethal.

He is bound to the Fang Dragon ideal, which increases his damage dice one step. So it should do d4 instead of d3. He can also use the "Blade" feature to expend a maneuver and add 1d6 damage to his attacks.

My question is: after these modifications, is his unarmed strike still nonlethal? I guess it is, but just checking.

Alvin is going to release the Weapon of Aether that's been hiding behind his back for the last minute or so and target it at "the man". Does he need to take a move action to do so?

Just a reminder to myself, if this continues to a full-fledged battle (as opposed to an unarmed brawl or whatever), Sorrel will shoot blunt arrows, not the regular pointy kind (in case any shots go awry, not that D&D rules worry about that or anything). Bludgeoning nonlethal damage with a x2 crit multiplier instead of piercing and x3 according to RotW.
Edit: Also -20' range increment with longbows. Not that that's likely to matter.

Yes he would. lol.

Would it matter? Is anyone here not still flat-footed (or have Combat Reflexes)?
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Concerned Ninja Citizen on December 04, 2012, 05:39:29 PM
The thug might have Combat Reflexes. It's not the worst feat for a bouncer/enforcer type, though he doesn't strike me as terribly fleet of foot so he may not have the requisite dexterity.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Garryl on December 04, 2012, 07:03:59 PM
There is no Dex requirement for CR. Even if you have a Dex of 1, it still lets you take your one normal AoO per round while flat-footed.
Title: Re: OOC Discussion

Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: Garryl on December 04, 2012, 07:20:17 PM
I know what you mean. I only noticed otherwise a few months ago. I mean, if there's ever going to be a feat with a Dex requirement (other than Weapon Finesse, of course), you'd think it would be the one all about using your Dex score to be fast on the counter-punch, right? Just like how Power Attack and Combat Expertise are useless with a BAB of +0 and thus require BAB +1 to take... nope!

That may depend on whether Phaedrus got a surprise round. The guy was probably ready for him but he definitely allowed Legion to make the first move. In that case, we may be coming up on the first actual round and going down the initiative order. Of course, most of us are delaying or readying.

Close, that's Princess Cadence, or rather, Queen Chrysalis in the form of Princess Cadence. This is right before she traps Twilight in a ring of flame and banishes her to the crystal caverns beneath Canterlot.

And for people who do not watch the show... none of that is an exaggeration.

(Attacking from higher ground )table). Distance not taken into account so apply any mod necessary, but as she was heading towards the door I assume she's within 30 ft of them)

Doesn't high ground advantage only apply to melee attacks unless you have a feat?

I don't think so, its part and parcel to the killer kobolds thing, ambush from high ground with bows.

On higher ground: +1 for melee, +0 for ranged.

Higher ground is still a sound tactical advantage for ranged attackers, but mostly because closing on an opponent above you takes longer for the same distance (lower range increment penalties for the same number of rounds that the enemy needs to close). It's more of a defensive thing than an offensive thing in that regard.

Its a legacy issue, though why they didn't keep "archery works better from higher ground" from the original wargame I don't know. The issue is conservation of detail (and dm sanity) pushed the first versions of the game into dungeons and "smaller" spaces where the idea of archery doesn't even make much sense and so all of the original thought was put into swinging swords at things (imo). So you have all these details about melee and then basically... you need PBS to do anything as a "range" character.

So, I think the only person left to go is Legion, and then we should be okay.

Also, I have to ask, is Legion at all inspired by Legion? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CRPScZ-FOI) I am just now getting around to playing these games.

No. I haven't played a single video game in... years. I just thought it was an interesting name, since he used to be a "soldier" in a Legion, and he is also basically a composite being made up of the memories of a lot of other beings (ancient, dead beings).

It's also... a pretty common trope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legion_in_popular_culture) (been around for a couple thousand years at least :D). I think I specifically remembered hearing it being used first from Steven King's Randall Flagg (either in "The Stand" or the "Dark Tower" series. It is used to refer to him in both).

So... it's been a while and I don't think there is a map, so I'm not sure if I can do this without hitting allies or innocent bystanders, but I think I'd like to breathe fire on the two guys with crossbows.  :D (I'm going to add the "Smoking Burn" boost to it, to give us a smoke screen). The main thing I want is the "wall of smoke" effect. So even if I have to move and reposition him, and only hit maybe one of the "bad guys", I'll do that if I can get the smoke screen to a better position.

Tidus, his father and all of the Aeon's are pretty much the solidified dreamings of a long "dead" civilization in Final Fantasy 10. In fact the entire civilization was stuck in some sort of nightmarish loop that interacted with the real world that kept re-incarnating their version of the Tarrasque and sundering what little civilization that had grown after their fall. So they sorta of pushed Tidus into existing in the real world to fix it.

And honestly in hind-sight big picture that really does sound like a truly epic plotline.... though you don't really get to see it until the very end or even into the sequel.

Signing in back from a hell of a long hiatus. At some point I lost interest but as so much was going on IRL at the time I unintentionally forgot to alert you guys (especially SirPercival) I'd be backing off D&D and these boards, and it took me longer than expected to be interested again. I want to say I'm quite sorry for going AWOL like that...

On the same note, I'd be really happy to get to play as Snowy here again, although I might need a recap of some sorts.. :blush

It seems you left when the party was exploring the underground complex.

After doing that, they headed back to Silverhaven, encountering an ogre on the way.  Then they started eating & planning in the Wolf's Head Tavern before some newcomers showed up.  The first one (Alvin, played by CNC) is a friend of Sorrel's, and the second (Kheldar, played by dpt) was a "drunk" who said that you guys were being followed.  A couple enemies showed up, and that's about it.  Read the last couple pages of the IC thread and you should be ok.

Other than having to kill the ogre twice, that about covers it... (it came back, like the dead guy Legion impersonated for a while, but immediately instead of a few days later).

And Sorrel translated all the stuff in the cave. I don't remember if you were here for that. Basically more prophesy stuff, IIRC.

Where are we at now? I understand there's a smoke cloud of some sort and a couple of thugs running away? One of them was knocked out, right?

Here's the situation as I understand it:
We're in a bar. Those of us that are "us" (including Kheldar) are sort of clumped together near the bar with two thugs.
One of the thugs is unconscious. The other is injured (knife from Kara).
Two thugs with crossbows have just entered through a door. They're mildly injured from Wuffles's breath weapon, and are currently standing in the middle of a smoke cloud of some sort. I assume that the smoke is the standard Obscuring Mist/Fog Cloud type, right?
Various other patrons that we don't seem to be caring about are taking cover/running in panic/doing the macarena.

Which door did the crossbowmen come in from? Is there another exit? Do I recognize anything distinctive about the crossbowmen?
Title: Re: OOC Discussion
Post by: phaedrusxy on February 11, 2013, 11:05:16 AM
It was stated that there is a back door at some point (the first thug wanted us to follow him out that way, IIRC). The smoke occupies the same line as the breath weapon that made it, and I think works like Obscuring Mist/etc. Here is the description:

Quote
an opaque curtain of smoke that fills the same area as the breath weapon's area. It doesn't deal damage or hinders movement, but it fully blocks line of sight. This curtain lasts for 1 round, plus another round for every 4 ranks you have in spellcraft. You may choose to lower the maximum duration when you use this strike.

Legion's breath weapon is only a 10' long line. So it's not really a big cloud. I just wanted to get the two crossbow thugs in it for sure. It will also only last one round, as he has no ranks in spellcraft.

I'm not sure if this is helping or hurting us more at this point, though...  :bigeyes

There are 3 "thugs":
~ Stuve, the original brute who had collared Kheldar.  He's now unconscious on the ground next to Kheldar.
~ "Thug2 and Thug3", one of whom is apparently named Henckle.  They have been surrounded by smoke, and one took a knife to the shoulder.

Do I have a clear shot at the crossbow thug Kara already injured?

Should I pop some/all of my rituals now, or save them in case there are a bunch more thugs waiting outside? They only last 3 rounds. My currently available rituals are Focus (+2 attack and damage with ranged attacks), Protection (DR 2/- and resist all 2), and Intuition (immediate action for +1 to an d20 roll, 1/round), and I can share any 2 of them with everybody around me.

Title: Re: OOC Discussion

No worries.

Discharge Good Hope -> Protection. Subjects get DR 2/- and resist acid, cold, electricity, fire, and sonic 2 for the next 3 rounds. Circle of Good Hope means all allies within 10 feet are affected, which should be everyone, I think. I'll take a 5' step if needed to get as many as possible.

Rapid shot 2 attacks at thuggy. Blunt arrows, as specified before (even though between Precise Shot and D&D archery rules, missed shots can't even think about hitting bystanders, it's the principle of the matter; plus, interrogatable prisoners, maybe). Does Point Blank Shot apply? That is, is the thug within 30 feet? If the first shot takes him down, I'll direct the second shot at the second crossbow thug, although with 1d8(+1) damage and only a +2(+3) attack bonus, it's unlikely to happen.

Sorrel will tie up the thugs, and/or aid Alvin's attempts to do so, unless someone more competent comes along to take the lead. I somehow have it in my head that you can't take 10 on Aid Another checks, and since you don't actually make the Use Rope check to bind someone (at a +10 bonus, which makes perfect sense when you expect people to take 20 on the Escape Artist to get out) until they actually try to escape, I'm just not going to roll anything for now.

We were returning from Plot Cave with the Second MacGuffin when we ran across a scene. Ogre had killed knight (Sir Gef) and was eating Horseburger. Promptly killed Ogre. Twice. Cremated everything but the Knight because Things Won't Stay Dead(TM). Carried Knight to town, 'cause proper burial. Had planned on returning knight body to family but fast-tracked to the inn and since you don't drag corpses to Inns I assume someone (I volunteer Isaac) returned to the knight corpse to his family off-camera (unless we left him on the coat-rack, then we can do this now).

At Inn: We have two slabs that have a penchant for turning corpses into things that want to eat us and a mappy thingy that tells the general location of the others. We're collecting them so we can sell them on SeaBay for loads of coin. I think we were planning on deciding which to go for next but the following happened:

Met Alvin, friend of Sorrel. Met Drunk, friend of Ale. Ate food, friend of stomach. Met thieves...they really don't have friends. Killed thieves, because they ruined the mood. Looting thieves like good little adventurers.

Map: http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=339.msg1538#msg1538

We're the top one and the Dead Scholar Guy with First MacGuffin came from the one to the east that has a line connected to ours...I forget the name. The rest are options. We could follow the lines or just go for the closest., if we still want to pursue MacGuffins.

At least, that's my sense of things.

Shouldn't Sorrel be the one to recognize the Athame? He's the Ritualist (of course if you wanted to toss in an aether gem or six for Alvin to recognize, that would be nice too.)
... derp.

Sorry for not posting in the last month or so.

Would it be correct to construe from the alternate title ("Lord Gef" vs. "Sir Gef"), that the signet ring belongs to someone higher in the family hierarchy than the corpse we brought back to town with us? Or have I just been reading too many Vorkosigan books lately?

I guess it would have been more accurate to say that it was the Gef family crest.

Attention All:

I will be attending Dexcon (The super awesome convention of gaming and such what) from Wednesday July 3 to Sunday July 7. I may or may not have access to the Interwebs during this time. Please consider this a leave of absence for the above dates. Thanking you.
