Encounter Thread 7: Into the... Fire?
« on: October 08, 2012, 09:46:40 AM »
Please go ahead and post Spot and Initiative rolls, and any other rolls you'd like to make. Knowledge checks I'm sure will be desirable at some point. Go ahead and give me Dungeoneering and Planes, for those who want to make them. I'll tell you why later.

And for those of you inside the HARDIS, I assume you're all somewhere in area 4 (the entry hall) since you're watching your friends exit through the portal with great anticipation. Let me know if that's not the case, and if you can let me know where you'd like your character(s) to be exactly.

The portal that Marlowe and Raoul are stepping out of is in yellow along the North wall of room 4.

Marlowe and Raoul step out into the bright, sunlit day and abruptly stop, seemingly suspended in mid-air. Then, apparently hovering, they silently float back into the HARDIS. It's not until you see the large pieces split off from it and start to fly around the room that you make out the outline an enormous transparent blob that they are stuck in.

The two cubes which split off from the larger one fly around the edges of the room, slapping everyone they pass with a big, wet, gooey pseudopod, which is dripping with acid and also a paralytic poison. They slap into each other with a smacking sound when their paths converge at the back of the room (squares E8/F8).

So it looks like these slams hit, barring anything I overlooked (I just compared attack rolls to flat-footed ACs):
agita: 3 bludgeoning, 13 acid
oggug: 5 bludgeoning, 13 acid
uvorix: 4 blud., 12 acid
hannavrah: 7 blud., 12 acid

Updated the initiative order and status of everyone, and also the map with the positions for the cubes (in green), Marlowe, and Raoul. Surin in in the same square as Marlowe (as he's in his pocket). The cubes are in combat and inside the HARDIS, so they're visible to all normal and extraordinary senses.

RJ is up, and she's not paralyzed or inhibited in any way. It looks like two of Xuuvosic's minions also tied her for initiative, so I listed those three in order of bonuses.

As the harpy, Hannavrah, shakes off the paralytic effects of the ooze, she examines her armaments (spiked gauntlets and a poison ring), and considers how likely the current enemies are to be impressed by a serenade. Then she promptly performs a retrograde maneuver to the lesser hall, in order to confront any additional assailants  that may emerge from the kitchen or bedrooms.

Siphsis fires off a couple of vicious point blank shots at Raoul, but shrugs when the large Gelatinous Cube gets in the way.

Ris-Janna starts back as the vitriolic pseudopods lash through the room. It's been a while since she was actually caught by surprise. Having been skulking around near the entrance, she wastes no time in stepping forward and ripping into the slime with her blades. Her knives fly faster than the eye can see, shearing off  While it doesn't have any vital organs, cutting it to little wobbly pieces should work just fine.

And maybe then, she can somehow get Raoul to take an acid jell-o shot.

Ris-Janna's first swing carves a jiggling gash into the blob in front of her, but her other swings go wide, perhaps subconsciously. For as she strikes the fleshy ooze, she herself feels a piercing pain as if her  dagger had struck her instead.

Likewise everyone feels the sting of an arrow when the Harpy's first shot strikes true.

Cade whips the large, magic guisarme from the strap on his back, and assumes a fighting stance. Energy seems to radiate off of the monk, and flows through the weapon. He holds off from attacking the main cube, however, to try and cut down one of the nearby smaller ones.

The cubes seem to shrug off the cloaker's moans, but Cade's slashing weapon cuts huge gashes into the quivering form of one. It still seems to be animate, though.

Shlurshech, badly wounded, runs for the pit and continues down a level of scaffolding. Once there, the wormlike aberration triggers its healing ring. But the ring's entire reserve barely begins to palliate the damage (8).

Erlking drops into Thicket of Blades stance, then executes a Bonecrusher (ToB p.81) maneuver upon the wounded small cube. If successful, he lets go of the Fleshgrinding spiked chain and grabs a new one. (to hit 37, damage 28 + 6 fire)

Xuuvosic also swings his spiked chain up to speed, in crazy arcs that cover most of the room. But rather than striking, the demonic creature concentrates on warping the flow of time. (White Raven Tactics on Ris-Janna, DC 24 Time Hop on the big cube,  Time Hop again if unsuccessful, but if the 1st one works then Slow on the small cubes instead.

Beneath the blow from the barghest, the wounded cube splatters into chunks, which rapidly melt into a foul-smelling pool of liquid which begins to bubble and eat away at the floor.

The large cube disappears without a trace. (you lucky bastards :P )

The remaining cube's quivering slows down surreally as the paradox demon's chain ends its spin.

Moving through the eddies of time as if shot from a sling, Ris-Janna launches herself at the remaining cube, pouncing into the middle of the room and then lunging forward to slice and dice the cube.
